Chapter 342: 322 big brother’s style
"True to your reputation as our institute’s great talent, sharp and enlightening. Come on, Jiang Chen, let’s have a toast."
Talent is not just reflected in a diploma.
Jiang Chen clinked glasses with Fu Zili.
Wen Rong brought over a plate of grilled meat.
"Sister-in-law, stop busying yourself, come sit and eat with us."
Fu Zili called out.
"I’ve eaten already, you guys chat."
Wen Rong smiled with pursed lips, turned, and walked away after setting down the food.
"To have a wife like this, what more could a husband ask for?"
Fu Zili picked up a chicken foot and remarked,
"When are you planning to get married?"
Jiang Chen looked towards his childhood friend, who used to walk arm in arm with him.
"The house I bought will probably not be handed over until the end of next year. I have to settle the house issue before considering marriage."
Tie Jun picked up his glass.
Jiang Chen joined him for a sip.
Once upon a time, Tie Jun too was a spirited young man, always boasting about achieving great things when he grew up, declaring that his destiny was in his own hands, not fate’s. But now...
Life always manages to grind down people’s sharp edges.
"When you get married, you must let me know, okay?"
Fang Qing said with a smile.
"Qing Gege, absolutely. Even if I don’t invite Jiang Chen, I will definitely notify you."
Having said this, Tie Jun took the opportunity to ask, "The university you’re at must be full of talented young men, Qing Gege, have you dated anyone? Back when we were studying, we three brothers went through a lot to protect you. If you’ve got someone now, you have to bring him over for us to vet. If he’s not up to par, we won’t approve."
Hong Xiaoyu, who knew their stories from the past, smiled knowingly, quietly eating the grilled fish with his chopsticks.
"It’s because you guys are too outstanding, setting my standards too high. Now, I find every guy I meet doesn’t measure up,"
Fang Qing sighed, responding to Tie Jun’s question with humor and wit, eliciting laughter from the iron trio of their youth.
"If I can’t find someone in the future, you three will have to take responsibility."
Tie Jun’s dark face beamed with a thick smile not seen for many years, just about to say something, but for some reason, he held back.
Instead, Fu Zili spoke up.
"Fang Qing, you blame me and Tie Jun, but it’s not our fault. If you’re looking for someone to take responsibility, it has to be Jiang Chen. Back then, in the yard, at school, didn’t everyone see you two as a pair?"
Fang Qing glanced at Jiang Chen with a smirk, not engaging in the conversation.
"Please, spare me. Back then, I was never serious. If it weren’t for you two, I don’t know how many beatings I would have endured,"
Jiang Chen said, shaking his head while smiling.
Hearing Fu Zili say this, Tie Jun also let go of his worries and teased, "You don’t know your blessings. Back then, Qing Gege was either bringing you food or drinks. Who wouldn’t be envious of you?"
As childhood friends, Fu Zili knew the workings of Fang Qing’s heart, but Tie Jun understood that although Fu Zili was now thriving in Sha City, he was simply not from the same world as Fang Qing.
Before, he had wondered whether Fu Zili would always carry a torch for Fang Qing, but now it seemed that Fu Zili was a very rational and sober person.
Since Fu Zili had let go of those youthful sentiments, from his standpoint, he truly hoped that Jiang Chen and Fang Qing could come together.
Childhood sweethearts, innocent of the ways of the world.
If they truly came together, it would indeed be a wonderful story.
Moreover, Jiang Chen and Fu Zili were different; both were graduates from prestigious universities, shared similar values, and possessed ample cultural literacy. From every aspect, they were quite a match.
"She wasn’t just giving me food and drinks, she was drugging me."
Jiang Chen didn’t explicitly say it yesterday at East Sea Fresh because there were elders present, and speaking out might have made things awkward. But now, there was no need for such considerations.
Jiang Chen was about to say he already had a girlfriend, but suddenly, noises erupted from within the restaurant.
His words were interrupted as he turned to look, only to see that Fu Zili’s two "employees" at a table had apparently started arguing with the table next to them.
"Damn it, dressed so provocatively, if she’s not a prostitute, what is she? I cursed her, so what?"
A man in his thirties stood up with an intimidating aura, his shining bald head adding a fierce edge to his demeanor.
The six or seven men at his table jumped to their feet, clearly not the type to reason with.
It seemed the discussion over Fu Zili’s employees had been overheard by three other patrons at their table, leading to a verbal clash.
Wen Rong stood helplessly not far away, unsure of how to handle the situation.
"You guys stay seated."
Tie Jun stood up, and as he stepped forward, his limp became noticeable.
"Gentlemen, calm down, it’s just a small matter..."
The once unruly Tie Jun, who would not back down even with a bruised face, tried to appease with a smile. Little did he know, the bald man completely ignored him and rudely pushed him aside.
"Get out of the way."
Unable to move quickly because of his leg, Tie Jun fell to the ground.
"Junzi!"
Wen Rong hurried over to help him up.
Fang Qing frowned.
Although there were several other tables of customers in the restaurant, none dared to intercede, as the bald group clearly lacked any decency. Everyone fell silent, not daring to make a peep.
"Tonight, we’re taking these two beauties!"
