Chapter 608: 507 What Night Has No Moon (Seeking Monthly Passes!)
"Get in the car, I’ll take you guys back."
A big group of people walked out from beneath the peach and plum trees to the parking lot.
As legal professionals, they naturally understood the hazards of drunk driving and had already called designated drivers ahead of time, who had now arrived.
Ding He considerately extended his invitation, his ride a grand BMW X5.
Fang Qing grabbed Tong Dan’s arm, beating her to the punch, "No need to trouble you, Lawyer Ding. Besides, it’s not on the way. We’ll just take the subway."
Ding He didn’t mind, "It’s alright, I’m not in a hurry anyway."
"Really, it’s not necessary. Tong Dan and I want to keep exploring the area."
Fang Qing declined again.
"Alright then."
Ding He was very gracious and didn’t insist any further. Before getting in his car, he didn’t forget to politely say goodbye to Tong Dan, "Miss Tong, see you next time."
"Thank you, Lawyer Ding, for hosting us tonight."
Tong Dan smiled politely.
One by one, the cars left the parking lot.
The people from Tian He Law Firm dispersed.
"Fang Qing, I’ve noticed something. Your ’boss’ seems to have a thing for you."
Once everyone had left, Tong Dan nudged her best friend’s arm.
"Don’t talk nonsense."
"I’m not talking nonsense. Your firm has more than just one female employee, so why didn’t he offer to take anyone else home? Just because you’re his assistant? That reason alone might not be convincing enough."
Tong Dan rattled on, she had to admit, it seemed like she might indeed have a point.
Fang Qing turned a deaf ear, ignoring the implications as she turned her head, "You seemed a bit too enthusiastic with him tonight. Don’t tell me you’ve taken a liking to Lawyer Ding?"
Tong Dan burst into a speechless laugh.
"What’s it to me? I was being friendly with him for your sake," she retorted, and then, with a self-pitying sigh, added.
"Ah... I know my place. He’s so accomplished, a native of the Capital City. Why would he ever be interested in me?"
Fang Qing couldn’t be bothered to respond.
"Why didn’t you let him take us back just now?"
"Like I said, it’s not on the way."
Tong Dan scoffed, "You might think it’s out of the way, but he might not see it like that. For someone who wants to give you a ride, any distance is on the way."
Fang Qing couldn’t help but smile wryly, her words failing her. She shook her head in the end, saying nothing.
"Let’s go. Are you staying at my place tonight?"
"Might as well. I just happened to fly to the Capital City, so I took the chance to come see you. I have to leave tomorrow."
While speaking, Tong Dan started looking around again.
"What are you looking at?"
Fang Qing asked, puzzled.
It wasn’t the first time. This girl had been occasionally looking around mysteriously inside the restaurant, too.
"Nothing,"
Tong Dan feigned nonchalance, linking arms with her. "Come on, go for a walk with me."
The two good friends, navigating their own lives as they grew from girls into women, crossed the street and strolled leisurely through the streets of the Capital City.
Just like the song ’Later’ that had been performed recently under the peach and plum trees, not just limited to love, on the road of life, how many people walk along, only to find themselves unknowingly lost in the crowd?
"When is there ever no moon, or no cypress and cedars? It’s just that there are few idle people like us."
Tong Dan linked arms with Fang Qing, letting out a mature sigh.
Fang Qing chuckled, impulsively looking up at the night sky.
There were no cypress and cedars here.
It was rare to see a clear moon in the Capital City.
"Dan Dan, are you still single?"
Hearing this strange yet familiar address, Tong Dan tightened her grip on her friend’s arm.
Since graduating from high school, Fang Qing had rarely called her that.
"Yeah, I’m still a pitiful single dog."
"Any love interests?"
Fang Qing continued to ask.
"Ah."
Tong Dan sighed, "What’s the use? It doesn’t matter if someone’s interested or not; if they don’t like me back, it’s all in vain."
Fang Qing didn’t agree.
Tong Dan was different from her. Just from how she had quickly blended in with the colleagues from the law firm, it was evident, especially with her outstanding appearance, that Tong Dan was definitely not lacking in male admirers.
"Qing Gege, it’s your fault, too, you know? You meet so many accomplished people, but you never think to introduce any to me. You should keep the good things within the family. Don’t you understand?"
Fang Qing seemed oblivious to her best friend’s complaint.
It was true that she knew many accomplished people; just her alumni and classmates from the School of Political Science and Law were many of the elites.
Not introducing anyone to Tong Dan wasn’t because of any pettiness that might come from a ’plastic’ friendship.
Whether she was right or not, not interfering in anyone’s romantic life had always been her principle.
She neither had the right nor the responsibility to do so.
"You probably know more men than I do. Do you still need my introductions?"
Tong Dan side-eyed her, "Your words sound kind of odd, don’t they?"
"I’m just stating the facts. Don’t overthink it."
Tong Dan smiled knowingly.
Perhaps she wasn’t as book-smart as Fang Qing, but in other aspects, especially when it came to dealing with men, she was confident she was stronger than Fang Qing.
"Forget about introducing someone to me; I am magnanimous and won’t hold it against you. But what if I introduced someone to you? Actually, I do know a few people who might be a good match for you."
"Do you think I have the energy to manage a relationship right now?"
Fang Qing laughed.
"Why wouldn’t you? Love and career don’t conflict. Based on your logic, should career women not date? How would the country’s population crisis be solved then? You’re a top talent cultivated by the country with great effort, you should be sharing the country’s concerns."
Tong Dan made her case seriously, typical of a flight attendant, eloquent and persuasive. Fang Qing found herself at a loss for words for a moment.
