I Forged the Myth of the Ancient Overlords -
Chapter 726 - 726 Pioneer_1
Chapter 726: Pioneer_1 Chapter 726: Pioneer_1 Compared to the Magic Network, building fortresses was evidently much simpler.
The gravitational constant here was similar to that of the universe where Earth resided, and most of the mechanical formulas also held true. After conducting some simple tests, Wang Hao began the design and construction work.
He first wanted to design the Gray Tower, but upon hearing that this high tower involved, besides the normal physical structure, aspects of magic, which Wang Hao knew nothing about, he had to give up the idea.
What these drafting dogs feared most was the client demanding endless changes. Sometimes, after a design was completed and presented to the client, the client would show it to his “friends”, and then a plethora of opinions would follow. After struggling through several revisions, just when they thought it was about right, the client would say that the original design was better after all, enough to make one spit blood in frustration.
Therefore, Wang Hao naturally avoided magic buildings that he didn’t understand.
The first thing he directed in the construction was the fortress.
The fortress design requirements needed to accommodate thousands of people living and fighting within its walls. It needed sturdy fortifications, spacious warehouses, convenient corridors for travel, rooms for rest, as well as structures that could fall back and continue the defence once the outer layers were breached. Of course, it also required atop the stronghold a structure similar to that of the Gray Tower.
Wang Hao was participating in the design and manufacture of such a rugged building for the first time. Basically, there was no need for any sense of design, fashion, or to consider trends and aesthetics—sturdiness was all that mattered.
Of course, he still encountered quite a few problems.
For example, in modern construction, reinforced concrete is a common structure, using steel to bear tensile forces and concrete to bear compressive forces, attaining excellent building performance at relatively low costs.
If it were purely made of mud, low buildings would be okay, but once the floors were high, the problem of structural integrity would arise, easily collapsing with a gust of wind.
Originally, Wang Hao had intended to replicate the routine process.
However, he soon discovered that metal was a scarce material in the Night Country. The armor worn by the knights represented the pinnacle of their smelting techniques, but it was still fragile compared to real steel and hardly withstood a blow.
In a place where fires mainly relied on firewood, it was even less imaginable how steel could be forged.
Only then did Wang Hao truly appreciate the importance of the modern industrial system. Even though they mastered the construction methods, the material production chain was limiting their progress. Many things that were ordinarily taken for granted now seemed far from guaranteed.
For instance, Wang Hao had long not used his hands to draw, instead of a computer.
Standing on the foundation of the fortress, Wang Hao gazed into the depths of the Black Forest, hoping that the players venturing into the forest might find some iron ore or similar resources.
In places Wang Hao’s gaze couldn’t reach, Old Eggplant, wielding his weapon, was leading players who were pioneering the Black Forest through the dense foliage.
They had left Sunset Town three days ago and ventured into unprecedented depths of the Black Forest.
Along the way, Old Eggplant had encountered some Demonic Beasts. Fortunately, this group of players were elites from the closed beta testers, each having experienced hundreds of deaths and were well-practiced, capable of handling common small Demonic Beasts with closed eyes. Thus far, no casualties had occurred.
But the emotional stress was considerable.
This game had no Hearthstone, no Homecoming Scrolls, nor Aether’s Light. The deeper they delved into the Black Forest, the more they felt lost and alone.
It was like humanity leaving Earth to explore the stars, this feeling of being utterly adrift, corroding people’s inner selves moment by moment.
Moreover, the water, soil, trees, and air of the Black Forest all carried pollution. This insidious pollution magnified human emotions; ordinary worries gradually turned into panic, timidity intensified into dread, dissatisfaction evolved into anger. On their third day into the Black Forest, Old Eggplant could sense an uneasy atmosphere spreading amongst the team.
Their exploration mission was straightforward: to find resources in the Black Forest, whether mineral or otherwise. In any case, the goal was to pioneer new land to provide resources for the construction of Sunset Town.
Only now did Old Eggplant truly appreciate the courage of the pioneers of the past.
“There seems to be something ahead.”
A scout who was operating away from the team returned to the group and made his report.
The adventurers were spread out over a wide area to prevent being wiped out by an unexpected encounter with demonic beasts, and the most agile scouts were positioned at the outermost perimeter.
Old Eggplant followed the player to the front and discovered an open space.
More precisely, it was a pit.
It seemed as though something had struck the area, creating a deep crater. One could imagine that the location had once been a lush forest, which was no longer thriving after that event, hence the vast pit.
Old Eggplant estimated that the pit was at least as big as four standard football fields. From a bird’s-eye view, it was certainly a sight to behold.
Furthermore, the pit looked as if it had been there for some time; vegetation had already crept over the sides, and there was even a small lake formed at the bottom from the collected water.
On one side of the pit, Old Eggplant quickly noticed that the exposed area was not the yellow-brown of ordinary soil but a bleak blackish-green. The vast swathes of blackish-green showed no signs of life, resembling a scar that was gradually healing over.
“It looks like some type of ore.”
One of the players who had some knowledge on the subject commented.
Old Eggplant pulled out the homemade compass that Lu Ban had given him.
He noticed that the compass was skewed, a clear sign of a large-scale iron deposit in the vicinity, with portions of the iron ore being magnetized, attracting the compass’s needle.
“Let’s go have a look.”
Old Eggplant ordered some players to stand guard near the pit, while he took a few players down the slope towards the blackish-green rocks.
Upon reaching the rocks, Old Eggplant confirmed that they were not coal. The ore was quite sturdy and seemed to extend deep into the soil. He casually dug with a shovel and couldn’t see where the base was.
After chipping off a few pieces and marking the coordinates on his hand-drawn map, Old Eggplant planned to have it tested when they returned. If it really was an iron deposit, they would have found a source for their weapons and equipment.
However, just as Old Eggplant was about to head back, he heard a deep, reverberating roar.
Turning around, Old Eggplant saw ripples spreading across the pond at the bottom of the pit.
Somewhat was about to emerge from it.
Old Eggplant instinctively drew his sword.
He saw the large shadow in the water rising through the waves; the beast’s body was as if coated in a layer of ore, exhibiting a metallic, iridescent color. It had six legs, no eyes could be found on its head, and its massive size was comparable to a three-story building.
At the same time, Old Eggplant felt the ground shake; the “ore” began to tremble and withdrew from the soil.
This was actually part of the monster’s body!
“Damn, did we just run into a wild boss?”
Old Eggplant saw the giant beast in the water casting a shadow over the sunlight.
