Chapter 939: 682 City

"Beautiful, where to?"

The taxi driver was driving while constantly glancing at the rearview mirror.

The girl in the backseat had been picked up from the train station, and it seemed strange that she got into the cab without naming a destination, asking only to be driven around.

Although such fares were welcome for drivers like him, since he charged by the distance, he couldn’t make money in bad faith.

He had been driving the girl around for more than twenty minutes, nearly covering the entire Sha City area, uncertain of where to continue.

He surely couldn’t just take her on the same route again, could he?

"Driver, what’s fun to do around here?"

The young woman wearing a peaked cap asked.

Upon hearing this, the driver instantly understood that she was from out of town; of course, he had already suspected as much during their aimless drive.

"Beautiful, are you here as a tourist?"

The young woman, who had been quietly observing the city.

through the window, paused before replying, "Suppose so."

Visiting Sha City as a tourist?

The driver’s lips moved, but no matter what, he couldn’t degrade his hometown. After pondering for a moment, he suggested, "How about I take you to Fantawild?"

"Fantawild Adventure Park?"

"Yes, I’ve heard it’s quite fun. Lots of people come here just to experience it."

"You’ve never been?"

The young woman’s polite address pleased the driver, and he opened up, "No, the tickets are too expensive. For those of us who drive taxis, it’s unaffordable."

"You must earn a decent amount each day from driving. Even if the tickets are pricey, it’s just a day or two’s wages at most. Maybe you are just more frugal."

The young woman was also quite talkative.

"Ah."

The driver sighed, "It’s not about being frugal. I have elderly parents and young children to care for; there’s no choice. Unlike you young folks, carefree, wanting to see the vast world and just going for it."

While speaking, the driver glanced at the fare meter, which had already exceeded thirty. In their Sha City, that was considered a sizable fare.

"Beautiful, shall we go to Fantawild?"

He confirmed.

"Fantawild will be too crowded, and going now wouldn’t be very satisfying, I think."

The driver nodded in agreement, "Right, you should go to Fantawild early if you want to, otherwise, there’s no time to enjoy all the attractions. It’s the afternoon now; going indeed doesn’t seem worthwhile."

During their casual conversation, the taxi arrived at Capital City Road.

This road was named after the capital.

It was also the busiest area in Sha City.

There were commercial streets lining both sides.

"Driver, Sha City is quite lively, isn’t it?"

The woman looked out the window.

At the red light at the intersection, the driver braked and glanced at the flow of people outside, and with a smile, he introduced, "This is the central area of Sha City. If it’s not lively here, then it’s all over."

He then looked back and asked, "Is this your first visit?"

The young woman nodded.

"It’s quite rare to see young people like you visiting Sha City as tourists."

The driver couldn’t resist saying.

There were indeed no shortage of tourists in Sha City. Over the past two decades, although Sha City had gradually lagged behind in the times, the fame of its historical legacy remained.

Yet, most of those who came to Sha City were middle-aged or older people on organized tours.

"I have a friend who’s from here."

The young woman explained.

"No wonder then."

The driver suddenly understood, then asked further, "Then why don’t you go find them?"

"I don’t remember where he lives."

The driver smiled, "Why not give them a call? If you’re visiting, the host will surely want to welcome you."

The young woman offered a faint smile and didn’t mention that the person was not here. After pondering, she said, "He seems to live on Zhang Juzheng Road, driver, do you know this road?"

Jiang Chen’s ID card, she had of course seen before, and vaguely remembered this place name.

"You mean Zhang Juzheng Street, right? Of course, I know it, but that road isn’t in Sha District. It’s inside the city, we need to turn around."

The red light turned to green.

The driver drove forward for a stretch then turned the vehicle.

About ten or so minutes later, the quaint contours of the ancient city walls began to appear in Ai Qian’s view.

Was this the ancient city wall he used to prattle about with such pride?

The corners of Ai Qian’s mouth lifted unconsciously.

"This is the East Gate, the busiest one in the city area, also the one with the best scenery. Tourists from other places come here, the tour buses all stop here."

The taxi passed through the moat on either side, drove into the city gate tunnel, then pulled over to a stop at the roadside.

"See, it’s a one-way street; can’t drive in there, or else it’d be a long detour. Just walk along this road, and you’ll reach Zhang Juzheng Street."

Ai Qian’s luck should be considered good; she had encountered an honest driver. If it were another driver, he would probably have been only too happy to take a longer route, eager to earn that little bit extra.

"Thank you."

Ai Qian used her phone to scan the code and pay.

"Enjoy your trip."

The driver called out as she got out of the car.

Ai Qian gave a little smile and pushed the door open to get out.

The taxi left.

Ai Qian stood by the roadside and started walking along the small path next to the city wall.

Outside the city.

"Mom, didn’t Auntie Li call you over for mahjong? Give me the keys; I’ll go and clean up."

Taking advantage of Thanksgiving, Hong Xiaoyu rode the train back home from the provincial city.

Of course.

Alone.

Although his cousin had suggested he invite Duan Xueying, after thinking it over, he still felt it was somewhat... inappropriate.

"Sure, but don’t complain later. Your brother hardly ever stays there all year round; it’s definitely going to be quite dirty."

"Leave it to me."

"You rascal."

Jiang Huazi eyed her son with a smile and handed him the keys, "Come back after you’ve cleaned up. Don’t wander off; your dad’s going to bring roast duck when he comes home."

"Got it."

Hong Xiaoyu took the keys, went out, and headed downstairs. He left the complex and scanned a shared electric scooter at the complex’s entrance. He leisurely rode towards the city center.

After spending more than a year in a big city like River City, he instead found himself appreciating the merits of his hometown.

In a crowded and busy city like River City, along with the whole city, everyone seemed like clockwork machines, unable to feel this kind of free and casual breeze blowing in their face.

Suddenly.

Hong Xiaoyu suddenly wondered if maybe he should listen to his cousin’s suggestion, to try inviting that girl.

If she were sitting on the back of the electric scooter now, she would probably like this city too.

Alright.

Such shared electric scooters did not have back seats.

And would someone from her kind of family be willing to ride on an electric scooter?

Hong Xiaoyu laughed, leaned forward, gripped the handlebars, and revved the electric scooter to its limits, zipping across the zebra crossing, then passing over the ancient bridge spanning the moat.

Riding alongside the outer city wall, he entered the city from another East Gate specially designed for vehicles that couldn’t travel through it.

More and more people were coming here to visit.

The tour buses from his childhood had never been this full.

Opposite Zhang Juzheng’s former residence, Hong Xiaoyu parked the scooter, paid and locked it, looked at the groups of middle-aged and elderly tourists for a while, was about to turn around and head for the Sanjian Courtyard when a figure caught the corner of his eye.

He paused in his actions, and then looked toward the young woman wearing a duckbill cap.

She was absentmindedly gazing up at the city tower.

Hong Xiaoyu’s brows furrowed unconsciously.

Why did he feel that this girl looked somewhat familiar?
