Chapter 290: Chapter 116: Hallelujah!_2
Before their eyes lay a torrential downpour of inclement weather.
Amidst the heavy rain, two middle-aged individuals clad in yellow raincoats were paddling a small boat through the surging, dark waves of the vast sea.
The tumultuous sea and the frail boat contrasted sharply, instilling a sense of insignificance in humans compared to the formidable forces of nature.
Fortunately, not far ahead, a lighthouse was emanating a gentle light, guiding and hinting at the direction for passing vessels.
It also served to show players the way forward, suggesting that soon they might have to climb this tall tower.
At this time, the game’s protagonist was also on this small boat.
Due to the first-person perspective, viewers could only see two figures in yellow raincoats engaged in an argument as they rowed.
The content of their argument was quite bizarre.
They mentioned who should be rowing the boat.
Then they discussed why they came to such a forsaken place.
At one moment, they spoke of exercise, which then led to talk of thought experiments.
The entire conversation was very odd.
While the man and woman continued their squabble,
the woman turned and handed the player an exquisitely crafted wooden box.
The nameplate on the box read,
"Property of Booker DeWitt, The Seventh Legion, Wounded Knee River."
The nameplate directly identified the identity of the character controlled by the player, named Booker.
This was actually revealed in the demo as well.
After the player opened the wooden box,
inside was a compact Mauser gun with a square ammunition clip,
a few silver coins,
and a black and white photograph.
In the photo, a cute, innocent little girl with a big bow in her hair looked to be about ten years old, and her name was marked in the top right corner—Elizabeth.
On the back of the photo was a line of text with an instruction.
"Please bring her back to New York unharmed."
While the player was still inspecting the contents of the box,
the small boat had swayed to a stop at a wooden dockside platform amidst the storm.
Control was handed over to the player.
Dai followed the game’s prompts, climbing onto the platform via a wooden ladder nearby.
Looking back, the pair in the yellow raincoats had rowed away into the distance, their argumentative voices still intermittently carrying through the air, as if debating whether they would succeed this time.
"It seems there’s no way back for us, which probably means we have to climb the lighthouse ahead," Dai said, a trace of excitement in his voice: "Honestly, this is my first time playing a narrative FPS. I wonder what kind of surprise the renowned top player, known for quality games, will bring us this time."
While speaking, he had already taken control of Booker, walking up the winding, mountain-road style stairs and into the lighthouse.
Before he pushed open the ancient wooden door, a piece of paper was attached next to it.
"Booker, deliver the girl to us, and your debts will be wiped clean. This is your last chance."
Less than two minutes into the game, and hints of such nature had already appeared twice.
Both times mentioned that Booker had to bring the girl to a certain place, to certain people.
"The girl must refer to Elizabeth, I guess. From the clues provided so far, it seems our protagonist Booker is a retired veteran who has now been rehired. And it looks like he’s in a lot of debt, which is why he must embark on this journey—rescue? Kidnapping? Anyway, some kind of mission," Dai mused to himself as he pushed the door open.
Upon entering, hanging in view was a sign.
On the sign was written,
"We aim to wash away your sins."
Below the sign was a basin of water.
However, when Dai took control of the character and approached, he couldn’t interact with the basin of water.
Nonetheless, through its reflection, one could see the protagonist, Booker’s, distinctive countenance.
He appeared to be in his late thirties or early forties, with bold eyebrows and large eyes, strong features yet with a hint of dissipation, and a beard that seemed unshaven for several days.
After a brief exploration of the ground floor,
he collected a few silver coins and some pistol ammunition from nooks and crannies.
Then, Dai controlled the character to spiral up to the second floor of the lighthouse.
Upon reaching the second floor, the sight became somewhat sinister.
Actually, everything presented to the player from the start was quite eerie.
Incomprehensible dialogue, repeatedly provided notes, and a mission not yet explained.
But the presence of a dead body, tied to a chair in the middle of the second floor, further intensified the absurd and sinister atmosphere.
The deceased had a sack over his head, obscuring his face, and seemed to have been dead for a few days, as flies surrounded him with their disconcerting ’buzzing’ noise.
There was also a wooden sign hanging on his chest, displaying messages that seemed to warn and threaten.
"Don’t disappoint us."
"Looks like our employer isn’t so benevolent, putting pressure on our protagonist right from the start. It hints that if we don’t complete the mission, our fate might be the same as this guy," Dai clicked his tongue and then headed straight to the third floor.
The lighthouse wasn’t very tall, and reaching the third floor meant standing outside.
One glance revealed the boundless sea, with fierce wind and rain lashing the surface, creating enormous waves that engulfed everything in the distance.
And above, dark clouds loomed heavily.
It created an even more oppressive visual and atmospheric experience.
Besides that, there was a mechanical door in front of them.
Three bells hung in front of the door, each embossed with the images of a scroll, a key, and a dagger.
"I remember the NPC gave us a hint card in the wooden box earlier," Dai said as he pulled out the card to look.
Indeed, the card was marked with the symbols scroll*1, key*2, dagger*2.
