Chapter 382: 351 Myself and the Earth Altar
Visiting a university, the place you absolutely can’t miss, is undoubtedly its library.
East Sea University has two libraries, located on the south and north sides of the campus, respectively. The one in the south is newer; construction started the year Jiang Chen enrolled.
It’s said there’s nothing like new clothes, but when comparing the two libraries, which differ in age considerably, students still prefer the one in the north.
Jiang Chen felt the same.
"Tsk tsk, your school is really considerate, to have designed such a place especially for you all."
The old library.
The roof garden.
Fang Qing wore an envious expression.
"Not bad, I guess."
Jiang Chen was neither proud nor restless.
Fang Qing noticed there were several couples dating around them, lowered her voice and purposefully avoided getting too close to others. As they walked upon the cobblestone path, she teased, "You must have brought plenty of girls here for dates, right?"
"You make me sound like some kind of Casanova."
Jiang Chen seemed dissatisfied.
"I don’t believe that a big guy like you would know about this kind of place on his own."
Seeing a couple leave, Fang Qing quickly said, "Let’s go."
Jiang Chen couldn’t help but smile wryly.
This girl still acts like a kid.
Fang Qing got her wish and snagged the popular swing. She looked at Jiang Chen with satisfaction as she took a seat.
Jiang Chen shook his head.
Fang Qing didn’t insist. She tiptoed on the ground, swinging herself on the swing.
Blue sky, white clouds, the breeze was gentle, and the afternoon sunlight seemed to apply a warm-toned filter to the girl.
What a beautiful scene.
Jiang Chen took out his phone, aiming the camera at Fang Qing.
"What are you doing?"
"Taking a picture."
Fang Qing stopped the swing.
"What do you want a picture for?"
"To send to my girlfriend."
Fang Qing laughed and swore, "You’re sick, you know that?"
"She’s always wanted to see you."
While saying this, Jiang Chen indeed sent the photo to Li Shuru.
"If she wants to see me, she can just look directly."
"She’s not at school."
Jiang Chen put away his phone. "She went to an outside dance studio to teach children how to dance."
"Is she a dancer?"
Fang Qing teased, "You have quite the eye for talent."
Jiang Chen flashed a grin. "Well, of course. Considering we always played house together as kids, I couldn’t possibly end up with someone worse than you, could I?"
Fang Qing didn’t bother getting angry.
After all, they had always teased and demeaned each other since childhood; it had become a habit.
"I really don’t know how she ended up with someone like you."
"Began with looks, stayed for character, fell for talent,"
Jiang Chen said with an air of nonchalance.
"You’re shameless!"
Fang Qing couldn’t help but laugh and curse, noticed that a couple was watching them, and kindly got up, yielding the swing and moving elsewhere.
Jiang Chen noticed.
"When you were a kid, you’d go to any lengths to monopolize something you liked. How come you’ve become so considerate now?"
"I can’t always be like you, shameless as ever, right?"
Jiang Chen smiled wryly.
The two walked to the edge of the rooftop.
Fang Qing leaned on the parapet wall.
"Your school is prettier than I imagined."
"Still, it probably can’t compare to your Capital City University of Political Science and Law."
Fang Qing was noncommittal, turned her head and said, "Then why didn’t you just try a little harder? If you had just made that little extra effort, you could have been admitted too."
"Why not eat minced meat? Fang Qing, you have to understand that studying still requires a certain talent, not everyone has a high IQ like you, you know what my grades were in junior high. Getting into East Sea, I really gave it my all."
"I think it’s not that you couldn’t make it, you just didn’t want to try."
Fang Qing turned to look beyond the rooftop, "With your so-so junior high grades and still you managed to get into East Sea, you definitely could have made it to Capital City if you wanted to."
Jiang Chen laughed.
"Then tell me, why didn’t I want to try?"
"Because you were afraid to be at the same university as me."
Fang Qing smoothed her hair that the wind had tousled.
Jiang Chen’s smile broadened.
"Fang Qing, aren’t you being too narcissistic? Because of you, I should give up on my own future?"
"Who knows."
"You wanted to be at the same school as me that badly? After all these years, you still haven’t had enough of making fun of me?"
"Ah."
Fang Qing sighed, "Without you, university life indeed has been a bit lonely."
Jiang Chen didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry.
"Then why didn’t you give up on Capital City University of Political Science and Law and fill in East Sea as your preference?"
Indeed.
With Fang Qing’s scores, if she had chosen East Sea, this pair of childhood friends and bittersweet enemies would have definitely continued to be at the same school.
Instead of how it is now.
Each absent from the other’s youth.
Fang Qing looked at him.
Jiang Chen’s expression froze slightly.
He had never seen that look in her eyes before.
Fang Qing didn’t explain.
Coming down from the rooftop garden, Jiang Chen took Fang Qing around the inside of the library and, in the borrowing area, they ran into Bai Zheli.
"Jiang Chen."
Bai Zheli was also surprised to bump into Jiang Chen here.
"This is my roommate, Bai Zheli, the night guard of the library, well-read, nearly has read through all the books here," Jiang Chen said.
After hearing this introduction, Bai Zheli blushed and adjusted his black-framed glasses on the bridge of his nose.
He was obviously a different type from the young man they had lunch with at noon.
"This is my childhood friend, Fang Qing, visiting our school."
"Hello."
Fang Qing greeted first.
"Hello."
Bai Zheli hurried to respond.
After chatting for a while, Jiang Chen’s phone suddenly rang.
It was a message from Li Shuru, saying her class was over.
"Go pick her up,"
Fang Qing spoke up.
"What about you?"
"I’ll take a look at some books here with Xiao Bai (Little Bai)."
Probably only a girl like Fang Qing could manage to stay in the library.
