I Forged the Myth of the Ancient Overlords
Chapter 865 - 865 864. What a coincidence

Chapter 865: 864. What a coincidence! Chapter 865: 864. What a coincidence! Night.

Due to the absence of city lights and their associated light pollution, the starry sky in the desert seemed even more dazzling, forming a spectacular and colorful array of constellations completely different from those on Earth.

Lu Ban saw that there were some vacant places among the stars.

From the perspective of Earth, these stars were definitely not on the same plane, as they were lights from stars at various distances. Thus, when one looked up at the night sky from Earth, they would see stars scattered all over with hardly any gaps, offering a glimpse into the dense Sea of Stars of the Milky Way.

But in the Wasteland’s sky, there were noticeably empty areas where not a single star shone, making it look very stark.

This situation could easily lead one to think of some rather unsuitable circumstances.

For example, the stars in that region, regardless of distance, might have been extinguished by some overwhelming power.

Or there existed an entity so vast that the human mind couldn’t grasp it, and it blocked out the starlight coming from that direction.

Or perhaps, this starry sky was actually a falsehood, and those empty spaces were merely glitches in the System.

The lights gradually went out. There were two kinds of lights used in the Wasteland: the cities’ pathways were lit by a special kind of insect, similar to fireflies, that emitted light but did not fly. As long as they were kept in jars, they would illuminate, and the city’s administrators would feed them daily to ensure their survival.

In the Wasteland, at least in Utopia, glass had been around for quite a while; sand and soil, their raw materials, being the most abundant resources here, resulted in glass that, although not excellent in quality, was at least transparent when manufactured via high-temperature melting and cooling.

For ordinary households, a different kind of insect secretion was used, which could be ignited and would burn quietly all night long.

Life in the Wasteland had become inseparable from insects.

“This is the predicament currently faced by the Wasteland,” Lu Ban said as he looked at the insect lamp lit inside the house.

“Neither the Wild Guard nor the Yellow Sand Brotherhood realizes the most fundamental issue: the Wasteland’s resources are now almost entirely dependent on the insect population.”

Be it food, daily necessities, fuel, or clothing, all were derived from insects.

People had survived to this day by relying on insects and their various by-products.

Lu Ban noticed that although there were oases and water sources in the city, there was almost no agriculture. Of course, the oases weren’t extensive enough for large-scale farming anyway, but one could infer that the people of Utopia probably didn’t know how to farm.

The barren natural conditions had turned the inhabitants of Utopia into Nomadic Tribes, who had discovered various uses for insects, hence their current lifestyle.

After all, compared to agricultural crops that were difficult to grow and which required competing for water with people, the seemingly inexhaustible supply of insects, which could be eaten just by removing the head, tasting like crispy chicken, was far more convenient.

But the residents of Utopia hadn’t considered that there might come a day when the insects would be depleted.

Now, with the connection to the Ancient Overlord lost, the Wasteland’s insects would no longer increase.

Eat one, lose one.

The entire ecosystem related to insects would collapse completely, and with the arrival of the impending Torrential Rain, the environment of the whole world would undergo a drastic change. If the ability to adapt to the forthcoming changes were not developed, maintaining the status quo would lead only to destruction.

Thinking this far, Lu Ban had also gained a rather intuitive understanding of Utopia’s “Rules”.

Most of Utopia’s rules were aimed at a single goal: to preserve the existence of Utopia. And to maintain the existence of this city, order was necessary.

Chaos and excessive freedom would breed decadence, while absolute justice could ensure the normal functioning of Utopia. That’s why Utopia had chosen the path of righteousness.

But its rules could not foresee the future or react in time to changes from the outside world. So, even if abandoning exploration meant that Utopia would fall amid the torrents of the coming era, this was not something the current Utopia could foresee.

After all, it was just a city with Extraordinary Powers, not a Divine Being with life and consciousness.

“The storm is coming soon,” Feng Yu said.

Her gaze was not fixed on the starry sky, but on the faraway intersection between the night sky and the sand dunes, where there was nothing, yet a kind of agitation beyond physicality was spreading, like the faint hum of electricity before a storm.

The impending storm was also mentioned in Lu Ban’s mission. It seemed Utopia was definitely about to experience a thorough downpour that would purge all the old and worn-out things.

Just then, as Lu Ban turned in the direction Feng Yu had indicated, he thought he saw a shadow stirring in the night.

His “True Sight” informed him that this was a human being, not one of those Chosen by Gods from a Foreign Domain.

He stepped out the door and saw the shadowy figure attempting to flee.

Without hesitation, Lu Ban materialized a silver revolver, “Testament,” in his right hand and fired a Speech Bullet at himself.

He suddenly accelerated to the speed of a car in high-speed motion, charging towards the other.

Snap—

Lu Ban almost hit the wall, startling the figure.

“Holy shit!”

The person exclaimed, unable to dodge in time.

Lu Ban realized the language of surprise was not the language of the Wasteland, but one he could understand from Earth.

The Silent Lands’ translation feature directly infused the meaning of words and languages into one’s mind; one would still hear the local speech with their ears, so Lu Ban could tell that this person was from the same place as himself.

He looked at the person who was clearly startled by Lu Ban, but quickly assumed a posture, ready to flee.

Of course, Lu Ban didn’t give him a chance to run away and reached out to grab him immediately.

The person tried to struggle, trying to shake off Lu Ban’s hands, but suddenly found that Lu Ban’s hands were as flexible as rubber, directly coiling around his arm, and like a long snake, continuing to wrap around his body, rendering him immobile.

“Help, help me…”

The man managed to pull out a few words from his throat, seemingly calling out for his companions’ aid.

Following out, Feng Yu saw another figure appearing behind Lu Ban.

That figure seemed to grow out of the shadows of the house, blending in with the night.

Feng Yu was about to take action when she noticed that the shadowy figure was quite petite, like a little girl.

It came to Lu Ban’s side, where the starlight and the insect lamp’s glow illuminated its form.

It was a stunningly beautiful girl, whose mere existence was enough to make one forget to breathe.

She looked at Lu Ban and then at the person he had caught, and spoke.

“What a coincidence, you’re here too?”

“?”

Lu Ban looked at Baobao, dressed in scanty dancer-like clothes, with a question mark floating above his head.
