Chapter 1251: Long live friendship 865
"Where do you all live? I’ll give you a ride home."
So it must be said, Jiang Chen isn’t ungenerous—it’s just that he biked to the gathering that day, not even a back seat on his ride, so there was no way to help out.
The city lights were just coming on.
The streets bustled with endless streams of cars.
"Fenglu Courtyard."
Xie Wendong blurted out without hesitation.
He had only been working for a short time and definitely couldn’t afford to buy a place yet, so he was renting. Though he had "no great ambitions," he still had some vanity. Many of his colleagues from the unit rented at Fenglu Courtyard, so seeing him roll up in a Cullinan would at least give him a bit of face.
In reality, a luxury car like the Cullinan shouldn’t appear in ordinary people’s day-to-day lives. He had to consider—this might be the only chance he’d ever have in his lifetime.
"Get in."
The last time he bumped into him near Yangkou Park suggested that Xie Wendong must live nearby.
"Why make it so complicated? Jiang Chen, you should drop Yu Fei off instead," Ouyang Qing suggested.
Complicated?
What’s complicated about it?
They weren’t in a rush, after all.
Xie Wendong had been about to speak, but his arm was pinched, and he froze in confusion. Turning instinctively, he caught Ouyang Qing’s meaningful look and suddenly understood.
"Yeah, yeah, you don’t need to drop us off. Just make sure Yu Fei gets home safe."
"And you two?"
"He’ll take me back," Ouyang Qing said, pulling Xie Wendong’s sleeve.
Xie Wendong nodded like a bobblehead.
What else could be said under the circumstances?
Jiang Chen glanced at them both, then smiled and nodded. "Alright, keep in touch."
"Go on, get in the car," Ouyang Qing prompted the distracted Wu Yufei.
"Be safe."
The two waved, smiling, watching as the Cullinan reversed out of its space, passed them by, and gradually disappeared into the distance.
"Old Discipline Inspector, where do you live?"
Xie Wendong withdrew his gaze.
"What, you’re seriously planning to see me home?" Ouyang Qing asked, surprised.
"Of course! What if something happens to you? How would I explain that to Jiang Chen and Wu Yufei?"
Ouyang Qing didn’t banter with him further. "Alright then, let’s go."
The two flagged down a taxi at the roadside.
"Sikoumen."
When Ouyang Qing told the driver the destination, Xie Wendong froze. "That far?"
They were in Yangkou now, but Sikoumen was in Rongchang District—a trip that crossed the river, not a trivial bit of trouble. Setting aside the fare, it would take at least a couple of hours roundtrip.
"Is there a problem?"
"No, no problem."
The taxi had already started moving; it was too late to back out now.
"How about dropping me off first?"
Ouyang Qing was, at least, pretty reasonable.
But as a man, he couldn’t very well go back on something he’d personally agreed to.
"No need. I’ve never escorted a female friend home before. Thanks for giving me the chance, Old Discipline Inspector."
"Look at you," Ouyang Qing said, glancing sideways.
"Do you think Jiang Chen was serious about what he said at dinner?"
Xie Wendong lowered his voice, asking earnestly.
"What else? You think he was joking with us?"
"..."
Xie Wendong took a deep breath and couldn’t help but say, "Wu Yufei really hit unexpected fortune this time. She’s made it big."
"You’re jealous?"
"Even if Jiang Chen only gives her a portion of the orders, it should be enough to keep her set for life. If it were me, I’d be willing to jump off a building too, maybe even a few more times."
Xie Wendong spoke with heartfelt emotion, stating the truth plainly.
"Even if you jumped, it wouldn’t help. You’re not a woman."
Ouyang Qing cut through the fantasy with ruthless, pinpoint accuracy.
Xie Wendong was left speechless.
"Do you think the two of them..."
Ouyang Qing trailed off, with a look that invited speculation.
Xie Wendong met her gaze and replied crisply, "Didn’t you hear Jiang Chen say he already has a girlfriend?"
Ouyang Qing hesitated but didn’t press further, merely letting out a soft sigh.
"Sigh."
Xie Wendong sighed too.
"Why are you sighing?" Ouyang Qing asked, puzzled.
"Headache."
Compared to Sikoumen, Wu Yufei’s place was even farther—single-trip, it would take at least an hour.
But Jiang Chen had no complaints. While driving, he said, "If you want to listen to music, feel free to play some."
Perhaps to ease the slightly awkward atmosphere, Wu Yufei took out her phone and connected to the Bluetooth.
"Actually, I’m afraid of you, you always overpraise me
Actually, I’m more afraid you’ll only admire my character
No one but me can inspire your faith through choice words
No one asks if I’m content playing this great selfless role..."
"The sound system in a luxury car is definitely next level." She smiled.
Jiang Chen glanced at her, "In your line of work, you’ve probably been in plenty of nice cars, no?"
"Quite a few, but the priciest was over a million. This one sets a new record, and I probably won’t have the chance to top it again."
"If you had this much drive at work, you wouldn’t only have one order to your name."
Jiang Chen teased.
Wu Yufei reclined comfortably in the leather seat, fully savoring the first-class luxury.
"You all say that the key to sales is connections, not ambition."
She looked straight ahead, gazing out at the windshield, her voice soft, almost as if to herself.
"They say hard work can’t change fate, but I never believed that before."
"Hard work can change fate—whether or not you’ve been to college, and then going to college versus going to a prestigious one, these differences do matter."
Wu Yufei smiled faintly, offering no argument. "Have you heard this phrase? ’If hard work could make you rich, the world’s richest person would be a donkey.’"
Jiang Chen smiled lightly.
"You should also know that those who understand heaven’s secrets are often in danger."
A Cullinan worth several million stood out on the streets of River City, a city just stepping into the ranks of China’s ’new first-tier’ metropolises.
