I Forged the Myth of the Ancient Overlords -
Chapter 924 - 924 923. Sickly cute
Chapter 924: 923. Sickly cute Chapter 924: 923. Sickly cute Lu Ban subconsciously reached to answer the phone.
But just as his finger touched the answer button, a realization suddenly struck him.
His phone had lost signal long ago, so how could he receive calls?
He looked at the signal bar at the top of his phone—clearly displaying a cross.
Thus, the nature of this call was highly questionable.
The cheerful default ringtone echoed eerily through the fog, the contrast creating a disturbingly twisted sensation. Lu Ban waited a few seconds, the phone still ringing, and then he pressed the call button.
Bringing the phone to his ear, Lu Ban heard a voice on the other end.
“Is this Lu Ban?”
Amber’s voice was soft, like a ray of sunlight in the dense fog.
“It’s me.”
Lu Ban responded, clearly hearing the breath from the other side, very real.
“Where are you? It’s gone dark over here, seems like a power outage.”
Amber’s voice revealed her anxiety, like a little cat trapped in a dilemma.
“Don’t worry.”
Lu Ban reassured her, looking around, the fog appeared to shift slightly due to a light breeze, making the flickering lights in the distance clearer.
He saw the hotel sign, seemingly within arm’s reach, almost tangible.
“When will you come back? I’m a bit scared.”
Amber’s voice trembled slightly, evoking sympathy.
“Don’t worry.”
Lu Ban replied calmly.
“Why are you being so cold? Are you going to abandon us?”
Amber suddenly said, her voice carrying a hint of urgency and panic.
“Please, don’t abandon us, don’t leave, okay?”
Her plea was tinged with fretfulness and a touch of madness.
“I know now, you’ve changed, you don’t want to come back, you never wanted to be with us from the start!”
Abruptly, Amber’s voice took on a sickly and seductive tone.
“Don’t panic, I know you’re anxious, but just try not to panic.”
Lu Ban spoke while walking towards the hotel, realizing he had arrived at the hotel’s entrance.
“What happened to you? You weren’t like this before. Have you found someone else? Who is she?”
Amber’s voice distorted completely, hysterical, like a demented maniac.
Lu Ban pulled the phone away, looking at the call interface, where a ferocious face was gradually appearing.
It was Amber’s face, twisted and horrific from jealousy and anger.
It looked as if it would burst out the next second, changing within Lu Ban’s phone as if trying to crawl out.
Lu Ban hung up the call.
His finger on the screen felt damp.
He lifted his finger to find a bloodstain.
The blood kept pouring out from the screen, along with some of Amber’s incoherent muttering, drenching Lu Ban’s hand and dripping down his arm.
Lu Ban closed his eyes, then opened them again—the blood was still there, not an illusion.
He pushed open the door and entered the hotel, placing the phone on the front desk.
Blood continued to flow from the phone, ceaselessly— a sight truly horrifying.
He looked around; the hotel was old, decaying, and very damp. Whether it was the wooden tables, the leather sofas, or the landline phones, and the clock hanging on the wall, they all had an abandoned, fished-out-of-the-water feel to them.
Lu Ban glanced inside the hotel—a four-story building on The Island, tall by local standards, with only stairs, no elevator.
Fortunately, there wasn’t a pair of twins at the staircase saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
He looked at the phone that continued to ooze blood and thought this call was one he could do without.
Lu Ban searched a bit and found some accommodation records on the front desk.
The town was comparatively backward, and computers had not yet become widespread, so the lodging records were all handwritten.
Lu Ban turned to the first page and found that these were records from the 1960s. It seemed that it was only since then that the tourism industry on the Island had gradually developed to where it was now.
The clumsy English recorded the tourists’ names and simple information. Anyway, Lu Ban couldn’t understand much of it, so he went straight to the end.
However, he found that the records only went up to ten years ago.
“How strange, could they have switched to a new book?” he wondered.
Lu Ban casually flipped through and noticed there were still many blank pages after the records, so there was no need for a replacement.
After all, the same book had been used for decades, and given the amount of use, it wouldn’t make sense to replace it now.
There were no other written records on the desk, so Lu Ban went back to revisit the final entry.
This time, he examined the most recent records more carefully.
He soon noticed some familiar names.
Changyu Zou and Shuzhi Sun.
Zou Changyu and Sun Shuzhi were the business couple who had invited them to the Island.
They were the last guests to check in.
Calculating the dates, Lu Ban realized that their time of stay was almost exactly when his own child was murdered.
Their child, the victim, was killed while this couple happened to be outdoors, not staying at home. Now it seemed they had come here.
“What happened?”
Lu Ban had always found the couple suspicious, and now the Island itself seemed off. He had reason to suspect that they were definitely connected to the Jade Pendant.
Now with the lodging records surfacing, Lu Ban guessed they must have hidden something on the Island.
“I wonder where Shia and Old Cui are?”
Lu Ban intended to take photos with his phone for records, but considering the phone that was still issuing blood, he had to give up.
Fortunately, his memory was unbeatable; he could perfectly recreate all the details. Therefore, he meticulously memorized this record book, just in case.
He came to the doorway next to the front desk, which presumably led to the owner’s room.
Pushing open the door, a musty odor hit him, like a sour mop, which would certainly upset his stomach if he took a deep breath.
After a search, he found no text or pictorial information.
Leaving the room, he decided to check the second floor.
His shoes creaked on the stairs as if they might break and fall at any moment.
Arriving on the second floor, all the room doors were tightly shut.
Lu Ban twisted a doorknob and found the door unlocked. He pushed it open to find a room that was spacious enough, but filled with the smell of damp and decay, and the blankets were dotted with mold.
He stepped out and approached a second door.
It was then that Lu Ban heard a noise from a room nearby.
Thud—
It was like the sound of something hitting the floor, a sound he was all too familiar with, just like in the villa’s hallway.
He immediately softened his footsteps as he approached the source of the noise.
Listening carefully beyond the mumblings, there were subtle sounds.
Like a human heartbeat, breathing, the faint signs of life.
Lu Ban was certain that behind this door, something was present.
He gently placed his hand on the doorknob.
Just then, all the sounds disappeared.
Lu Ban felt that the entity behind the door had abruptly ceased all activities.
Breathing and heartbeat were all suspended.
But a strong intuition told Lu Ban that there definitely was something behind it.
He held his breath.
The next moment, Lu Ban pushed the door open.
