Chapter 304: Chapter 119: Redemption Across Time! Are You Afraid of God? No, I’m Afraid of You. _5
Another great war had broken out.
After the two strenuously broke free from the pursuit.
Elizabeth’s once simple worldview was once again shaken.
She, who had firmly believed the world was black and white, discovered it was far more complex than she had imagined.
Those around her might betray her at any moment.
Just now, allies who had stood together might even stab her in the back the next moment.
But fortunately,
the pursuit only lasted for a while before it ceased.
The reason was that Daisy and Fink had come into conflict in this world.
Due to the increasing influence of the rebels, countless workers joined the rebellion, causing severe labor shortages in the industrial areas.
In the midst of the chaos, Booker and Elizabeth sneaked into Daisy’s lair, hoping to steal back their airship.
But they accidentally stumbled upon Daisy executing Fink.
She blew Fink’s head open with a gun right in front of his young child.
And continued preparing to kill his child.
At heart, Elizabeth was still good-natured and couldn’t bear to see a toddler, only three or four years old, being killed.
So she asked the player to cover for her by distracting Daisy, while she sneakily entered from the back door on the other side.
At the critical moment, she grabbed the scissors from the table and plunged them straight into Daisy’s heart,
ending her life.
Blood splattered all over Elizabeth.
This innocent girl, covered in blood, looked at Daisy’s fallen body, her pupils trembling deeply as she stared blankly at her bloodied self.
Having been locked up in the tower for 18 years, to have killed somebody just a few hours after coming out, the impact on her psyche was unimaginable.
Of course, there was no time for her to adjust to it now.
The death of the rebel leader only fueled the rebels’ anger.
Before they could tear the two apart,
Booker pulled her onto the airship.
Elizabeth, however, locked herself in the cabin.
No matter how Booker knocked, she made no sound.
Out of necessity, Booker took control of the airship and took off.
When Elizabeth came out again after a while, she had cut off her ponytail, leaving only a short bob draping over her shoulders.
Gone was her innocence, replaced by a more sophisticated appearance.
She also changed into her deceased mother’s clothing, a tailored suit and an elegant evening gown.
Just as it was presented in the demo.
She walked over to Booker and quietly glanced at the navigational instruments still pointing towards New York, a tinge of desolation in her eyes.
Even with the ability to traverse time and space, the outcome seemed inevitable.
She realized that no matter how hard she struggled, she apparently couldn’t change anything.
Even her small wish to go to Paris seemed unattainable.
She had even killed someone in the effort to change the situation, but still couldn’t turn things around.
"Booker, how do you wash away the things you’ve done?" she asked, looking at the fluffy clouds in the blue sky.
After a long silence, Booker replied softly,
"No, you can only learn to live with it."
Just as the two were preparing to leave on the airship,
a shrill cry pierced the sky.
As the ultimate weapon of Columbia, the Nightingale’s existence was undoubtedly the trump card blocking their escape from Sky City.
If it wasn’t dealt with, the presence of the Nightingale would prevent their escape, no matter how many times they switched parallel universes.
What’s more, no one could guarantee that the next world would provide better opportunities than the current one.
After all, once they left the current universe, it would blend into the billions of countless parallel universes, never to return to the past.
The fierce attack of the Nightingale sent the airship plummeting straight towards the ground.
And just then, they encountered that same mysterious man and woman once again.
From them, Booker and Elizabeth learned the method to control the Nightingale.
A harmonica, hidden in Comstock’s mansion.
If played with the correct notes, it could turn foe into ally, assisting them in their escape.
With a clear objective now,
the pair changed the airship’s course and headed towards the castle district where Comstock resided.
As they proceeded, the enemy they faced this time was the rebellion.
The rebels’ influence had already penetrated the interior of the Prophet’s Mansion.
In this most prosperous area of Sky City, what these rebels were doing was no different from the rich they had replaced.
They tortured the wealthy by the most brutal methods, venting their dissatisfaction with the upper class without restraint.
They even took joy in slaughtering entire families, young and old alike, and posting their scalped heads on the front door.
This wanton destruction plunged Elizabeth deep into doubt.
"Can a government built upon killing and revenge truly provide a happy life for the lower classes?"
"Once the rich are wiped out and the war is over, when classes solidify over many years, won’t the tragedy simply repeat itself?"
None of the books she had ever read contained the answers.
And her imagined world was certainly not like this.
As a soldier who only knew how to fight, Booker couldn’t provide her with answers either.
But no matter what, the most important task at the moment was to find the harmonica to control the Nightingale and get its assistance for their escape.
And at this point, they finally arrived at the scene depicted in the demo.
Upon arriving at Comstock’s mansion, the Nightingale once again disrupted their plans,
and almost succeeded in killing Booker.
But at Elizabeth’s desperate plea, it spared Booker, taking Elizabeth away instead.
Perhaps it was the bond that had developed between them after many battles.
