The time showed it was six o’clock sharp, and the day had already brightened. Summer days are always long. The cicadas had not yet awakened, and the surroundings were eerily quiet, save for the sound of a broom sweeping across the cement floor by the sanitation worker cleaning the neighborhood.

“Good morning.”

He said to his reflection in the mirror, then picked up a pen and crossed out the day’s date on the calendar.

He had lived through another day.

Since his discharge from the hospital, Ke Cheng felt as if time, which had previously stalled, had started to flow again.

Although his body still suffered intense pain sometimes—pain that made him want to end it all right there—hope sustained Ke Cheng, and he persevered.

He walked downstairs and prepared to jog for a bit of exercise.

He saw the old man from next door, who was doing morning exercises, and the old man saw Ke Cheng too, with a somewhat peculiar look in his eyes.

“Ke, how’s your health?”

It was indeed strange for a seventy-year-old man to inquire about the health of a thirty-year-old young man.

But the old man had indeed heard that Ke Cheng was diagnosed with a terminal illness and didn’t come back after being hospitalized. He had even discussed this with his chess buddies at the time, reminding each other to take care of their health. Nevertheless, they continued smoking and drinking as usual.

So, when he saw Ke Cheng had come back to live there, he found it very strange. He talked about it with his fishing buddies, amazed at how advanced medical technology had become to even cure cancer.

“Not too bad.”

Ke Cheng replied, warming up and then beginning to jog.

His physical condition had improved quite a bit, maybe because he now had a goal or perhaps due to the effects of Golden Wine.

After exercising in the morning, Ke Cheng began studying.

During his last trip to the Foreign Domain, he deeply realized that the Foreign Domain was not as comfortable as his own world. There were indescribable monsters, dangerous enemies, and situations strange enough to shatter one’s sanity.

As a worker, being able to survive with the help of a beautiful young woman was already extremely lucky. He couldn’t expect to encounter her again next time.

Thus, Ke Cheng began learning some basic self-defense and combat skills, along with wilderness survival techniques, to ensure that he wouldn’t starve to death if stranded on The Island again.

As for weapons, Ke Cheng had no way to obtain any practical weapons, so he went to the hardware store and bought a crowbar, which was quite handy.

After studying for a while, Ke Cheng put on “Morning Star.”

According to the information he had received previously, there was a certain preparation period for this mission, and today was the deadline.

In that vast starry sky, Ke Cheng saw an ancient-looking door. Above that door, in somewhat messy and hurried writing, was the content of this mission.

“Master of the Yellow Sands”

“The desert is merciless; all splendid creations will fade and erode under the assault of sand and wind. Yet the desert is also passionate; above the Oasis, life flourishes, Torrential Rain falls, and vitality abounds.”

“Humanity has never dared claim mastery over the desert. This Wasteland remains ever mysterious. Even in an age where insect swarms have vanished, countless still perish here.”

“Now, in the great city, conspiracies are brewing. As the crisis disperses, some tactics seem no longer necessary. Forces from the shadows grow restless, a storm is coming, and everything will change.”

“Enter the great city, find your place in this transformation, and survive until the end.”

“Mission target: Survive until the storm ends.”

“This time it’s the desert…”

Ke Cheng had also been learning survival skills for the desert during this period.

For instance, one’s internal circulation is crucial when severely dehydrated.

Sweat and urine are precious sources of water.

However, substances like urine are not typically drinkable directly, as the harmful substances in it could prevent absorption, leading to waste and illness.

At such times, the human intestines can play a role. The intestines have a strong ability to absorb and filter water, thus properly sourcing water becomes essential.

This is a knowledge point, it will be tested.

“When the storm ends, this is a survival task; the best strategy is to find an absolutely safe place to hide… Do not touch potentially dangerous events, avoid suspicious contacts…”

Ke Cheng quickly thought of some basic survival rules.

At least this mission looked like it was set in a city, so he didn’t need to worry about a lack of water to drink.

However, whether the storm refers to a sandstorm in the desert or a political upheaval in the city, Ke Cheng didn’t know.

He was not familiar with, nor interested in, politics.

As he pushed the door and entered, Ke Cheng felt everything around him spinning.

The air suddenly became scorching, and he felt as though the air he breathed was gritty and stifling, and the temperature around him rose.

Regaining his senses, Ke Cheng realized he was sitting in a mud house, its bed and table made from piled earth, exuding a primitive charm.

“Are you awake?”

At the table sat a girl dressed in a dancer’s gossamer clothes, the same one Ke Cheng had encountered in his previous mission.

She glanced at Ke Cheng, then went back to fiddling with a trinket in her hands.

“Here we meet again.”

Ke Cheng stood up and stretched, noticing his clothes had changed to a hooded cloak common in the desert.

Noise came from outside; he looked out.

Although he planned to find a place to hide until the mission ended, Ke Cheng still needed to understand the situation here, at least to determine what “safe” really meant.

Outside, there was a constant flow of people, bustling about.

It seemed they were welcoming something.

Ke Cheng looked up at the sky; the sun was shining brightly, not indicative of any incoming storm.

Moving into the crowd, Ke Cheng saw a procession entering through the city gates.

These people were riding some odd creatures and looked quite exhausted.

What Ke Cheng found strange was that they all had crystalline parts on their bodies, which did not look like armor, but rather like some kind of growth.

Leading them was an old-fashioned dressed man, resembling an ancient Greek statue, accompanied by someone of dignified aura.

These people were of mixed heritage, with both Eastern charm and Western angular features. Only one person, with black hair and eyes, looked to be from the same ethnicity as Ke Cheng.

“These people are…”

Ke Cheng murmured unconsciously, feeling that the more people there were, the more complex and troublesome things he needed to handle.

“That is Mr. Du, the Governor’s chief advisor, the foremost individual beneath the Saint.”

A helpful citizen next to Ke Cheng explained

“Mr. Du?”

Ke Cheng squinted, growing curious about this man’s background.
