Chapter 87: 087 Roche limit
Luo Peng seemed thoughtful.
He understood, but not completely.
After all, being a lovesick puppy was something he had absolutely no experience in.
"So what should I do to make amends?"
"There’s no remedy."
Luo Peng was startled, "Damn, are you messing with me?"
"There are so many beautiful girls out there; why do you insist on hanging yourself on one tree? Pursuing her is too difficult; is it necessary?"
Jiang Chen spoke earnestly.
"Then why did you pursue Li Shuru in the past?"
Luo Peng immediately retorted.
Jiang Chen was stunned, suddenly at a loss for words.
If it weren’t for Ai Qian’s cautionary tale and the incoming cash reward for being a lovesick puppy, he probably wouldn’t be interested in women for a while.
But, of course, he couldn’t tell Luo Peng that.
"Hurry up and give me some advice; even if I don’t succeed, I have to try, right? I should die without any regrets, don’t you agree?"
Jiang Chen was silent.
"You two, what are you whispering about there? If you continue to talk, please leave the classroom."
The teacher’s voice came through the loudspeaker.
Clearly, Jiang Chen and Luo Peng, who had been whispering, had been discovered.
Many people glanced over at them.
Even Luo Li’er in the row ahead involuntarily looked back.
Luckily, both Jiang Chen and Luo Peng reacted quickly and immediately bowed their heads, nearly burying their faces in the desk.
Seeing that the two students seemed to have some shame, the teacher did not press on and continued with the lesson.
Jiang Chen and Luo Peng slowly lifted their heads.
"What are you hiding from?"
Luo Peng looked puzzled.
"And what are you hiding from?"
Jiang Chen countered.
Before Luo Peng could respond, he quickly changed the subject: "This girl should be rather artsy; those tricks you used before are unlikely to work."
"Artsy?"
Luo Peng’s attention was immediately diverted.
After being warned by the teacher, the two were even more cautious in their communication, lips moving without their bodies stirring.
Remembering the sketchpad that fell to the ground that night, Jiang Chen muttered as quietly as a mosquito: "Can you draw? If you could give her a painting you made, maybe it would slightly change her impression of you."
"Paint? I can’t do that!"
Appearing to listen to the lecture intently on the outside, Luo Peng’s lips rapidly moved as he spoke very fast.
"What if I buy one?"
"No way."
Jiang Chen decisively rejected, "I’ve said before, you have to be sincere. If you buy one, you might deceive her temporarily, but it will be exposed sooner or later."
"So what do I do? It’s probably too late to learn to paint now."
"I’m not a miracle worker; I don’t have that many ideas."
Luo Peng thought for a while on his own, "So you mean, material stuff won’t work on her..."
"Hmm."
"Although I can’t paint, I can write love letters; that’s artsy enough, right?"
An idea struck Luo Peng.
"Are you sure?"
Jiang Chen was a bit surprised.
"Heh heh, don’t look at me now all debonair; back in middle school, I was actually quite chubby, and back then, it was with love letters that I won over the class monitor."
Luo Peng, who believed in action, immediately borrowed paper and pen from a student behind him and began to write then and there.
"You are my Roche limit; I slowly draw near, slowly become engulfed, slowly tearing apart my last bit of rationality."
Jiang Chen, looking on, was blown away.
Although he often skipped classes, Luo Peng had managed to get into East Sea University on his own merit, which was fundamentally different from those like Liang Zhenlun who got in through back doors.
Such a love letter requires some level of education to write, and probably even to understand.
In astronomy, there’s a definition called the Roche limit. Planets and their moons are drawn closer by gravitational forces, but there is a minimum safe distance they must maintain. Once that Roche limit is crossed, tidal forces will tear that moon apart.
Then that shattered planet will turn into cosmic dust, gradually accumulating around the planet, evolving into a ring, embracing that planet. A single shattering leads to an eternal embrace.
Luo Peng, having quickly finished, lifted his head and picked up the note.
"How about it?"
"It’s not bad, but..."
"But what?"
"It only highlights your own desire and passion, too exaggerated and not realistic. After all, you don’t really know each other, and expressing your feelings in such a forceful and unrestrained manner is likely to pressure the other person, or even cause dislike and resentment."
Luo Peng was stunned for a moment before he lowered his head to ponder over the love letter he had written.
"Jiang Chen, you’ve got a point! What you said makes so much sense!"
"Shh!"
Without another word, he tore up the note on the spot.
"Jiang Chen, why don’t you help me write it?"
"I can’t."
Jiang Chen replied without hesitation.
"Modest for what? If you can’t, then I’m a ghost. Who are you? You’re ’Jiang the talented writer’."
Luo Peng immediately slapped on some flattery, then earnestly pleaded, "Come on, brother, please."
Jiang Chen gave a wry smile.
"Here."
Luo Peng thrust the pen into his hand, spread out a sheet of paper for him, and looked on expectantly.
With no other choice, Jiang Chen had to start writing.
"Awesome!"
Looking at the love letter Jiang Chen wrote, Luo Peng was full of admiration, his spirits lifted.
"You’re something else, Jiang Chen!"
"Take it."
Jiang Chen passed the paper and pen back.
"If you’re going to help, go all the way. Jiang Chen, why not deliver it to her for me?"
Luo Peng asked for even more.
Jiang Chen quickly refused, firm in his decision, "Absolutely not."
"If I give it to her, she might not even take it. Just this once, and not again."
Luo Peng pleaded.
Jiang Chen seemed to feel very uncomfortable.
"What are you afraid of? She doesn’t know you. You just need to say it’s being delivered for someone else, right?"
Luo Peng found it strange.
After all, in his impression, his buddy was not the shy and introverted type.
"This really won’t work..."
Luo Peng couldn’t guess Jiang Chen’s unspeakable dilemma and stopped trying to persuade him further. Acting swiftly so as to not give anyone time to react, he patted the shoulder of the girl in front of him and immediately bent down, burying his face in his arms on the desk, pretending to be asleep.
Damn it!
Jiang Chen’s face changed, unable to react in time.
Soon.
The ponytail swung as Luo Li’er looked back in surprise, then saw an awkward and stiff smile.
A trace of astonishment appeared subconsciously in her obsidian-like dark eyes.
Obviously.
She seemed to have some impression of Jiang Chen.
Even though he cursed Luo Peng under his breath, Jiang Chen was indeed loyal enough to quickly adjust his emotions and feigned nonchalance as he passed the note.
"Someone asked me to give this to you."
Luo Li’er’s gaze slowly dropped from his face to the folded piece of paper.
Luo Peng chose Jiang Chen to deliver the note, which was indeed the right choice. Seeing that Luo Li’er was about to reach for it, something unexpected happened.
"That boy, please come over here."
It was the teacher.
Jiang Chen’s face stiffened as he looked towards Luo Li’er.
But the girl wasn’t very noble, quickly withdrawing her hand and turning her head away when she saw the teacher noticed.
Jiang Chen, still holding out the note, then looked towards Luo Peng.
Luo Peng lay with his face down on the desk, motionless as if he were truly asleep.
All alone.
"That boy, did you hear me? Bring what’s in your hands and come here."
The middle-aged female teacher spoke again, her voice tinged with a hint of annoyance.
