Chapter 689: 547 Goal-done

"Mr. Cui, we meet again,"

the prosecutor’s office.

Che Changmin put down a cup of tea and pushed it over.

"The last time I saw Prosecutor Che, must’ve been four or five years ago, when you were still in Gwangju before transferring to Seoul."

Cui Zaiye’s smile was serene.

"Mr. Cui has a good memory,"

Che Changmin sat down.

Cui Zaiye picked up the cup of tea, "Prosecutor Che reaching out to me, what’s the matter? You know, I’m pretty busy and I’m afraid I don’t have much time."

"Understood."

Che Changmin’s attitude was friendly, "Then I’ll make a long story short. A few days ago, there was a riot; over a hundred thugs ignored the laws and regulations, indulging in a reckless and bloody brawl, resulting in serious casualties."

"Oh?"

Cui Zaiye, who was sipping his drink, raised an eyebrow in surprise, "That happened?"

"Mr. Cui is a well-known figure in Seoul. Such a big incident, and you hadn’t heard about it?"

"Heh, I’m just a simple businessman, focused every day on how to manage the company well, to make more contributions to society. Prosecutor Che should understand, the amount I donate to welfare organizations each year isn’t a small sum. I’m painstakingly devoted, never daring to slack off for fear that if I slip up, those poor people won’t get relief, and will suffer from hunger and cold. Where would I get the extra energy to worry about unrelated matters?"

While holding the teacup, Cui Zaiye spoke unhurriedly, "What Prosecutor Che mentioned just now, I really hadn’t heard of it."

Che Changmin smiled amiably.

"Mr. Cui knows nothing about it, but why is it that so many of the thugs we arrested are acquainted with you, Mr. Cui? Can you explain that?"

"Acquainted with me?"

Immediately, Cui Zaiye’s expression turned solemn; he put down his teacup and said indignantly, "That’s complete slander! I, Cui Zaiye, am upright and honest in my dealings. How could I possibly have contacts with these criminals? Prosecutor Che, you must investigate this thoroughly."

Che Changmin’s smile did not waver.

In this line of work, you come to realize something.

The real best actors are never on television.

The higher the status, the better they are at acting.

Just like the Cui Zaiye sitting in front of me.

Mimicking perfectly, down to the finest detail, the image of a law-abiding, upright businessman.

"Mr. Cui, the reason we invited you over is to get to the bottom of this. Since you’ve said you don’t know them, then please answer one question for me. Why do so many of these thugs belong either to your company or to companies you’ve invested in?"

Cui Zaiye’s expression didn’t change as he quickly replied, "Prosecutor Che, you’ve never run a business. I’ve invested in so many companies, and there are so many industries I manage, I myself am not very clear on all the details, let alone those employees. There are many I’ve never even met. Are you saying I should be held responsible if they commit crimes? In the laws of our country, there is no such thing as collective punishment, right?"

"Of course there isn’t."

Che Changmin was mentally prepared.

If he was that easy to handle, the crime syndicate boss sitting before him wouldn’t still be at large.

"Mr. Cui, no need to get worked up, I’m just trying to understand the situation,"

Cui Zaiye was no longer smiling as he watched the prosecutor who seemed very likely to advance further.

"Am I worked up?"

Che Changmin pursed his lips slightly.

"Prosecutor Che, any other questions? If not, I must be going, I have an engagement to attend to."

"Then I won’t keep Mr. Cui from his work."

Che Changmin did not make it difficult, simply stood up, and extended his hand politely.

But Cui Zaiye seemed not to notice, pushed his chair back, and ignored the gesture.

"He’s too arrogant, Prosecutor Che, why didn’t you detain him?"

Watching the unruffled figure leave, the assistant complained bitterly.

"Detain him on what grounds?"

"According to procedure, we can hold him for at least twenty-four hours, to knock down his arrogance!"

Che Changmin remained calm.

"If we kept him any longer, there probably would be a call coming in demanding his release."

The assistant turned his head.

"The roots of spreading darkness are never in the darkness itself. Darkness is not scary; what’s scary is when dark clouds overhead obscure the sun."

The assistant was stunned.

"Interrogate those thugs, one by one."

Che Changmin left.

Outside the prosecutor’s office.

Henchmen respectfully opened the car door.

Cui Zaiye, who walked out unharmed, bent down and got into the car.

"Boss, did that Che give you any trouble?"

Two cars, one in front and one behind, guarded Cui Zaiye in the middle.

"He’s not capable enough."

Cui Zaiye lost the pleasant facade he had in the prosecutor’s office, his eyes cold and scornful.

"This Che is truly clueless. Boss, do you want to..."

The subordinate hinted at violence.

"Do you know why he’s still alive despite having offended so many? It’s because everyone is waiting for someone else to make a move. You think I want to be that knife?"

The subordinate immediately fell silent.

"Make sure those inside keep their mouths shut tight; I’ll take good care of their families,"

Cui Zaiye said in an enigmatic tone.

The subordinate didn’t feel comforted by this; instead, he felt a shiver down his spine.

"Understood."

Noryangjin.

A wealthy district of Seoul that ranks high along with Cheongdam-dong and Gangnam, it’s home to a high-income population, with many film companies also located here.

Three black Mercedes stopped outside a luxurious villa.

The driver got out of the car and respectfully opened the door.

Cui Zaiye stepped out and walked towards the villa.

"Ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong..."

The villa door opened.

A middle-aged woman who looked like a housekeeper peered out and then called out respectfully, "Mr. Cui."
