Chapter 814 - 814 813. Long Voyage in the Windless Belt
Chapter 814: 813. Long Voyage in the Windless Belt Chapter 814: 813. Long Voyage in the Windless Belt As the ship plunged into the Windless Belt, Zhang Zheng felt that something had changed.
The thundering roar of the lightning became subdued, and the torrential rain that had been raging nearby suddenly calmed down. The noise that once filled his ears vanished, leaving only a silent world.
He felt as if even the air had frozen, his breathing became difficult, the once light air turned heavy, and even his reactions started to slow.
However, the next moment, as if caressed by a spring breeze, Zhang Zheng felt everything return to normal, and he took deep breaths of fresh air before turning back to look at the storm behind the ship.
The gale outside the Windless Belt persisted, but within the belt, there was a timeless tranquility.
The ship stopped less than a hundred meters from the edge of the Windless Belt; it seemed that even the gale wind and torrential rain could not push the ship further in.
Or to put it another way, those who could navigate within the Windless Belt likely possessed some Superpower Ability.
Zhang Zheng looked deeper into the Windless Belt and saw the sea as smooth and flat as a mirror’s surface, with not the slightest sea breeze to ripple it. He took a button from his pocket and tossed it into the sea.
The button hit the water, stirring up a small splash, but quickly, the ripples subsided, and it returned to its original calm state.
“There really is no wind here.”
While Zhang Zheng was contemplating, he saw the sailors coming out of the cabin one after another, curiously observing their surroundings.
“What are you all standing around for? Bring out that device.”
Zhang Zheng urgently commanded.
The sailors clumsily carried the heavy equipment up, installed it at the stern of the ship, and Zhang Zheng poured a barrel of wine into it, then tossed the burning wick into the spark plug and started the steam engine.
“Hmm?”
He discovered the machine did not respond, so he pulled the rope meant to get the pistons moving once more.
This time, the pleasant sound of the engine operating finally began.
The propeller started to turn, and the entire vessel began to slowly move.
“Not bad at all, just a little wasteful on the wine.”
Zhang Zheng sighed, took a big gulp of the wine in his hand, then poured the rest into the steam engine.
Lu Ban also came up on deck.
Shia’s spells ensured the area around the ship was free from Pollution, and Lu Ban used True Sight to look around, numerous words emerged into view.
“Power that brings all things towards stasis surrounds this place, do not stop moving.”
“There seems to be some unusual entities ahead, proceed with caution.”
“If you die here, your body won’t decay for hundreds of years, isn’t that moving!”
“It’s best to keep quiet, in this silent place, any action will draw their attention.”
“It seems there are other creatures here.”
That was to be expected; after all, the Treasure Map had depicted those monsters. The Windless Belt might bring everything to stasis, but certainly, there were creatures that could rely on their Extraordinary Powers to exempt themselves.
This also explained why, in such a tranquil sea, anything capable of moving normally would quickly catch the attention of those creatures.
Like… right now.
Lu Ban glanced at the thundering steam engine.
The next moment, he felt a certain palpitation.
He went to the bow of the ship, and under the reflection of the starry sky, Lu Ban saw something dark gathering beneath the calm surface of the sea ahead.
Pollution attracts pollution.
These creatures, able to move freely in the Windless Belt, must have endured a great deal of pollution. They crave other sources of pollution too and, upon detecting someone entering the Windless Belt, they would follow the disturbance.
In Lu Ban’s True Sight, he could see the monster in its entirety.
It was a snake-like creature, as thick as a tanker truck, covered in sharp scales. Its head had pale bony plates, much like the creature depicted in treasure maps.
But Lu Ban could see clearly now that it wasn’t wrapped in bones outside its skin; its head was solely bone.
Without skin, muscle, or blood vessels, the skull was hollow. Green flames flickered in the creature’s eye sockets, burning fiercely even underwater, illuminating a vast expanse of sea and dimming the stars above.
The serpent’s body was also comprised of bones, devoid of flesh, as if a long-dead specter had risen from a pile of bones. Its black skeleton was intermittently visible in the water.
The snake stretched for hundreds of meters, enough to capsize an entire ship. It moved swiftly and in the blink of an eye, it was within arm’s reach.
Lu Ban stood at the bow, materializing the silver revolver “Testament” in his hand.
Loading it with a Speech Bullet, the echoes of ancient existences, he aimed at the approaching monster and fired decisively.
The invisible bullet struck the monster, and Lu Ban saw its movements suddenly become less smooth.
It began to twist and turn, churning the water, breaking the surface’s calm. The creature then shot toward the sky, its eyes’ green flames turning red and rapidly spreading through its body.
It seemed that although these creatures could move in the Windless Belt, they still couldn’t resist the whispers of ancient beings.
After all, He Dao in its early days probably wasn’t as severely polluted, so these creatures didn’t exhibit the same pollution-resistance characteristics as the filth. A single Speech Bullet was more than sufficient.
The giant serpent burrowed into the clouds, where it writhed, releasing crimson lightning.
“It seems that wasn’t quite enough.”
Lu Ban watched as a layer of fuzz quickly grew on the serpent’s black bones, expanding rapidly into flesh. In a moment, a great decaying-flesh serpent appeared above the clouds.
Although driven mad by the whispers of ancient existences, it didn’t die instantly; it merely lost its initial target.
Further, as the Corrosion spread, it began to release its own Pollution. Fortunately, the stasis inherent to the Windless Belt meant the spread of pollution was extremely slow until it finally came to a halt.
Then, an exceedingly bizarre situation unfolded.
The decaying serpent tumbled in the clouds, suddenly slowing down.
Then, its movements froze in place.
The deep red lightning, the dark clouds, and the vaguely visible serpent above were all suspended midair.
It was as if it had always existed and would continue to exist.
“It looks like its sanity was affected, causing the extraordinary powers that opposed this sea’s characteristics to fail; that’s why it was bound here.”
Shia glanced at it, then turned to see the sailors staring dumbfounded at everything, feeling as if a nightmare had breached into reality.
To some extent, their sanity must have been diminished too.
With his mouth agape, Ah Xiang stared at the serpent frozen midair and was suddenly struck with inspiration.
“If this place has such characteristics, could there be ancient creatures, or even humans, that have been preserved here?”
Amidst the clamor of the propellers, they quickly spotted an opulent, brightly lit ship moored in the waters ahead.
