Chapter 491: 435 Newspaper
"Mr. Dai, he has been waiting outside for two hours already."
Tushun Automobile Headquarters.
The assistant came in to report.
Dai Hui, who had been in his office all morning, lifted his head, took off his glasses, and set them on the desk.
"Let him in."
"Yes."
"Bring in another two cups of tea."
Not long after.
Ren Yan walked into the office.
Within just a few days, the man seemed to have aged considerably. After a bitter two-hour wait, he showed no signs of discontent, his suit crisp, a briefcase in hand, still wearing a warm smile on his face.
This was the demeanor and responsibility expected of a man.
"I was in a meeting just now, sorry to have kept you waiting."
Dai Hui, smiling as he got up, as hospitable as ever, greeted, "Have a seat."
The assistant brought in the tea.
"What brings you here today?"
Dai Hui asked with a smile.
Without beating around the bush, Ren Yan replied, "If it weren’t important, I wouldn’t dare waste Mr. Dai’s precious time."
He seemed to joke as he spoke, opening the briefcase he was carrying at the same time.
Dai Hui’s eyes flickered, wanting to stop him, but his lips moved without uttering a word.
Ren Yan took a document bound in a brown leather folder out of the bag and set it on the coffee table in front of Dai Hui.
Dai Hui’s smile did not fade.
"What’s this?"
"You’ll know once you look at it."
Ren Yan kept the tone as if between friends.
Dai Hui glanced at him, smiled, and picked up the leather folder, opening it, and began to read the papers inside.
"Statement on Terminating Cooperation with Tushun Automobile..."
A line of black text instantly came into view.
Dai Hui’s expression shifted subtly as he quickly browsed through the document, his smile gradually fading.
"Ren Yan, what do you mean by this?"
He looked up, eyeing his longtime business partner and friend.
"Isn’t it very clear what is written on this?"
Ren Yan replied with a smile, "I’ve been grateful for your support over the years, but I think Tushun is about to hit the fast track, and I’m afraid I can’t keep up with Tushun’s pace, so I’d rather not hold you back."
Dai Hui pursed his lips.
"Creating a car that allows our countrymen to stand tall was your dream. Now with substantial support from Jinhai, I’m sure you’ll achieve twice the result with half the effort. You need a stronger partner, not a small workshop like ours."
Ren Yan said with a smile, "I’ve already signed the document."
Dai Hui slowly placed the statement back down.
"Alright, let’s not worry over this. Business is business; we mustn’t let emotions interfere."
Ren Yan closed his briefcase, tucked it under his arm, "You carry on with your work, I’ll be going now."
"Have you figured out a solution for the loan issue?"
Dai Hui suddenly spoke up, no longer feigning ignorance.
He knew he had done nothing wrong, but the other party’s actions inevitably made him feel a hint of shame.
It wasn’t a plea for help; not even half a word was mentioned. Instead, Ren Yan proactively severed ties, clearly to prevent Dai Hui from being dragged down.
Ren Yan fell silent for a moment then nonchalantly said, "There will be a way when we get to the mountain. There’s always a solution. If it really comes to it, I’ll just give them the factory and rise again elsewhere."
"I’m leaving now."
With the briefcase in hand, Ren Yan stood up nonchalantly, ready to leave when Dai Hui called out to him again.
"Wait a minute."
Dai Hui went to his desk, picked up a newspaper from it, paused for a moment, then walked back over.
"Take a look at this."
Ren Yan frowned slightly, puzzled, and took it, looking down.
He was very familiar with the male figure in the cover photo of the newspaper.
A vice governor of the province in charge of economic affairs.
The woman shaking hands with him, however, was quite young.
And furthermore.
He had seen her before.
Ren Yan seemed to realize something, suddenly looking up.
"I’m sorry."
Dai Hui looked at him quietly, his sudden apology seemingly out of the blue.
Ren Yan’s expression changed over and over, emotions entangled, as if he had an epiphany, yet found it hard to believe.
"...Why?"
Dai Hui shook his head.
Lost in thought, Ren Yan, who had been unaware of the mastermind behind recent events, clutched the newspaper, taking a while before he managed a bitter smile.
"Thank you."
Dai Hui remained silent.
Ren Yan turned around and left as if his soul had departed with him.
————
"Auntie, where did Dad go?"
"I don’t know, I didn’t dare to ask. He said he would be back for lunch, though."
The door opened.
Ren Yan walked in,
"Dad."
Seeing his daughter, Ren Yan quickly showed a kind smile.
"Let’s eat."
The Ren family didn’t have a housekeeper; Weng Chun took care of all the household chores, which was probably one of the reasons she was able to fit into the Ren family so quickly.
"Dad, where did you go?"
Weng Chun went to heat up the dishes.
"I went to meet Uncle Dai."
Ren Miao took her father’s briefcase and couldn’t help saying, "What did Uncle Dai say? Will he help?"
Ren Yan was not surprised, "It was your Aunt Weng who told you, wasn’t it?"
"Dad, don’t blame Aunt Weng; she’s just worried about you."
"I know."
Ren Yan nodded.
The father and daughter sat briefly in the living room.
"Dad, you haven’t answered me yet. What did Uncle Dai say?"
"I didn’t go to him for help today."
Ren Yan smiled, "And even if he wanted to help, he couldn’t."
"Dad, fifty million, that shouldn’t be a lot for Uncle Dai, right?"
Ren Miao ventured.
"It’s not about the money."
With that, a "thud" sound.
Ren Yan tossed something onto the coffee table.
Only then did Ren Miao notice that her father had actually brought back a newspaper.
"Dad, is someone deliberately targeting us?"
"You don’t need to worry about these things."
Ren Yan knew his daughter was very clever, and even though he had completely lost faith after learning the truth, he naturally couldn’t show this in front of her.
"You focus on your studies. Don’t worry, your living expenses won’t be shortchanged."
"Dad!"
"Dinner is ready."
Weng Chun’s voice came from the dining room.
"Let’s go, let’s eat."
Ren Yan stood up.
Bizarrely, he suddenly seemed relaxed; this mindset was strange, like a terminal patient who tends to suffer agonizingly before diagnosis, but after the diagnosis, becomes calm.
Because before the diagnosis, there is still hope in the heart.
With hope, there comes pain.
And those who are in despair often don’t have other emotions.
If it had not been for Dai Hui telling him, he wouldn’t even know now who was messing with him.
They weren’t even opponents in the same realm.
What is there to struggle against?
Ren Yan had resigned himself to his fate.
Ren Miao got up with her father and was about to head to the dining room when she inadvertently glanced at the newspaper.
Suddenly.
She paused.
Wait.
Ren Miao, filled with disbelief, turned around, bent down, and quickly picked up the newspaper, studying it very carefully.
She didn’t recognize the vice governor well-known among businessmen in the photo.
But the woman in the photo, she remembered her!
Shock.
Astonishment.
Disbelief.
"What’s wrong?"
Ren Yan turned around.
Ren Miao, as if struck by lightning, put down the newspaper, her expression dazed.
"...I know her."
