Chapter 557: Sin City (Reward for more updates! 8K today!)
[Pei Yunxi’s favorability toward you has increased.]
[Favorability has met the mission requirements.]
[The strategy mission has concluded.]
[Reward distribution is complete.]
Hollywood.
On the film set.
Gazing at the bustling crew, Jiang Chen was delighted and felt fulfilled,
as seeing the world and inspecting the set rounded off his experience.
Finally.
The mission that once seemed impossible to him had come to an end.
And quite satisfactorily at that.
The road is indeed made by walking.
As long as one is resolute and strives tirelessly, even the most distant goals can be hopeful to achieve.
Of course.
Persistence must be coupled with intelligence.
There is no such thing as unearned pleasures in this world.
These 12 billion, he had earned them through sheer hard work, and not without risks.
A single slip could have resulted in all efforts being in vain.
"Her safety is now in your hands," he said.
The two top-tier mercenaries were also on site, protecting Pei Yunxi’s safety around the clock.
Jiang Chen planned to leave today; after all, Pei Yunxi was about to get busy with the movie shoot, and his presence would be redundant.
It wasn’t about finishing the mission and then casually walking away.
He couldn’t just grandly declare his upright intentions and then immediately flip a switch, expecting to take advantage of her.
Though the thought was tempting and no longer impacted anything, Jiang Chen ultimately cared about his reputation.
He would let his "glorious image" last a little longer.
Annabelle remained traditionally unresponsive.
Dwayne silently nodded in assent.
Though his interaction with these professional mercenaries had been brief, Jiang Chen had come to understand their nature.
Expecting eloquence from them was wishful thinking; flattering words like "You’ll have to step over our dead bodies to harm her" were never to fall from their lips. Nonetheless, Jiang Chen had no doubt they would defend the value of their ten million US dollar commission with their lives.
A simple nod was enough to establish trust.
Jiang Chen moved forward.
"I’m leaving," he said.
He sat down beside her.
Pei Yunxi, engrossed in her script, acknowledged with a nonchalant "Hmm."
Jiang Chen felt a tinge of annoyance.
Wasn’t her reaction a bit too indifferent?
"Aren’t you going to see me off?" he asked.
Pei Yunxi looked up. "I’m about to shoot, and I can’t leave. I can’t expect a whole crew to wait for me, can I?"
Jiang Chen was at a loss for words.
The mission was complete.
That kiss certainly wasn’t an illusion.
But why did it seem like nothing had changed?
Could it be that stars are really different from ordinary women?
Jiang Chen cleared his throat. "Well... how about a farewell kiss then?"
Jiang Chen braced himself for a rebuke, but reality once again took him by surprise.
"There are too many people."
"..."
Too many people?
"So, how about we find a quieter place?"
Pei Yunxi just looked at him without a word.
Jiang Chen forced a wry smile. "Okay then, I’m off."
"Aren’t you going to say goodbye to Director Felton?"
Jiang Chen glanced at Thomas Felton, who was making a scene not too far away.
The tyrant of the set truly lived up to his reputation.
"Let’s not disturb his work," Jiang Chen replied.
"Hmm."
"I’m going."
Without any signs of sorrow, Jiang Chen stood up and strutted away casually.
Pei Yunxi watched his figure disappear from view before lowering her head to continue reading the script.
Through the blue skies and white clouds, a Boeing airplane soared by.
Jiang Chen’s eyes returned from the airplane window.
"Brother Bai, tell me, am I a bit of a scumbag?"
Just a... "bit" of a scumbag?
To prevent the other from giving a courteous reply, Jiang Chen added, "Tell me the truth."
"I don’t think so," said Bai Haoran with a straight face.
Jiang Chen motioned for him to elaborate.
"If this were ancient times, would you still feel there’s something wrong?" Bai Haoran retorted.
Jiang Chen shook his head.
"But it’s not ancient times."
"Although it’s not ancient times, the principle remains the same. Social resources will always lean towards those with capabilities; it’s a rule that no one can change. As long as it’s consensual, who has the right to judge? On the contrary, I think you are a person of deep feelings and sincerity," Bai Haoran elaborated.
Deep feelings and sincerity.
Jiang Chen couldn’t help but laugh.
"Brother Bai, you’re getting better at flattering," he teased.
"I’m speaking the truth," Bai Haoran replied, not a bit ashamed. "If any man were in your position, he couldn’t have done better than you."
Perhaps there was an element of flattery in his words, but they were also genuinely how Bai Haoran felt.
An average boss would probably not take women seriously at all.
And even more so for someone at the pinnacle of the world pyramid.
"No wonder people like to hear flattery; I do feel better now," Jiang Chen mused.
Bai Haoran couldn’t help but chuckle as well. He initially wanted to say that a man like you is doomed to have a complicated love life, but he held back considering their respective statuses.
Jiang Chen turned his gaze back to the sea of clouds outside the window.
The plane roared past.
The gambling capital of the world.
Las Vegas.
Jiang Chen was supposed to go to Seattle, but Li Shuru said she and Xue Yali’s next stop was Las Vegas. To avoid trouble, she simply had him rendezvous there.
After disembarking the plane, Jiang Chen and Bai Haoran took a taxi to the hotel.
Li Shuru would arrive tomorrow.
"It certainly has more grandeur than Aocheng," Bai Haoran remarked as he admired the luxurious buildings rising one after another outside the window.
He had never been to Meilijian before, and naturally, this was his first visit to Las Vegas, but he had definitely been to Aocheng.
Unlike Jiang Chen, who, apart from East Sea and his small hometown, had hardly traveled anywhere else.
