Chapter 138: 138 Thirty years of beings as cattle and horses
The ignorant have no fear, a description that fits Jiang Chen to a T.
Whenever someone runs into Sun Xiyu, don’t they all respectfully refer to him as Young Master Sun?
Sun Watermelon.
Thinking of Jiang Chen’s slip of the tongue earlier, Li Shuru couldn’t help but want to laugh.
If Sun Xiyu heard that, even with his good temperament, he would probably blow his top, right?
"By the way, I ran into someone else just now."
The two of them left the administration building and walked toward the interior of the school.
"Who?"
Jiang Chen asked casually, as if the appearance of a powerful rival like Sun Xiyu didn’t bring him the slightest sense of crisis.
After all, the one thing he was not lacking nowadays was probably money.
Even if someone who owned a bank showed up, he wouldn’t be afraid in the least.
"Ai Qian."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Chen’s face showed a flicker of emotion.
"When?"
"It was shortly after I met Sun Xiyu. She happened to see us, and then your ex-girlfriend, in your defense, thought there was something fishy about Sun Xiyu’s and my relationship and gave me a solid scolding."
Jiang Chen was caught between laughter and tears and didn’t quite know what to say. He moved his lips and offered a consoling word, "Don’t take it to heart."
"It’s clear that she still cares about you," Li Shuru said softly.
Jiang Chen coughed lightly and sensibly did not follow up.
Li Shuru touched on the subject just enough and didn’t linger over Ai Qian. She brought the conversation back around.
"I’ve known Sun Xiyu for a while, and he is indeed different from other wealthy heirs; he’s not a bad person, but I can’t promise he won’t make trouble for you. You should still be careful."
"Judging by what you’re saying, should I hire a couple of bodyguards?"
Jiang Chen teased.
"I’m being serious," Li Shuru said earnestly, "He already knows about you."
"So what if he knows? We haven’t done anything shady. Do we need to skulk around?"
"That’s not what I meant."
"I know that’s not what you meant," Jiang Chen smiled. "If war comes, we’ll fight; if floods come, we’ll shore up. I’ve already risked my life for you; am I supposed to be afraid of some rich kid?"
Li Shuru couldn’t help but recall that harrowing scene on the Dragon Gate plank walkway.
Sun Xiyu’s words had sounded nice, but had he been in Jiang Chen’s place, could he have been so fearless, so recklessly brave?
Li Shuru had no answer.
No answer.
Sometimes that in itself is an answer.
"Hmm, you do seem pretty manly at times like this," she teased, tilting her head to look at Jiang Chen.
"What a joke," Jiang Chen smirked back meaningfully at Li Shuru. "Shouldn’t you be well aware of whether I’m a man or not?"
The unabashed Li Shuru, having shared a bed with him, responded seriously, "I really don’t know."
Jiang Chen was instantly stumped, his grand bravado fizzling out.
"Pfft..."
Li Shuru couldn’t hold back any longer, covering her mouth and giggling uncontrollably.
"Don’t get cocky. Give me another chance, and I’ll make sure you understand just how capable I am," Jiang Chen threatened half-heartedly.
"Scared? Not in the slightest," Li Shuru shot back, her rosy cheeks contrasting with her challenging words.
Jiang Chen moved his lips, as if at a loss for words or perhaps lacking in confidence, and stopped making threats, continuing forward in silence.
With a lithe grace, Li Shuru followed behind him.
Back at the college, the eagerly waiting Zheng Jingjing and the others immediately surrounded her.
"What did Sun Xiyu want with you?"
"Is he trying to get back together with you?"
Zheng Jingjing bombarded her with questions.
"What do you mean get back together? Shu Rui has never been with him," Guo Ran corrected.
"Oh, right, so does he want to pursue you again?"
Zheng Jingjing gazed at Li Shuru with eyes full of eagerness, her curiosity peaked to the extreme.
Li Shuru had anticipated such a scenario, so she denied it, "He just happened to pass by and came to see me on the way."
"Shuru, do you think we’re fools? I heard that his magnificent ride has been parked at the entrance of the academy for over an hour now. He was clearly waiting for you."
Zheng Jingjing couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
"Come clean, leniency for the confessor, severity for the resistor."
"If you don’t believe me, there’s nothing I can do."
Li Shuru clearly didn’t want to elaborate.
"Shuru, what are you thinking? If Sun Xiyu really wants to pursue you again, that’d really be a tough spot to be in."
Guo Ran didn’t care whether she admitted it or not since the truth was obvious; there was no need for argument.
"Tough in what way?"
Zheng Jingjing asked subconsciously.
"Think about it. Shuru has Jiang Chen now, and Sun Xiyu comes back and throws a wrench in the works. Choosing between the two is not easy since both have their merits."
"Jiang Chen can’t hold a candle to Sun Xiyu."
Zheng Jingjing mumbled, though she didn’t entirely sway her best friend into Sun Xiyu’s arms without considering past grievances; surprisingly, she remained neutral.
"Shuru, who do you think is better?"
Everyone knew Sun Xiyu was one in ten thousand, a real catch.
As for Jiang Chen...
His only advantage might just be that he once saved Shuru’s life.
"The two of them are incomparable."
Li Shuru threw out this ambiguous statement and then, regardless of how her roommates continued to question her, she didn’t explain any further.
"Si Yi, what does Shuru mean by that?"
Zheng Jingjing turned to Xu Siyi, who had been quiet.
"Isn’t it obvious? Shuru is saying that Sun Xiyu is no match for Jiang Chen."
After saying this, Xu Siyi also walked away.
Zheng Jingjing and Guo Ran looked at each other.
"Ten thousand bucks, I’ve transferred it to your WeChat."
After escorting Li Shuru back to the Arts Institute, Jiang Chen returned to his dorm room.
Luo Peng was playing Ranked with Li Shao; the game was still the same old "Orphaned Survivor."
Jiang Chen took a special look at his record, which was unusually positive, then glanced over at Li Shao’s side.
Wow.
18—5
No wonder.
Turns out they had such a god-tier "jungle dad" carrying the game.
"Holy crap, did you win the lottery?"
After a resounding victory on enemy territory, Luo Peng picked up his phone only to see the notification of a ten thousand yuan transfer, his face full of surprise.
"Ruan Guang’s compensation has been paid."
Jiang Chen explained.
Luo Peng suddenly realized, then asked, "You didn’t give the money back to Li Shuru?"
"I did, but she refused."
Luo Peng’s face twitched.
That was over four hundred thousand yuan.
To refuse it just like that?
Seeing as the game was already won, he simply went AFK at the fountain in-game, contemplating with deep emotion, "They say it takes thirty years to turn beings into cattle and horses, but you’ve only had twenty years. Jiang Chen, it looks like your days of hardship are over."
In the past, Jiang Chen was undeniably the most miserable one in the dorm, but now, the tables had turned, much to everyone else’s envy.
"I ought to apologize to Li Shuru."
With his impressive performance leading his team to destroy the enemy’s crystal, Li Shao put down the mouse, admitting, "I was biased against her before."
"Who wasn’t?"
Luo Peng gave a bitter smile.
He, too, had never imagined that Li Shuru could be such a girl.
"What about you? How are things going with Luo Li’er?"
Li Shao asked with a smile.
"Don’t even mention it."
Luo Peng heaved a heavy sigh.
"I intended to offer my heart to the bright moon, but alas, the bright moon illuminates the ditch."
