Chapter 684: 683. Demonic Descent_1 Chapter 684: 683. Demonic Descent_1 “…It is known that the site of the attack was a hacker organization’s base located in Northern Europe. The police investigation found, according to residency registrations, that there should have been over thirty members living here, but only parts of some members’ remains and traces of certain religious rituals were found. Due to the complex situation at the scene, the police stated that further investigation is required, and currently, no organization has claimed responsibility for this incident.”
The latest news report played on the smartphone, causing the officer in charge, Essenweiler, to shake his head.
“What on earth is this? Can’t our journalists even tell the truth anymore?”
Essenweiler put on his mask, pocketed his phone, lifted the police tape, and entered the abandoned factory.
“Buddy, you gotta understand, if we told the public these people turned into this without any apparent reason, we’d probably be out of a job by tomorrow.”
The police officer next to him spoke, also putting on a mask and gloves.
They passed through a white tent, changed into white contamination suits to prevent pollution, and finally entered the abandoned factory.
A strong stench of blood hit them, a pungent smell that even experienced butchers who worked every day in slaughterhouses could hardly endure. Essenweiler, a detective with sixteen years of field experience, vomited into his isolation suit and was overcome with severe dizziness when he first saw the situation. It took him several hours to begin to recover.
What presented before Essenweiler and his colleague was a vision of Hell that not even Dante’s Divine Comedy could describe.
On the walls, the tables, the computers, even the ceilings, splashes of congealed flesh and blood were everywhere. According to the forensic team, the flesh was thrown there with tremendous force, the impact flattening the pieces like a pancake. The forensics team guessed that this could only happen if an explosion equivalent to a cannon shell occurred inside the human body.
But on further thought, how could a person possibly explode like that?
Essenweiler then looked towards another area on the floor where numerous chunks of flesh had aggregated like living worms, barely recognizable as human. Here were at least five people, fused together in twisted forms. No one but a demon could have conceived why they were like this.
In another corner of the factory, there were even more bizarre corpses, their skeletons, muscles, and blood vessels forming something akin to tentacle-like structures. Of course, that was just what the forensic team referred to them as; in reality, the victims’ forms had collapsed into grotesque monsters. Fortunately, all had bullet holes, probably dealt with by others in the factory.
One could easily imagine a scenario where comrades turned into monsters one by one, then they had to shoot them down with guns, and finally, they couldn’t escape tragic fates themselves.
Of course, that was too far-fetched.
Essenweiler was more inclined to believe this was the work of some cruel, cunning, and perverted criminals indulging their savage desires here.
He proceeded to a room with an even more horrific scene. There were half-eaten corpses, as well as those motionless chunks of flesh and tentacled monsters.
There, Essenweiler saw something strange on a table.
It was a helmet.
Essenweiler, of course, recognized it.
It was “Morning Star.”
He didn’t pay much attention to gaming equipment, but his son, a middle schooler and a fervent fan of Lu Ban, wanted one no matter what.
Luckily, since finding out that Lu Ban’s equipment was only available in Chinese, his son had quieted down a bit. Essenweiler even suggested that his son learn some Chinese – it wouldn’t be a loss, after all.
“How did this thing end up here?”
Essenweiler asked.
“‘Morning Star,’ huh? Our tech team checked the computer hard drives here and found that the hacker organization might have been attempting to crack this device. Unfortunately, it appears they failed since there’s no relevant files on the hard drive, and aside from being dismantled, the device has no other issues,”
his colleague answered.
“Oh.”
Essenweiler shifted his gaze away from the helmet, thinking that these people must have been attacked while trying to crack it, and that the helmet wasn’t directly related to the case.
He scanned the surroundings, and suddenly, a spark of inspiration led Essenweiler to look at the ground.
Beneath an office chair, there seemed to be a pattern made by the bloodstains.
“Look here.”
Essenweiler carefully approached the chair, crouched down, and asked for a flashlight to illuminate the ground.
There, on the congealed blood, was a shoeprint.
The scene was littered with numerous shoeprints, a testament to the chaos of those present, but this one was different.
It was a woman’s shoeprint.
As an experienced criminal detective, Essenweiler immediately recognized that these were the high-heeled footprints of a young woman. She was quite slender, and even though she walked through an area smeared with blood, there was no sign of panic.
It was common knowledge that this organization was officially registered, and the list of fatalities tracked so far contained no women.
Who was this woman?
Essenweiler had a vague feeling that he might have grasped the key to this case.
Just then, his cellphone suddenly rang.
Amidst the quiet bustle of the crime scene, the abrupt ringtone made many people shiver.
Essenweiler glanced at the incoming call and saw that it was his direct superior.
He hurriedly left the scene to where the air was a bit fresher outside and answered the call.
“It’s me, I’m at the scene, we have found some clues… What? Wait, but I… Alright, I understand.”
Essenweiler hung up the phone.
His superior had just told him to immediately archive all information related to this case, close the case at once, and not pursue it any further.
This struck Essenweiler as utterly unreasonable.
However, he had seen this kind of situation before—in cases that touched on areas he was not allowed to probe, such measures were taken.
Although his detective’s instincts told Essenweiler that there might be bigger things involved behind this case, he still suppressed his curiosity.
After work, Essenweiler drove home, accustomed to turning on the car radio for background music.
At that time, he heard some news worth noting.
“… According to our journalist, an explosion occurred at XXXX Company’s experimental base located in XXXX earlier this morning, resulting in the deaths of several engineers. It is reported that the experimental base…”
As he listened to the unexpected news about a weapons company on the radio, he had a strange sense of déjà vu.
He turned up the radio slightly, and as his gaze moved from the radio to the road ahead, Essenweiler suddenly saw a woman donning a cheongsam with a seductive figure right in front of his car.
He quickly stepped on the brakes, but the woman, as if she hadn’t noticed anything here, covered her face with a fan and walked across the street.
There were honks and roars from behind, but Essenweiler sat there, unable to start the car again.
An unpleasant premonition welled up inside him, and it took some effort for Essenweiler to shift his gaze from the corner where the woman had disappeared.
Thud, thud, thud—
The duty traffic officer tapped on Essenweiler’s window, and he rolled it down.
“Sir, are you experiencing any problems?”
The traffic officer asked.
“No, I’m fine. I just had to swerve to avoid that lady…”
Essenweiler was a bit incoherent.
“Lady?”
The traffic officer looked at Essenweiler suspiciously, as if he were looking at those drug addicts who hit the streets speeding after getting high.
“There’s no lady here, sir. You’re in the middle of the street.”
The traffic officer said.
Essenweiler felt his back was soaked with sweat.
