Chapter 650: 649. The Tombstone of Civilization_1 Chapter 650: 649. The Tombstone of Civilization_1 Lu Ban watched her leave and thought for a moment.
He decided to run away.
Who knew what would happen if he followed this crazy woman.
Considering she had just willingly said the names of those incarnations, which she knew could affect people, Lu Ban felt she had ill intentions.
However, in this Foreign Domain, where he was a stranger in a strange land, Lu Ban had no idea where to run. He could only plan to leave the crazy woman’s side first and then see if Laika could come to help.
Just as he was about to start Melting, Lu Ban felt the space around him become twisted.
When he came to his senses, Lu Ban found himself standing behind Charlotte.
“Don’t think about escaping. First, you cannot leave the Splendid Realm on your own, and second, you cannot leave my side on your own either,”
Charlotte reminded him.
“I’m a Common man, how can I be of help to such great beings like you? I’m really not being modest…”
Lu Ban evaded, trying to convince Charlotte to find someone more capable.
He saw that Charlotte didn’t pay attention to him and kept walking forward.
After some thought, Lu Ban felt that Charlotte’s words made sense. On the one hand, he couldn’t be sure he could leave this Foreign Domain by himself; on the other, Lu Ban was also very interested in the Splendid Realm.
If even Charlotte, an Ancient Overlord, took interest in this place, what reason did he have to refuse exploring it!
Even if the strife in the Splendid Realm was doomed to failure, Lu Ban could still learn from history and discover what should not be done and what was useless in the fight against the Mutation of Pollution.
The desolate land gave an illusion; Lu Ban didn’t know how long he had walked, but the immense building still showed no sign of growing closer—perhaps because it was so large that there was no discernible difference even when getting nearer.
Along the way, Lu Ban saw many enormous rocks, about six to eight stories high, all severely weathered, with their original purpose unrecognizable.
If these stones were residential buildings, Lu Ban guessed that this might once have been a prosperous city, because those huge stones were widespread across the desolate land, like tombstones mourning a dead civilization.
The roads had long since eroded away, with only that circular building serving as the sole landmark.
Lu Ban hadn’t seen any other similar towering buildings; he guessed that might be the symbol of this civilization or perhaps a core structure of it.
At this thought, Lu Ban couldn’t help but ask.
“Speaking of which, since you could bring me to this Foreign Domain, why didn’t we go directly to the building instead, and now have to walk there?”
He glanced at Charlotte’s high heels.
Lu Ban wasn’t particularly fond of walking. Though he didn’t know if the Ancient Overlords could feel tired, he believed that time was money. Both of them could have used some Extraordinary method to go near that building instead of dawdling here.
“You don’t know much about the Splendid Realm.”
Charlotte said without turning back, and Lu Ban realized she wasn’t asking a question but making an affirmative statement.
“That’s right.”
Lu Ban admitted frankly.
“Ancient Overlords are above commoners in the Foreign Domain, but the disparity between Ancient Overlords is vast. The weaker ones, like Fang Geng you’ve encountered, can even be Sealed by humans, while the strong ones, or even those above them, require special means to seal them.”
Charlotte’s voice echoed in the night’s Silence.
“And the Splendid Realm’s method of combating Pollution is by sealing the Ancient Overlords along with the Pollution they bring.”
Her words were said lightly, yet they astounded Lu Ban.
The natives of this Foreign Domain could actually Seal Ancient Overlords?
And even seal the Pollution along with them?
Lu Ban was well aware that just facing any Ancient Overlord was beyond his ability to contend with. Merely looking at Them could drive a person into madness, Mutating into a monster.
And such beings could actually be sealed by a civilization from the Foreign Domain, and according to Charlotte’s implication, there wasn’t just one?
If he thought further, even such a civilization had ultimately met its end, could humanity truly contend with the Pollution from the Foreign Domain?
Lu Ban’s mind was filled with a huge question mark.
He grew increasingly curious about the destruction of the Splendid Realm.
And it seemed that Charlotte also cared somewhat about this place.
“The sealing techniques they employed were quite clever, interesting, one might even say, they were the limits of what I have ever seen in humans, or rather, intelligent life forms. Moreover, the power of these seals continued to exist even after their civilization had completely vanished from the endless expanse of the Foreign Domain.”
Charlotte and Lu Ban had now arrived very close to that structure.
Lu Ban saw that under the arc was a rectangular building, roughly fifty stories tall and wide enough to obstruct the view. Despite this, Lu Ban did not believe that Earth’s building materials could support such a strange structure; perhaps some ancient and undisturbed extraordinary power was at play.
They reached the entrance of the building.
Only then did Lu Ban realize that the size of the building’s door seemed a bit preposterous.
The door, by estimation, was a staggering twenty meters tall, too immense for either a display of power or a simple majestic spectacle.
Lu Ban looked inside and noticed some peculiar things.
There were steps within the building, with each stair much taller than a normal person; Lu Ban would even need to use his hands and feet to possibly climb them.
The grey-white, marble-like tables also towered over Lu Ban. Walking around here, Lu Ban felt like a resident of a small town who had strayed into the human world.
Everything here seemed as if time had frozen, as though the inhabitants were living normally one moment and disappeared the next.
Lu Ban and Charlotte proceeded up the stairs.
Lu Ban climbed.
Charlotte walked up as if stepping on air.
Upon reaching a platform, Lu Ban looked down, panting.
It appeared to be a large hall for handling affairs, though he was unsure whom it served.
Charlotte stood next to Lu Ban and said nonchalantly.
“Do you now see what’s different about the Splendid Realm and your Foreign Domain?”
Lu Ban looked at the woman in the cheongsam.
He had almost understood the answer.
Lu Ban pointed out that through the windows of the building, one could see the densely packed statues outside.
He had always thought that these were the houses where the people of the Splendid Realm lived, weathered over the years into their current state.
But now, having witnessed the scene here, Lu Ban felt his initial thoughts were wrong.
Those were not dilapidated buildings.
Those were people.
The corpses of the residents of the Splendid Realm.
The “humans” of this Foreign Domain, in stature and size, were much larger compared to humans like Lu Ban.
Those things that spread across this world, like monuments to civilization, were once the masters of this Foreign Domain’s ancient civilization.
