Chapter 634: 633. French military salute_1 Chapter 634: 633. French military salute_1 The man had a weathered look, and Lu Ban didn’t recognize him; he clearly didn’t recognize Lu Ban and the others either.
“Are you Byron?”
Stone maintained a distance from the man, with his revolver still aimed at Byron.
“Yes, I’m Byron, I’m in charge of managing Mr. Bronning’s Soul Summoning Night, invited for this task.”
The man said, staring at the dark muzzle of Stone’s gun, hands raised high, giving a French military salute.
“How did you end up hiding inside a barrel?”
Shia asked directly.
“I don’t know, I was on my way here by car, fell asleep on the way, and when I woke up, I found myself trapped in a barrel. No matter how much I yelled, nobody responded until you guys showed up, which is really great.”
Byron smiled, his teeth white in stark contrast to his appearance.
Hearing this obviously dodgy explanation, Stone glanced at Lu Ban and Shia.
“According to my search, Gaude’s internal organs are inside him.”
“What? Mr. Gaude?”
Byron, puzzled, asked with a look of confusion.
“Inside me, how is that possible?”
“Are you a descendant of Taoist Crane Cry?”
Stone was ready to pull the trigger, to be honest, he hadn’t expected to find Byron so quickly. Logically, Byron should be the main culprit, and if he wanted to complete the mission, the simplest way would be to figure out how to kill Byron. Without Taoist Crane Cry’s descendant, there would be no summoning. They would just have to wait till the ninth day, and the mission would be automatically completed, sweet.
“Kind of, uh, no no no, I don’t consider myself one. As you know, the affairs of Taoist Crane Cry are taboo in the Abandoned Capital. I’ve only dabbled in some of his basics, learned a few tricks, really. In fact, I’m just an actor hired by Mr. Gaude to pretend.”
Byron hurriedly explained, pulling out some papers from his slightly worn clothes.
“Mr. Gaude told me to pretend to be a disciple of Taoist Crane Cry and conduct the Soul Summoning Night ritual, and on the final day, present Mr. Bronning’s Testament using the tricks I know to make his children dispose of this villa cheaply. Once he took over smoothly, he promised me a hefty income.”
Lu Ban took the papers from him. Although the papers seemed blank, Lu Ban saw the special marks; with a special solvent, the writing would appear—a classic feudal deception.
“Isn’t he afraid of you being exposed?”
Shia asked with a slight frown.
She didn’t feel threatened by the man before her, at least the mage’s intuition told her his danger was less than that of a jackal.
“Mr. Gaude said he’d corroborate my story, act as my plant. Plus, although I’m just a common mage, I’ve really inherited a part of Taoist Crane Cry’s mantle, like this.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Byron snapped his fingers.
At his fingertips, sparks appeared; brief, yes, but certainly not something a common person could do.
“I found a page of Taoist Crane Cry’s writings, which contained a few simple spells. I tried them out and quickly learned them. It’s with this that I’ve been able to collaborate with Mr. Gaude.”
“When was the last time you saw Mr. Gaude?”
Stone reached into the pocket of his double-breasted coat and slowly gripped the magnifying glass.
Swarms of whispering thoughts entered Stone’s mind, and since he had experienced many similar situations before, he was able to keep them isolated from his consciousness.
Supernatural powers spread over his brain like a web, and at the same time, Stone, like a spider ready to pounce, peered into Byron’s thoughts.
“It was before coming here. He prepared some clothes for me, told me some details to pay attention to, and then he left by car ahead of me. According to Mr. Gaude, we couldn’t arrive at the same time.”
Byron spoke very sincerely, glancing again at the muzzle of Stone’s revolver.
“Brother, can you put that thing down for a moment? It makes me nervous.”
Stone holstered his revolver and continued with his questions.
“You said you were asleep inside the barrel, calling for help all the while, but why didn’t you react just now?”
Clearly, when the three of them had walked into the wine cellar, Byron hadn’t made any sound.
“People get tired, you know. I was so sleepy that I fell asleep again. If it hadn’t been for the noise just now, I might still be asleep.”
Byron said jokingly, trying to step forward but, seeing the expression on Shia’s face next to him, he obediently stepped back to where he originally was.
“Mr. Gaude is already dead.”
Lu Ban suddenly spoke up, causing Stone to look at his companion.
Originally, Stone hadn’t planned on informing Byron about Mr. Gaude’s death. He wanted to use it as a baseline to draw out information, to see if Byron would reveal any slips or give himself away, but he didn’t expect Lu Ban to blurt out the information so directly.
“What? Mr. Gaude is already dead?”
Byron looked astonished. He glanced at each of the three in turn, his gaze finally resting on Lu Ban, who had informed him of the news.
“Is it true? Wait, why would Mr. Gaude die? Isn’t this just an ordinary funeral?”
At this moment, Lu Ban very seriously, quite formally, patted Byron on the shoulder.
“In fact, you are the one who killed Mr. Gaude. We believe you may have dual personalities. While you were unconscious, you killed Mr. Gaude and hid here. We are detectives, and I hope you will cooperate with our investigation.”
“???”
Byron found it hard to believe.
“Me? Dual personalities? I killed Mr. Gaude? You must be joking.”
“No, Mr. Byron, we are professional detectives and we do not joke. According to some special investigative methods, we found that you consumed Mr. Gaude’s internal organs. Following the trail of the organs, we found this place.”
Lu Ban said without hesitation.
Upon hearing this, Byron’s eyes widened.
“What are you saying? I consumed…ugh….”
He seemed to feel a surge in his throat, gagged twice, and then coughed vigorously as if trying to vomit something out from his stomach.
Watching Byron’s reaction, the three looked at each other.
“Mr. Gaude’s organs are indeed inside his body,” Stone said simply.
“But what he says is not a lie; I can see in his words the experiences he has been through.”
“We now have two choices,” Shia raised two fingers.
“First, we can simply finish him off. He may be a mimic formed by the Sludge Monster, or he might truly be an innocent scapegoat. But killing him first would certainly simplify our problems.”
“Second, we keep him and ask for more information. He might truly have been imprisoned here for some special reason, and he could even be the key to resolving this issue.”
As soon as he heard Shia’s words, Byron instantly raised his hands.
“Please wait, I’ll talk, I’ll tell you everything. I really didn’t kill Gaude, nor did I eat him! I am innocent!”
