Chapter 643: 642. I have something to tell you_1 Chapter 643: 642. I have something to tell you_1 “You say Gaude’s innards vanished into thin air?”
Bronning seemed to be thinking, as he countered with a question but didn’t wait for Lu Ban or Shia’s answer before murmuring to himself.
“My corpse has characteristics of a Sludge Monster, capable of absorbing other people’s souls and mimicking the corresponding person. After being attacked by me, did it shed its own organs and transform into someone else?”
“But you must have already met everyone at Storm Villa. No matter who it wants to turn into, it would be noticeable, unless… it turned into someone who didn’t originally belong here.”
Bronning looked at Lu Ban and Shia.
“Have you also encountered someone who wasn’t here from the start?”
The thunder roared at that moment, and trees in the distance seemed to be struck by lightning again, bursting into fierce flames, shining brightly in the pitch-black night, reflected against the deep purple lightning, as if it was the end of the world.
“Yes, his name is Byron, a street swindler. He obtained a few pages of your writings and gained Superpower Ability. Gaude invited him here, but he ended up locked in a wine barrel in the underground cellar,”
Shia briefly explained the situation they had encountered.
“Now, Byron is with our companions, under careful watch.”
Upon hearing this, a serious and murky expression spread across Bronning’s face.
“This is bad.”
Bronning sighed, then said.
“This Byron is probably a manifestation of my corpse, and Gaude represents a different manifestation of the same soul. After being killed by me, it hid as Byron, waiting for an opportunity. Now, your companions are likely in contact with him, and he might be deceiving them with flowery words, trying to find my existence to complete The Conjuring ritual.”
At Bronning’s words, Shia raised an eyebrow.
So far, Bronning’s words had been logical and consistent. The Soul Summoning Night was indeed carried out by Gaude and Byron, and there were indeed many suspicious points surrounding them. Since the task was to survive the Soul Summoning Night, Byron, as an unstable element, needed to be dealt with carefully.
However, who could guarantee that the present Taoist Crane Cry would not harm them?
Of course, endless suspicion leads nowhere. It only results in hesitation and not being able to move forward.
“What do you want us to do?”
Lu Ban asked directly.
Now, their only option was to help Taoist Crane Cry, and if it came down to it, they could deal with him after his issues were resolved.
Since he said his Sublimation had encountered problems, Lu Ban thought that giving him a song sung by an Ancient Overlord might make him more compliant.
“It’s quite simple. Find Byron, use this to turn him into stone, and then bring him to me.”
Bronning traced his fingers through the air, his fingertip leaving a trail like a shooting star, a character appeared midair, and with a wave of his hand, that thing floated toward Lu Ban and Shia.
The text hovered in front of them, and Shia quickly figured out how to use it.
“Is this knowledge?”
Shia looked at Bronning.
“Yes.”
Bronning nodded slightly. This was knowledge made manifest, simply touching it would allow the information to flow into the brain naturally, and along with it, pollution would follow as a consequence.
“If I wanted to harm you, your bodies and consciousness would have been under my control the moment you saw me. There would be no need to make a move at this stage.”
He added, indicating his lack of malice.
“I’ll go first.”
With the thought that he wasn’t afraid of such things, and at worst, he would just melt, Lu Ban reached out to touch the luminescent text floating in midair.
The moment his fingertip touched the text, Lu Ban felt a fine stream of something flowing into his brain.
The tingly sensation on his scalp lasted for a moment, and Lu Ban almost immediately sensed knowledge surfacing in his mind.
It was a simple ritual, yet it could inflict great trauma on the Sludge Monsters. Once the ritual succeeded, the stricken Sludge Monsters would become as hard as cemented Glass Flowers, ready to be moved by anyone.
These Sludge Monsters were not dead, but rather, they seemed sealed.
“Taoist Crane Cry being able to master such a spell gives us reason to believe he indeed can control the Sludge Monsters,”
Shia whispered into Lu Ban’s ear.
“Indeed,”
Lu Ban nodded as Shia touched the text, enduring this, she obviously suffered more, her facial expression slightly distorted. The young Mage closed her eyes, and then opened them as if contemplating the nature of the sealing spell.
“This spell is quite simple, it only requires touching the opponent, but conversely, if Byron becomes aware of this, he may turn around and attack us first,”
Shia quickly said.
They had already seen those evolved Sludge Monsters in the Abandoned Capital ten years ago, a mere gaze was enough to cause one’s internal organs to burst forth, transforming into Glass Flowers.
After ten years, no one knew what the Sludge Monsters had evolved into.
Lu Ban and Shia moved the old butler out of the spirit hall and laid him down in the next room, then prepared to go directly to Byron’s room.
However, before doing so, they wanted to discuss with Stone first, as no one knew what Stone and Byron had said to each other.
As soon as they reached the corridor where that room was located, they saw Stone coming towards them.
Lu Ban noticed that Stone had a solemn expression, as if he had just learned some serious news.
“I have something to tell you,”
Stone said with utmost seriousness.
“What a coincidence, we also have something to tell you,”
Lu Ban responded.
The three of them exchanged looks. Outside, the torrential rain continued unabated, producing an extremely harsh noise that drowned out most of the whispered conversations.
“You might not believe it, but I encountered Taoist Crane Cry,”
Stone said soberly.
“We believe you,”
Lu Ban immediately assured.
“Don’t be hasty. The one I encountered may not be the true Taoist Crane Cry. He said that there is the will of Taoist Crane Cry within Storm Villa. It is that will of Taoist Crane Cry that is trying to destroy his own flesh and, when the time of Soul Summoning Night comes, the will of Taoist Crane Cry will kill us,”
Stone briefly explained.
Shia and Lu Ban glanced at each other.
“Byron is Taoist Crane Cry. He merged himself with the Sludge Monsters, trying to become an Ancient Overlord. He was thwarted by a true Ancient Overlord, the ruler of Abandoned Capital, and a part of his soul was bound within Storm Villa. That is the source of the anomalies we’ve encountered,”
Stone added.
Hearing Stone’s words, Shia and Lu Ban glanced at each other again.
“You might not believe what I’m about to say,”
Lu Ban said solemnly to Stone.
“We also met Taoist Crane Cry. He told us almost the same thing, only it is exactly the opposite, that the body of Taoist Crane Cry is the true culprit behind the Soul Summoning Night.”
“?”
Stone felt something was off.
