Chapter 684: Chapter 684 Comprehensive Evolution_1
ƒreewebɳovel.comYou hid in the undergrowth, watching as the earth dog was only a few meters away from you when the human child’s tongue suddenly elongated. With fluid dexterity, the tongue coiled around the earth dog and began dragging it back, slowly pulling it bit by bit. The earth dog struggled at first, but you noticed that the surface of the zombie child’s tongue was covered with backward-facing barbs, sharp like steel needles, which dismembered the earth dog on the spot!
As you watched the zombie child consume the bloodied dog flesh, bite by bite, you felt a wrenching in your stomach.
The zombie child quickly devoured the earth dog and turned to leave. You had just breathed a sigh of relief when you suddenly felt a twinge on your scalp, and instinctively ducked your head.
"Shush!" The blood-red tongue, covered with barbs, shot past your scalp like a harpooned fish spear. Had your reaction not been quick, that zombie child’s tongue would have pierced through your skull.
Without waiting for the lengthy tongue to retract, you swung the Ring Head Knife down hard on it, chopping off a section of that terrifying weapon.
"Roar!!!" The zombie child let out an angry roar and charged straight at you!
In the critical moment, you sidestepped and grabbed the knife with your backhand. As the zombie child brushed past you, you struck vertically with the reverse grip. The child’s head was severed cleanly and flew far away, eventually rolling into a river by the roadside.
Hiss—
Sigh—
You let out a long breath.
You continued to creep cautiously through the bushes, making as little noise as possible. The surrounding zombies had all evolved; they now moved as fast as humans and had developed terrifying hunting abilities. This discovery was extremely lethal for you!
Previously, most zombies you knew moved slowly and were not aggressively strong, but these zombies had mutated in various body parts and organs after evolution, to better hunt their prey.
The short distance of a few hundred meters took you almost half an hour. By the time you reached the bridge, your back was drenched with sweat.
This was just the beginning of your journey, and you were getting worried, even regretting a little. However, since you had already set out, there was no reason to return without having achieved anything—that wasn’t your style.
There were no zombies at either end of the bridge, and only a few cars were stuck in the middle, posing no problem for a runner. Luckily, there were no zombies in sight for the moment.
You dashed across the bridge as quickly as possible and then headed into the farm fields, leaving the highway behind. The fields were somewhat muddy, but clear visibility meant you could react quickly if zombies appeared.
Following the ridges, you quietly moved towards the buildings ahead. Soon, some zombies came into view, surrounding a seemingly ordinary house. The house was enclosed by a high wall—probably a prevention against thieves—that was topped with decorative steel nets. On those sharp nets hung three penetrated bodies, one of which was a child.
For you, child zombies posed the greatest threat. Their evolution was evidently much faster than that of adult zombies, with variations in their development. You noted that this child’s legs were noticeably longer and bowed, suggesting a unique ability in leaping. The child zombie’s actual cause of death was an arrow through the head; the other two bodies had suffered the same fate, each killed by a single shot. They were military-grade crossbow bolts. For you, who had a special fondness for melee weapons, finding such military crossbow bolts would greatly increase your chances of survival.
You slowly approached.
The private residence is the most common type of building in the rural areas of Jiangnan, a small building, standalone, and single-family. Although not a villa, it was not far off. It was clear that the residents in this area were fairly affluent; every household had an elaborate interior, and there were sedans parked in the yards.
From the behavior of the zombies, it seemed likely that there were survivors inside the small building.
One essential thing for surviving in this post-apocalyptic world was to act with caution, to observe in all directions and listen attentively, as carelessness often led to mortal danger. At the same time, companions were indispensable for survival; the odds of survival for ten people were definitely higher than for an individual since humans are, after all, social animals.
However, you couldn’t just approach foolishly - who knows what kind of people were inside that household.
You quietly sneaked into another private residence. This one was also lavishly decorated, with an X6 parked at the front door, the driver’s door left open and covered in bloodstains. The building had three floors. Wielding a Ring Head Knife, you first carefully checked around before closing all the doors and windows. Luckily, in the master bedroom on the second floor, you found a box containing many household medicines, including some antibiotics.
The third floor seemed to be a child’s room; there were three rooms, one of which was empty. Judging by the decor, one room looked like it belonged to a young girl, and the other to a high school student. In the high schooler’s room, you discovered something that almost made you cheer—an MP military sniper crossbow!
This high school student was probably a bladed weapon enthusiast like you. In his bookcase, you found ten pure steel hunting arrows, powerful enough to penetrate an adult boar; there was also a box of steel balls, about fifty or sixty in total by your estimate.
With the MP sniper crossbow in hand, you even felt confident facing the terrifying T2 and taking it down in one shot!
The dedicated sniper scope on the crossbow was no longer of use, but your own eyes were undoubtedly much more effective. Similarly, you secured the door, opened the window, and set up the sniper crossbow on the windowsill, aiming at the zombies below.
"Snap!" A steel ball hit the wall outside the window, and you looked up to see a young man, a student to be precise, standing in the third-floor window opposite. You noticed he was still wearing a school uniform, a high school uniform. The boy waved at you, then pointed at the zombies around his house and mimed a gunshot to the head.
You smiled, nodded, and gestured an "OK" sign.
Soon, every zombie around the house that you "called out" met their end, all with headshots, without exception!
The boy was amazed, giving you thumbs-up repeatedly.
After you had taken care of all the zombies downstairs, the boy quickly ran out with a backpack on his back.
"Brother, open the gate!"
Soon, the boy’s anxious voice echoed at the door.
You opened the door, and the boy hurriedly darted inside, catching his breath, "Huff! Huff! That scared the life out of me!"
