Chapter 776: 775.【Film Festival】_1 Chapter 776: 775.【Film Festival】_1 “Fuck, dead again.”

Old Eggplant cursed, as he faced the vast Sea of Stars. He fell silent for a moment before ultimately taking off his helmet.

Back in the real world, Old Eggplant looked around his familiar room and suddenly felt a sense of unreality.

Of course, he hadn’t reached the point where he couldn’t tell reality from illusion, but as the game progressed, Old Eggplant increasingly felt that the world was not as straightforward as it appeared on the surface. In the shadows of the world, evil grew, and people like himself could only be said to see the most superficial things. The true reality of the world was far beyond their reach.

Take, for example, the current instance he was playing in [The Silent Land], named “The Last Lesson.” The main task was to explore a school where a murder had occurred and seek out the truth of that year.

It was simple, much like some text-based adventure horror games.

But the problem was, this damn game was on “Morning Star”!

Controlling a character on a computer screen pales in comparison to personally discovering the truth bit by bit in that decrepit school.

Old Eggplant used to think those live broadcasts of midnight adventures with a flashlight in abandoned factories and hospitals were boring, but now, doing it in the game, that was truly thrilling.

Not to mention, this wasn’t just any abandoned school; there seemed to be something else there, ominously affecting Old Eggplant.

He had barely passed the first task in [The Silent Land], and then he encountered “The Last Lesson” on his second task.

After completing the first task, he received a reward, which was said to come into effect at critical moments, with a certain probability of reversing the situation. However, Old Eggplant couldn’t pin his hopes on that.

He had just entered this task when it had barely gotten dark and he died, caught by something in a toilet stall that dragged him into the toilet bowl.

Old Eggplant immediately took off his helmet and took a bath in the bathroom until he was clean and refreshed in the mirror, smiling at himself, then went back to continue the strategy.

Then, Old Eggplant also recalled that many of Lu Ban’s plots had connections with reality. So, he did some searching and found out there was indeed a school near Jiangcheng that had been shut down following some scandals, with the students dispersed to other schools.

He compared the news photos with what he saw in the game, which could not be said to be unrelated at all, but rather completely identical.

Old Eggplant then searched for more information about the school, only learning that a girl had seemingly committed suicide there back then, and there were also various other rumors.

Some said it was a case of collective crime, others thought it was an economic dispute, and there were even bizarre rumors that a sacrificial ritual had taken place there. Old Eggplant read for over an hour and ended up with no clue whatsoever.

Several days had now passed since he started this task, and Old Eggplant was still stuck in the middle. He had figured out that a girl indeed died there years ago, but he knew nothing about why or how she died, nor whether it was suicide or homicide.

He felt overwhelmed and struggled to continue.

Washing his face, Old Eggplant was about to order some takeout when he glanced at his phone and saw that their [The Silent Land] group chat had been filled with many messages.

“The Wandering Swordsman”: Have you guys gotten the special mission? It seems to be a special task.

“Little Roman”: I got it, has anyone else checked it out?

“Call Me Hero”: Not yet, I’m still getting brutalized in the school. Does anyone know how to deal with that woman in the red dress in the hallway? She’s stabbed me to death three or four times now!

“Broken Halberd”: That’s easy, when she’s walking down the hallway, hide in a classroom. Wait until she passes this floor before coming out. Don’t confront her head-on, you can’t beat her; it’s a direct plot kill.

“Genius Got the Hang Of It”: Has anyone tested out this mission? If not, I’ll ask again later.

The group consisted of people who had received the test qualification for [The Silent Land]. According to Old Eggplant’s research, most of them possessed some level of supernatural ability, which didn’t necessarily make life more convenient but rather caused some trouble.

After receiving the test qualification from Lu Ban, they entered [The Silent Land] one after another to study this new game.

Soon, these players discovered what set this game apart.

While it also boasted a high degree of freedom, the instances in these games were mostly confined to a specific time period and area, as if a slice of film had been cut from a reel.

Some also chatted and bantered in the group chat, even coming up with the title “Chosen by Gods,” believing that they were the selected ones destined for great things.

It was only after seeing the discussion in the group that Old Eggplant realized [The Silent Land] had been updated.

And a special mission had been released on top of that.

There wasn’t much discussion about the mission in the group because everyone was still busy with previous tasks, and they didn’t know what this special mission entailed. If it turned out to be difficult and they got stuck, that would really be cause for tears and laughter.

Old Eggplant wasn’t in a hurry either; after all, he definitely wouldn’t be able to clear it anytime soon.

After eating his takeout and fully resting, he put on his helmet and updated the game.

Soon, in [The Silent Land], another door appeared.

This door had a hint of the style from the 1920s and 1930s, wooden, with what seemed to be mottled marks on it; whether they were bullet holes or claw marks, they gave off a creepy feeling.

Wisps of fog spilled out from behind the door.

Old Eggplant sniffed but didn’t smell anything odd.

On the door, cold, indifferent silver lettering emerged.

[Film Festival]

[The Miskatonic Film Festival is North America’s fantasy film extravaganza, where imagination intertwines without end.]

[Yet this year, the closed-off, backward, xenophobic city seems a bit different.]

[The fog of New England envelops the place, the citizens become dull and agitated, with strange smiles on their faces, the airwaves are filled with creepy dialogues, and though the sun still shines brilliantly, is that really true?]

[You come to this city to help a college student team shoot a horror movie, yet the content of that clumsy script is unfolding in reality, everything races towards madness.]

[Mission Requirement: Witness the ending of the movie.]

[Mission Requirement: Survive.]

[“The camera, don’t stop!”]

Reading these words, Old Eggplant took a sharp intake of breath.

He was aware of the Miskatonic Film Festival, a somewhat niche North American fantasy, science fiction, and horror film festival. Enthusiasts of B-movies definitely wouldn’t miss it.

He immediately took off his helmet and searched online, and soon, Old Eggplant clicked into the festival’s official website.

[The Miskatonic Film Festival, now in progress.]

Seeing those words, Old Eggplant felt a sensation where reality and fantasy intertwined.
