Chapter 225: 223 the big sucker
Paramela drove out of the eastern university gate.
Zheng Jingjing, who was sitting in the backseat with Xu Siyi and Guo Ran, kept making eyes at Li Shuru in the front passenger seat.
Luckily, all the girls were quite slim, so the three of them sitting in the back didn’t feel too crowded.
Jiang Chen was driving.
Li Shuru noticed her close friend’s suggestive looks and waited until Paramela merged into traffic before bringing up, "I heard Luo Peng recently started an angel investment club?"
"Oh, you all know about it?"
Jiang Chen nodded.
He wasn’t joking at all.
In the dorm, after discussing with Luo Peng, they took immediate action. He put up the money, and Luo Peng contributed effort. Like charitable ambassadors, or more like generous benefactors, anyone with an entrepreneurial idea could apply. Several projects had already been set, and more and more people were getting involved.
Prestigious universities certainly don’t lack ambitious youths driven by their own will; what they need is just the initial funding.
"It must have been your idea, right?" Li Shuru asked.
The angel investment club was becoming quite famous around the school, with many people discussing it. Everybody saw Luo Peng as the main person in charge, but Li Shuru guessed who was the real backer.
Although Luo Peng came from a well-off family, he certainly didn’t have the financial capacity for such an initiative. It could only be this guy supporting from behind.
"How could you call it ’ordering’?" Jiang Chen replied with a laugh while driving, "You make it sound like we are up to no good. ’When poor, one should take care of oneself; when able, one should take care of the whole world.’ We’re just helping our ambitious alumni to achieve their dreams—that’s all."
"Jiang Chen, I think you two are quite the clever pair, investing in whatever projects you come across," Zheng Jingjing couldn’t help but interject.
Jiang Chen glanced upward at the rearview mirror.
Girls truly have a knack for noticing subtleties. Seeing that his "exposure" hadn’t made him arrogant, their wariness towards him gradually diminished.
"Is there a problem?"
"Of course there’s a problem," Zheng Jingjing quickly voiced her opinion, "Look at what you guys are investing in—an online girlfriend service? That’s so tacky. And an online memorial hall? Please, if you really have money to burn, you might as well give it to me. I wouldn’t mind."
"I’m not your boyfriend, why would I give you money?" Jiang Chen teased.
"Ah Shuru, look at him!" Zheng Jingjing quickly complained, "He’s flirting with me right in front of you!"
Li Shuru just smiled without a word and gave Jiang Chen a look.
Jiang Chen cleared his throat.
"Of course, I can’t just give you money, but if you have any dreams, maybe you could share them with me. If they are feasible, I might be able to lend a hand."
He was starting to sound like a dream mentor.
"We want to start a dance training studio," Zheng Jingjing quickly said, as if she’d been waiting just for him to say that.
So it seemed she had come prepared.
"You’re thinking about starting a business in your junior year?"
"There’s no right or wrong time for this sort of thing. Aren’t there lots of freshman consulting with your ’sucker’s club’?"
’Sucker’s club.’
What a fitting description.
But beauty, you’re looking to me for an investment. Isn’t being so blunt a bit inappropriate?
However, Jiang Chen, showing the grace of a senior, didn’t take it to heart.
"Is it just the three of you?"
Guo Ran and Xu Siyi had remained silent, clearly pushing Zheng Jingjing to be their spokesperson.
"And Shu Rui!"
Zheng Jingjing was smart too; worried the three of them alone wouldn’t carry much weight, she roped in Li Shuru.
Jiang Chen remained silent, pondering.
"Jiang Chen, we’re serious. We’ve thought it through. We can start teaching kids first and then gradually expand. Parents nowadays value their children’s talent development highly. It’s much more reliable than the projects you’ve invested in."
Clearly,
they had discussed it amongst themselves, not coming up with the idea on a whim.
Jiang Chen’s gaze instinctively turned to Li Shuru.
Li Shuru looked back at him but remained silent.
"How much money do you need?"
"Eight hundred thousand."
Zheng Jingjing quickly stated a figure, apparently worried Jiang Chen might think they were trying to scam him, then hastened to explain: "First we need to rent a space, and it can’t be too small. We’ve done some research—many places require a year’s lease. Plus, we need to pay for renovations and buy some equipment..."
Eight hundred thousand.
It wasn’t a vast sum.
The reason Jiang Chen had Luo Peng set up the angel investment club was precisely for "money laundering."
Just like many tycoons investing in movies.
What they really care about isn’t whether the film will make a profit or not.
Media often exposes the enormous amounts stars receive for film roles.
But in reality, there’s a lot of exaggeration involved.
Perhaps there are truly outstanding stars with guaranteed viewership worth such prices, but for the most part, it’s just a chorus sung in coordination with the investors.
Investors need to inflate the stars’ fees to achieve some undisclosed purpose, while the stars need high salaries to boost their standing and add lustre to their image. Both parties essentially hit it off, each seeking their own benefit.
In fact, many seemingly inexplicable phenomena boil down to this logic.
Take for example, those obnoxious game ads with shoddy production values that no kid would play. Yet why do they pay celebrities a fortune to endorse them?
Could it really be in the hope that the few attracted gamers will bring in profits?
Capitalists are not that foolish.
Coming back to Zheng Jingjing’s self-identification as a sucker—she wasn’t wrong. College students, untouched by the trials of real-world experience, tend to be overly idealistic, with limited perspectives and abilities. Jiang Chen was well aware that the chances of success for the projects he invested in were slim to none. But did it matter?
