I Forged the Myth of the Ancient Overlords -
Chapter 810 - 810 809. Evolution
Chapter 810: 809. Evolution Chapter 810: 809. Evolution The looting of the pirate base was slower than expected.
These pirates pillaged and plundered, collecting an array of random items.
Still, if one could rely on these pirates to have some skills in organizing materials, it wouldn’t be entirely hopeless.
Food and fabric were stored together, many already moldy, while the cannonballs had long been dampened, likely incapable of exploding even if ignited.
There were also many sacks of coins, rusted weapons, and more.
The remaining pirates on the island were tied up and placed in a small wooden hut, their mouths gagged, only able to make muffled sounds.
They were the lucky ones, for Lu Ban had no time yet to delve into their memories.
The sailors were sorting through the treasures on the island, and watching them load the ship made it unclear who the real pirates were.
“Is this also considered a treasure?”
Captain Zhang Zheng muttered to himself.
It seemed indeed faster to loot from pirates than to venture into the unknown islands.
Of course, under normal circumstances, their ship could only manage to hold its own against the pirates, relying on toughness to withstand the encounters; if faced with several pirate ships, it would likely be tough to handle.
If it weren’t for Shia and the others, it wouldn’t have been so profitable.
Magic is indeed a wonderful thing.
Captain Zhang Zheng thought, then issued a few more commands.
“Be gentle, these are antiques. Search every corner, make sure we don’t leave anything behind.”
As he spoke, he saw his friend Ah Xiang bending over, searching for something on a distant beach.
Beside him, Baobao and Lu Ban followed the scholar.
“What are you looking for?”
Lu Ban asked curiously.
“I heard that there’s a peculiar species of Barnacle Crab on the islands around this sea area, and I wanted to see if it’s here.”
Bending over, Ah Xiang spoke, carefully examining the beach.
At first glance, the yet-to-be-flooded beach seemed ordinary, but a closer look revealed tiny holes in the sand, as if insects had burrowed in and excavated the grains.
Ah Xiang scooped up a handful of sand and carefully brushed away the impurities, revealing something wriggling in his palm.
A tiny crab, only the size of a fingernail, emerged from the moist sand, attempting to escape from Ah Xiang’s palm.
He quickly caught it with his other hand, their hands continuously interchanging until all the sand fell away, leaving only the small crab. Ah Xiang carefully observed, trying to memorize all the details of the creature.
“Look, because it lives on the beach, it needs the ability to navigate through sand rather than swimming. That’s why its pincers are larger, and the ends of its two legs have gradually degenerated into claws, allowing it to stay firmly in place in the tidal waters.”
Ah Xiang said excitedly, and after observing, he placed the crab back on the beach. The agile crab quickly found a patch of loose sand and swiftly buried itself, using its pincers to cover itself with sand.
It was quite cute.
Lu Ban noticed Baobao was imitating, grabbing a handful of sand herself.
In an instant, there was also something wriggling within that sand.
However, it wriggled more and more violently, and soon several tentacles stretched out.
Quickly, a creature resembling an octopus, with tentacles and a soft head but with a crab’s eight legs and pincers, emerged from Baobao’s palm. It had large, intelligent eyes on its head.
The creature continued to wriggle, twitching its tentacles, making one’s scalp tingle.
Yet, it slowly moved on Baobao’s hand, the image of its tentacles entwining around the young girl’s fair wrist somewhat distasteful.
“What did you do?”
Lu Ban glanced at Ah Xiang, still searching for other crabs for comparison and unaware of their situation, and questioned Baobao.
“Just a little bit of acceleration.”
Baobao and the creature stared eye to eye; she allowed it to climb her smooth arm. However, when the creature’s tentacles tried to reach inside her sleeve, Baobao grabbed the creature with her other hand and, without a second thought, squeezed it until it burst.
Pu—
Dark green liquid splattered, landing on the beach, quickly washed away by the tide.
“Creating a creature is mostly quite boring, because if you want them to survive in this world, you must carefully take care of them, helping them navigate many troubles.”
Baobao released her grip, throwing the monster’s carcass into the sea, her hands still clean and spotless.
“Just like how humans keep cats, finding the cats cute and enjoying their company, but most overlook that they are living beings that need to eat, drink, and relieve themselves. You have to take care of these cats, and when you’re woken up at night by the smell of cat poop, even the cutest creature seems so evil.”
“You seem to understand quite a lot.”
Lu Ban didn’t know Baobao had ever kept cats.
“So oftentimes, we randomly create some creatures without caring what happens afterward. For me, it mainly depends on whether the process is interesting or not.”
Baobao took off her shoes and socks, pale bare feet stepping on the beach, leaving delicate footprints.
The barnacle crabs buried deep in the gravel might never know that they had once been stepped on by an incarnation of the Ancient Overlord.
The cold seawater submerged Baobao’s toes, she slightly lifted the hem of her crimson robe to keep it from getting wet, walking towards the deeper water like a child, her feet lightly touching the clear water.
“Will you join me?”
Baobao invited Lu Ban.
Under the sun, she indeed looked somewhat familiar.
“I’m not a child.”
Lu Ban declined Baobao’s proposal.
“That makes me sound like a child.”
Baobao appeared slightly displeased.
“How old are you?”
Lu Ban countered.
“Six months?”
Baobao tilted her head, unsure.
“That is indeed quite young.”
Lu Ban thought for a while. That age must refer to the time this incarnation had been in existence.
If connected to the time of memories and knowledge, perhaps Baobao couldn’t even state that number.
“Aren’t you going to carry away that money?”
Ignoring Baobao playing in the water, Lu Ban turned to look at Ah Xiang.
This man was completely different from those sailors. Instead of gold and treasure, it seemed these marvelous creatures were his treasures.
“I’m not interested in those.”
Ah Xiang said, as he was documenting the ecological state of the recently observed barnacle crabs with a brush. Only after finishing his last stroke did he look up and continue speaking.
“Our activities have already caused many changes in this world, many creatures can no longer be seen, but I believe, within the secluded islands of the ocean, there may still be creatures unaffected by our activities, possibly even retaining their ancient forms.”
He gazed at the glittering sea, the sun gradually setting, casting a golden glow, a young girl in white and crimson robes frolicking in the water, giving a momentary sense of peaceful years.
“I’ve always been curious about how humans came to be and how creatures evolved into their current form. I want to understand this ocean, the meaning of this world. There must be a reason why we have become what we are, my research topic is about evolution.”
Ah Xiang, when talking about his specialty, became more talkative.
“Just like these crabs, their differences from other crabs are due to their different environments. Eventually, perhaps only the species that adapted to the environment survived and evolved into their current forms. What about humans, then? Why do humans look the way they do now?”
He wasn’t asking Lu Ban but was looking toward the sky, as if posing these questions to some great existence quietly watching from high above.
Ah Xiang might not realize that the answers to these questions could possibly be provided by that girl playing in the water. Of course, upon receiving all these answers, Ah Xiang might no longer be able to maintain his human form.
Just as Ah Xiang wanted to say more, he heard a call from the dock area.
“Hey, Ah Xiang, we’ve found a treasure map!”
Captain Zhang Zheng waved his arms, exuberantly announcing.