The bald man, surrounded by his posse, declared as if he owned the world.
The two young girls were pale with fright.
"Watch your language!"
The forty-something-year-old man accompanying the girls mustered his courage and stood up, not wanting to appear weaker. However, he was no match for the brutality of the other side.
Before he could even stand firm, one of the bald man’s cronies rushed over and, without a word, slammed the man’s head into the barbecue on the table.
"Bang!"
Dishes scattered.
"Ahhhh!!!"
The two girls screamed in terror.
"Ungrateful bastards, if you know what’s good for you, get lost!"
The bald man was utterly lawless, as though he was used to bullying his way through Sha City without ever hitting a snag.
Maybe he thought he was the snag.
The other two clients were completely shaken, although they didn’t run, their faces were full of panic, trembling with fear, and they dared not say another word.
Over by the bald man, two more guys walked over and forcefully grabbed the two girls.
"Behave! Do you believe I’ll smack you?"
Upon seeing this, Hong Xiaoyu couldn’t help but clench his fists in righteous indignation.
"Friend, if you need women, there are plenty of places for that. To snatch them in public is a bit too much, don’t you think?"
Fu Zili walked over, his usually slick face now devoid of any smile.
The bald man turned his head and gave a cold glance.
"What? You want to meddle?"
Fu Zili glanced at Tie Jun who was being helped up, a trace of shadow flashing in his eyes, then looked towards the two girls who were caught.
"Mr. Fu..."
"These two are my people, wouldn’t you say it’s my business to get involved?"
"Your people?"
The bald man seemed to sense something and sized him up from head to toe.
"Let them go, and apologize to the boss and this gentleman, then we can drop the matter."
Listening to Fu Zili’s tone, the bald man judged that the other party must have some clout, but with so many of his own people around, there was no way he would back down easily.
"You’re fucking kidding me, I, Xiong San, am not unreasonable. I’ll take these chicks, and I’ll return them to you tomorrow."
He threw out his name, no doubt trying to intimidate Fu Zili, but Fu Zili remained unmoved.
He had never even heard of Xiong San.
Where there is light, darkness inevitably exists.
In every place, there’s always the dregs like these.
"Friend, what you’re doing, it’s not according to the rules."
"Rules? What I, Xiong San, say is the rule."
The bald man sneered coldly.
"You’d better look at how many brothers I’ve got here."
"It’s about having more people, is it?"
No sooner had Fu Zili spoken than several vans screeched to a stop at the entrance of Junzi Barbecue.
Nearly twenty tough guys stormed into the shop, looking menacing, each with a long bag in their hand, what it contained was obvious without being stated.
"Mr. Fu."
The scene, indeed, was quite spectacular.
The color drained from the face of the bald man.
The rules of society had long changed, with capital now reigning supreme.
Thugs like these were no match for a "businessman" like Fu Zili.
"Brother Zili, you’re awesome."
Hong Xiaoyu wore an admiring expression.
Jiang Chen let out a sigh of relief, grateful that Sha City was small enough for Fu Zili’s people to arrive so promptly.
Fu Zili, without saying a word, stared at the bald man,
who shifted colors, and after gnashing his teeth, signalled his cronies to release the captives.
Once freed, the two girls immediately ran behind Fu Zili.
"Let’s go!"
The bald man prepared to lead his people out.
"After hitting someone and disrupting the business, you think to just walk away? Friend, that’s not how it works, right?"
"What else do you want?"
"Compensation."
Immediately, a man behind the bald man took out his wallet, withdrew a few bills, and placed them on the table.
"Is that enough?"
"Not enough."
"How much do you want?"
The bald man was holding back his anger.
"Ten thousand."
Upon hearing this, the bald man’s anger was about to boil over, but he restrained himself, knowing that the twenty or so men opposite were staring him down.
And as someone from the fringes of society, he was well aware of what those bags contained.
"We don’t carry that much cash."
"Scan the code."
Fu Zili turned his head, "Junzi."
Tie Jun came over and spoke softly, "Maybe we should just let it go."
"We can’t let it go."
Fu Zili’s face was expressionless as he directed Tie Jun to show the bald man the payment code, forcing him to cough up ten thousand.
"My name is Fu Zili, and if you don’t know me, feel free to ask around. No offense, but if you feel wronged, you are welcome to come looking for me. However, if you cause a scene in this restaurant again, I assure you, you won’t be interested in women for the rest of your life."
Faced with such a brazen threat, the once haughty bald man didn’t dare make a single peep, his face turned ashen as he dejectedly led his people away from the barbecue shop.
Fu Zili then went on to soothe the assaulted clients, handling everything before he returned to his seat along with Tie Jun.
"You’ve got the style of the big brother from back in the day."
Jiang Chen said with a smile.
"Why do such people still exist nowadays?"
Hong Xiaoyu knew that when he was a child, indeed, public safety was not that great, but it was unexpected that there were still people so brazen these days.
Fu Zili sat down.
"Where are there no such social elements? So, the only way to not be bullied, is to be crueler and more ruthless than them."
"Brother, are there people like that in East Sea too?"
Hong Xiaoyu turned his head.
Jiang Chen was momentarily taken aback, then involuntarily recalled the face of a woman.
