Chapter 856: 855. Square Debate Chapter 856: 855. Square Debate “This city has rules that must be adhered to…”

After the other party had left, Lu Ban and Feng Yu discussed.

“It’s a bit like a bizarre object; who knows what happens if you break the rules?”

“Why don’t you give it a try?”

Feng Yu suggested.

“Let’s understand the rules first.”

Lu Ban didn’t risk a reckless death. It would be bearable if it were just being struck by lightning, but if he were to be expelled from Utopia, it would be detrimental to completing his mission.

He thought about it and felt the guy next door was quite nice, having reminded him earlier. He decided to ask him later.

However, before that, Lu Ban still wanted to gather some information on the streets to avoid being misled by a single source.

After Feng Yu and he got ready, they came to the streets and Lu Ban quickly noticed many people heading towards a building near the Pyramid.

The building was circular, supported by sturdy columns, resembling a circular plaza.

The steps of the plaza served as seats; men and women alike, whether teenagers in their prime or children just a few years old, all followed the rules, sitting in their places, waiting for something.

Compared to the clothing Lu Ban had initially seen, these people’s were noticeably better, suggesting that the first people he encountered lived on the city’s outer edges.

Lu Ban and Feng Yu found a spot with a good view and sat down, just as two people walked into the center of the circular plaza.

Dressed like scholars from ancient Greece, each had a Crystal located at their neck and on their legs. They glanced at the audience, and one of them said,

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to witness this debate. We will discuss the future development direction of Utopia. I represent the Wild Wolf Guard, and Mr. Blade-foot represents the Academy; we will commence our debate. The only difference between us is our points of view, but our hearts are united in wishing for Utopia’s prosperity.”

The two introduced themselves and then began the debate.

Lu Ban listened for a while and roughly figured out the identities of these two individuals.

The Wild Wolf Guard was Utopia’s military organization, responsible for maintaining the city’s order, whereas the Academy, contrary to its name, was an organization that researched relics and ancient civilizations, charged with exploring relics outside the city.

Clearly, these two factions were also vying for the position of Utopia’s Saint.

The main argument of the Wild Wolf Guard was to protect the City-state; they believed in using the tremendous changes in the world as an opportunity to develop their military strength, insisting that internal stability was a prerequisite for repelling external threats.

On the other hand, the Academy wanted to dispatch more people to seize the initiative as quickly as possible, to discover more relics and obtain resources.

The two had natural contradictions in their needs for resources and both had their own valid points.

As he listened, Lu Ban made an observation.

It seemed the insect swarm had truly disappeared from this world.

This time point should be after his last visit to the Wasteland when he shattered the portal that connected the Ancient Overlord to the Wasteland.

Shuangxin, Moment, and the Singer should have returned to Utopia, sharing the relevant information, thus causing the monumental change in Utopia. While facing this epoch of drastic transformation, the people were seeking the direction of the future; hence such a debate was underway.

During this period, the debate plaza served as a place for representatives of different factions to express their ideas.

Every day, individuals from different factions clashed here, while citizens with voting rights listened to their perspectives, allowing them to decide who to vote for in the upcoming election.

Now Lu Ban understood why the man he met during the day felt that distributing food was a “dishonest practice,” as it was akin to luring the citizens with money, especially those marginal citizens with less favorable living conditions. For people in Utopia who preferred clashing viewpoints to emerge victorious, indeed, this was not a normal tactic.

As for the Rules, while listening to their debate and observing other citizens, Lu Ban also roughly sorted out the extraordinary aspects of Utopia.

The reason this city was called Utopia was that it was established by a Saint named Plato, a name that had been passed down through the generations.

The Rules in Utopia were not man-made but were determined by Plato, the Saint’s Superpower Ability. In Utopia, everyone possessed the right to decide the owner of the city and could also opt to run for election to become the city’s master. Each election was completely open, decided by the collective will for the succession of the Saint, and if the Saint lost the people’s support, he would also lose the corresponding Superpower Ability.

Moreover, all property in Utopia was publicly owned, with everyone pursuing justice. If anyone resorted to bullying, theft, fraud, or other misdeeds, they would face sanctions. Minor offenses might result in banishment, while severe ones could lead to immediate death.

As for the specific Rules, although some had been summarized, no one truly knew what the real Rules were; it was only known that living by correct and impartial methods would, in all likelihood, mean not breaching the Rules.

Or, to put it another way, in Utopia, any just act would be protected.

And if there were any unjust actions, even the Saint would be subject to penalties.

Rather than saying the city was ruled by the Saint, it would be more accurate to say the Saint was ruled by the city itself.

“So it is indeed ‘dishonest practice’…”

Lu Ban thought quietly to himself.

If the Yellow Sand Brotherhood outright bribed voters with money, they would undoubtedly face Utopia’s sanctions. So, they took a cunning approach by distributing food under that guise, a pretext that was clearly within the Rules and justifiable.

In this way, the Yellow Sand Brotherhood indeed managed to effectively bribe voters, but without incurring punishment from Utopia.

“It seems even with rules, people will find loopholes.”

In this case, Lu Ban feared he wouldn’t be able to alter others’ thoughts with “Testament” to achieve victory. He had to either earn the trust of others with impressive perspectives and actions or find loopholes in the Rules to win.

With this in mind, Lu Ban quickly made a plan.

Although unfamiliar with Utopia and uncertain which faction was reliable, since Utopia was undergoing such transformation due to Shuangxin and others’ revelations, it meant they must certainly be in the city.

All Lu Ban needed was to find them, declare his identity, and he would probably gain immense trust, becoming a hero among Utopia’s citizens.

By that time, it wouldn’t just be about helping others to run for election; it would be reasonable for Lu Ban himself to become the Saint.

The debate eventually ended with the victory of the Wild Wolf Guard. Compared to exploration of the outside world, most citizens seemed to care more about their current lives – after all, in this era, even gazing at the stars was a luxury.

Lu Ban saw the representative of the Academy leave dejectedly, and he followed.
