Chapter 80: [Bonus Chapter for ohecoupons] Gifting a Mecha
Hoolin was the grandson of the First Commander, and Tyrone’s family also had ties to the military. Thus they received some preferential treatment here, and they had been used to it, unlike Yuri.
"Does Yuri also pilot a mecha?" Tyrone curiously asked. He knew Yuri was skilled in driving a lev, but piloting a lev and a mecha were two different things.
Tuss hummed ambiguously, changing the subject, "Are you guys choosing mechas controlled by the mind or manually operated?"
"Definitely a combination of both," Hoolin replied, "If one fails, we still have the other as backup. It’s safer that way."
"I’m also choosing a combination of mind and manual control. What I’m more curious about now is what kind of weapons they will equip us with, and how advanced they’ll be," Tyrone said, his eyes gleaming with anticipation.
"Newbie mecha artillery is only at level five power. We should be on par with the new recruits. After all, the higher the level, the more powerful it is. If we misjudge or lose control, we won’t just harm the insectoids, but our comrades and ourselves too," Hoolin explained.
Tyrone nodded in agreement, "Level five is enough."
The hotel was a fair distance from the military base, so Yuri and the rest planned to take the public lev.
As she checked her balance when paying for the ride, Yuri discovered a sudden increase in her account. Half an hour ago, she had received a payment of ten million astracredits for the sale of a level four insectoid carcass.
Her eyes widened in surprise, "So many astracredits!"
"Twenty million in total. I split half with the others, and kept the rest," Tuss said, looking at her indulgently. "It’s all yours now. Buy whatever you want."
Hoolin and Tyrone shared a look before moving to sit further away from Yuri and Tuss, refusing to be subjected to their sweet moments.
"I lost out," Yuri thought of the level five insectoid queen from Planet 132. If a level four could sell for twenty million, a level five would surely bring more.
Tuss seemed to understand what she was thinking. He frowned and said, "Should I ask Officer Lyao for more money?" No one else knew who had killed the level five insectoid queen, but Officer Lyao did.
"Forget it," Yuri shook her head, "Officer Lyao wouldn’t have a reason to give us more money. Plus, we’re about to get two mechas from the military for free, so it balances out."
"Next time, I’ll get you a level six insectoid," Tuss declared earnestly.
"Okay, I’ll be waiting," Yuri didn’t decline. Alphas in heat tended to be more aggressive, bringing the best of everything to their betas. If their betas rejected these gifts, they’d be deeply hurt.
"Oh, your Enova is at level four," Yuri whispered in surprise.
"I can’t be too far behind you," Tuss grinned proudly.
"No, you’re not behind at all. You’re the only SSS-tier among the young generation of the Alliance," Yuri generously praised her alpha. Seeing his smug expression, she found it amusing.
This version of Tuss was quite unlike his usual calm and steady self.
"Are you Tuss and Yuri?" A voice suddenly cut in.
Yuri looked up and saw several young girls dressed in school uniforms. They were looking at her and Tuss with a mixture of excitement and expectation, their youthful faces flushed with nervous anticipation.
"We are," Yuri answered with a gentle smile.
Her voice seemed to exude a calming effect, and the girls seemed less afraid. They carefully asked, "Could you give us your autographs?"
Yuri was momentarily taken aback when handed a pink notebook. She signed her name fluidly and then handed the notebook to Tuss, "You sign one too."
Tuss did not refuse and signed his name next to hers.
They autographed a dozen more notebooks, and when it seemed like the girls were still going to continue, Yuri couldn’t help but ask, "Isn’t that enough?"
"Not at all," one of the girls said mischievously. "Our classmates found out we ran into you and begged us to get your autographs for them too. And quite conveniently, we were out shopping for classroom supplies today, including notebooks." The implication being that they were not short of notebooks.
Resigned, Yuri signed dozens more notebooks until they finally arrived at the military base and got off the bus, which finally gave her some relief.
"You two are celebrities now," Tyrone said, opening his opticomputer to show Yuri and Tuss their popularity rankings. Yuri was first, and Tuss was second, with Yuri’s votes far surpassing anyone else’s.
"Yuri’s popularity is even higher than Tuss’s," Hoolin exclaimed in surprise.
"Well, haven’t you noticed what she’s done?" A man waiting in front of the military base stepped forward, fondly ruffling Hoolin’s hair.
"What did she do?" Hoolin asked curiously.
Tuss and Tyrone also looked puzzled. Tuss even gave Yuri’s hand a squeeze, saying in a dissatisfied tone, "Did you do something dangerous again?"
Yuri touched her nose, a guilty look on her face, "Not that dangerous."
Tuss was not convinced, but he knew this wasn’t the time to ask. He had to let the matter slide for now.
The man who greeted them was a level-six sergeant, Hoolin’s distant cousin.
The guy handed two dimensional buttons to Tuss and Yuri. One was silver and the other black; silver for Yuri, black for Tuss.
"These are from Officer Lyao, specifically for you two," the guy said. He had no idea what they contained, but even the dimensional buttons themselves seemed impressive.
Tuss and Yuri accepted the buttons and without asking any questions, wore them on their wrists. Hoolin was surprised, "They don’t have to choose?"
His cousin nodded in affirmation.
"In that case, we won’t be joining you inside," Yuri said.
"Won’t you help us with some advice?" Tyrone asked.
"We have other things to take care of. Besides, for advice, you have professionals here," Yuri responded.
"Alright, then. We’ll see you back at the hotel," Tyrone said, sounding a little disappointed.
After Yuri led Tuss out of the military base, he couldn’t help but ask, "What are we going to do?"
"Daleks got hurt and is now in the hospital. We need to go check on him." Even though Ender had sent a message saying Daleks was alright, as good friends, they still felt the need to visit.
Only then did Tuss learn about Daleks’ injury. "Is it serious?" he asked.
Yuri nodded and replied, "He was pierced in the abdomen by an insectoid’s long tail."
Tuss frowned and sent a message to Ender immediately.
Ender quickly replied: He’s in a deep sleep now, the doctors say he can leave the hospital tomorrow. The hospital is packed right now, they’re limiting the number of people in each room, so you won’t be able to get in even if you come. Just come to pick us up tomorrow.
"In that case, we’ll go pick them up tomorrow," Tuss said.
Yuri nodded in agreement. At this point, her opticomputer flashed; it was a message from Officer Lyao. After reading it, her face suddenly changed.
Tuss, noticing this, asked anxiously, "What’s wrong?"
"Officer Lyao said that a hole has been breached in the Alliance’s defensive line, and a number of insectoids have infiltrated the Fritillaria Galaxy," Yuri said. "No wonder there were sudden appearances of insectoids at the spaceport today."
