Chapter 714: 713. The farming talent etched into the genes_1 Chapter 714: 713. The farming talent etched into the genes_1 The fire had lasted until morning, and all through the night, Sunset Town was shrouded in an orange-yellow twilight.
The dense smoke from the wildfire rushed towards the sky, obliterating the moonlight.
Many villagers had walked out of their houses, watching the Black Forest being consumed by flames. The firelight solidified in their eyes, and their originally dim gazes seemed to glean a momentary brilliance from it.
For thousands of years, no one had managed to do this.
Even if one set fire to the forest, the Black Forest would regrow rapidly. It encroached on farmland and released various terrifying monsters. As for the Demonic Tide, the majority of people who survived its onslaught were few, and many had no concept of this world’s greatest disaster.
But it seemed that the situation was a little different now.
Despite knowing that the flames could temporarily destroy the forest, only for the vegetation to cover it again after a while, the villagers were clear that this was a futile effort.
However, a flicker of hope had ignited in their hearts, hoping that these strangely behaving people could truly eradicate the Black Forest.
At dawn, after resting for a while, Old Eggplant logged in again. He saw that a large area of the forest had been burned to ash, leaving nothing but foul-smelling black remnants. The flames continued to spread, but the dampness of the Black Forest had reduced the fire’s intensity, and he estimated that it would be completely subdued after a while.
Of course, all Old Eggplant and his companions had to do was add more fire.
Upon reaching the ruins, the area of cleared forest land far exceeded the total farmland of Sunset Town. Old Eggplant, relying on his memory, made his way to the vicinity of the flowerbeds, and he noticed that the remnants here were somewhat different—they didn’t appear to have been completely consumed by the fire.
He also noticed a problem.
That was the longsword and the armor that had been in the flowerbeds had melted due to the high temperatures of the wildfire and had seeped into the soil, now impossible to find.
“Didn’t think of this one…”
Old Eggplant felt somewhat disappointed but quickly pulled himself together.
“We can clean up this place first, clear the land, and plant some fast-growing crops, to solve the food problem first.”
Old Eggplant had only eaten a bowl of instant noodles before going to sleep; he hadn’t eaten anything in the game, so both his virtual and real stomachs were hungry.
He didn’t know how crops grew in the Night Country, whether there was any rice that could reap three harvests a year. But since magic existed, there certainly would be magical plants.
Old Eggplant even wondered if there would be any magical plants like pea shooters, corn cannons, or squashes that could attack.
For now, he and other players borrowed hoes and plowed the charred land.
It must be said that farming is a talent truly etched into the genes. Old Eggplant, a young man who grew up in the city, took up a hoe and worked most of the day, finding the task satisfying and pleasant.
Although it was quite tiring.
By noon, Old Eggplant had nearly cleaned up a third of the area.
He decided to go find Lu Ban to report his achievement.
After gathering some remnants of the burnt flowers, Old Eggplant and a few players returned to the town and headed to the door of the Baron’s Mansion.
“Open up, open up, we’ve brought back the corpses of demonic beasts.”
Old Eggplant called out as he knocked on the door.
After a while, someone opened the door.
Old Eggplant remembered him; this was Stone, the detective from the Abandoned Capital.
Although he did not know how Stone had arrived at the Night Country, since he was here, Old Eggplant did not probe further, taking it as an Easter egg.
“We cleared the burnt forest and brought back these.”
Old Eggplant, holding charred vines, threw them on the ground.
Stone looked at the vines and acknowledged they could not have grown from normal plants.
After thinking for a moment, he called for Lu Ban.
“They want a reward.”
Stone suggested asking Lu Ban for anything they needed.
When Lu Ban saw the vines, he honestly found them of little use for their research. But since he had promised resources, he intended to honor his word.
Lu Ban asked them to wait, went around to the other side of the house, and brought back some rusty, broken weapons.
Then, he inscribed words on them.
[Effective damage against trees]
[Easily cuts off the limbs of demonic beasts]
[Impressive protective effect, capable of withstanding monster claw strikes]
Those odd and mismatched weapons seemed to have changed, yet also seemed unchanged.
Lu Ban moved them over to Old Eggplant and his group.
“Is this it?”
Stone glanced at the unwanted weapons, thinking it was wishful thinking to try to appease these people with such things.
Yet, unexpectedly, Old Eggplant was shocked when he received the equipment.
“Are there really weapons?”
“Is this a sword? It looks like it could be very sharp.”
“This shield has clearly been baptized by the fires of war, the scars on its surface are badges of honor!”
“I’ll take this spear, the longer the weapon, the safer I feel.”
“It’s a pity there’s no armor, I kind of wanted to be a knight.”
The players divided up the weapons in no time, without a hint of dissatisfaction.
“?”
Stone began to think that maybe Lu Ban had done some trick to bewilder these people.
“Right, there’s more.”
Lu Ban turned around and stealthily took a handful of chicken feed from the pecking fowl, which appeared to be some kind of grain seed–the kind you plant in fields, harvested once a year to be ground into flour for baking bread and such.
On these seeds, Lu Ban continued to write words.
[Only needs three days from planting to maturity, resistant to disaster and disease, will grow in any soil]
Then, he bagged these grains in a cloth sack and handed it to Old Eggplant.
“Plant these seeds, remember to water them, and you’ll have a harvest in three days.”
Old Eggplant solemnly took the bag of grain, more excitement in his eyes.
Magic plants do exist!
Though not a Peashooter, he had never heard of such a crop that could be harvested in just three days–it must be magic!
Holding the bag of grains, Old Eggplant returned to the edge of the fields.
“Is this it? This isn’t enough to eat.”
A player questioned.
“This isn’t for eating, it’s for planting.”
Old Eggplant retorted, and then looked at the others.
“Who knows how to farm here?”
Although Old Eggplant often played games that involved farming, raising livestock, and fishing, he had never actually worked the land himself. At times like this, it was better to seek out an expert.
However, the players all exchanged glances, none of them knowing anything about farming.
After all, each one of them was a hardcore gamer, your typical indoor person. They hadn’t even gone camping, let alone knew how to work the land.
But the players were quite clever.
Old Eggplant suggested they first build a few shacks next to the newly cleared fields. Then he logged out of the game, turned on an old video website, and typed into the search bar.
How to farm?
