Chapter 628: 627. Had a nightmare?_1 Chapter 628: 627. Had a nightmare?_1 According to Lily, Bronning had needed her services throughout many recent evenings, but on the night of his death, he did not ask for her company and instead went to sleep in the room by himself.

It was as if he had already known he would die that night.

In other circumstances, this might have been considered a coincidence, but in the Foreign Domain, and especially since Bronning was under the influence of Taoist Crane Cry’s power, it definitely indicated some form of extraordinary interference.

“Did he say anything else to you that night?”

Shia asked.

“No… He just told me not to disturb him, very sternly.”

Lily answered, appearing quite perplexed.

“Were you very frightened?”

Stone noticed the look in Lily’s eyes and inquired.

“I don’t know… Mr. Gaude is dead too, and we can’t leave now. The person who killed Mr. Gaude, will he kill us as well? No, others want to kill me too, you have to save me…”

Lily felt the murmurs in her ears resonating once again, causing her a bout of headache as she furrowed her brows.

“Don’t worry, he can’t hurt you.”

Stone reassured her.

“Wait a second, you said others also want to kill you, why would they want to kill you? You’re just a lover, without any formal status or right to the inheritance, you’re insignificant to them, easily dismissed with money.”

Lu Ban suddenly said, leaving Lily momentarily at a loss.

“I don’t know, I…”

Her head suddenly hurt terribly, and she clutched her head, curling up again.

“Stop pressing her.”

Stone got up, leading Lu Ban and Shia to the doorway.

“Her fear has likely been amplified. Under such circumstances, she might experience excessive fear, which could lead to an overreaction.”

Stone spoke in a voice only the three of them could hear.

“From her testimony, it appears Bronning had a premonition of his own death and, moreover, he seemed to have some other thoughts about death. The fact that ‘The Conjuring’ was part of his will, it’s hard not to assume he delved into matters far deeper than we can comprehend.”

“Indeed.”

Lu Ban agreed.

Shia glanced back at Lily, who was still shivering in the room, her gaze fixed on the three of them like a child in a crowd desperately following their mother with their eyes.

“She needs to be moved to another room, it’s no longer safe for her to stay here.”

After speaking with the maid, by the time Lily had changed rooms, the chimes of midnight had already rung.

Having returned to their own rooms, Stone didn’t bother with a bath but simply lay down on his bed.

He closed his eyes, and the sound of the wind and rain outside the window was incessant, but over time, it became a sort of comforting background noise, like the rhythmic clanging sound of a train passing over the joints in the tracks, lulling one to sleep.

Stone placed the pistol under his pillow, his hand reaching in to grasp it as he lay on his side to sleep. That way, if trouble arose, he could grab the revolver and shoot immediately.

Although as a Chosen by Gods capable of reaching Sublimation-level missions, Stone possessed his own extraordinary powers and could instantaneously wake and react even while asleep, he still maintained this habit, a vestige of his days in the gang, back when he was merely a mortal.

Back then, enemies might launch a midnight ambush, rattling off a storm of gunfire with their typewriter-like submachine guns into the house—without some form of defense, he would have died countless times by now.

His eyes had not yet fully closed when Stone sensed a whisper at his ear.

“They don’t trust you, they think you killed Cui Siter. You wanted to kill them once, they won’t forgive you.”

“Kill them, you can uncover the secrets within this villa on your own, the secrets of Taoist Crane Cry, the secret of immortality.”

“Just use that power, everyone here will die, nobody will know what happened, you can take the inheritance back to Abandoned Capital, you don’t need to put yourself in danger for these people.”

“Do you really think doing this will atone for the sins you’ve committed? No, you can never wash away your past mistakes, you will be imprisoned in this cage for a lifetime. Since that’s the case, why deceive yourself? Embrace your true self, you know, you’ve always been that kind of person.”

These ephemeral words overlapped and echoed around Stone’s ears, causing him to furrow his brows, to struggle faintly, yet unable to wake.

In a trance, Stone felt he was back in that cramped room. He sat on the bed with a lit cigarette in his hand, while a frail girl lay sleeping beside him. They were strangers brought together by fate, and inexplicably developed feelings that didn’t belong in the dark world beneath the Abandoned Capital Sewer. Stone wanted to change the underworld, to see for himself whether behind the gloomy skies, the sun truly existed.

He then found himself in the Godfather’s office, a man of authority who exploited everything around him; he created monsters to achieve longevity. He played his schemes so well that even his own children could become pawns and bargaining chips. There was only one thing he miscalculated—he killed someone he shouldn’t have.

In his delirium, Stone returned to the hospital. At that time, he was covered in wounds, having lost even the most important things to him. He stood at the door of Cui Siter’s room. His initial intention was to take revenge on the man, to avenge Liz. But when he entered the room, the man, seeing him, didn’t attack but rather chatted with him like a friend. Stone hesitated, he wavered, he decided to observe this man—a vigil that lasted for a long time, until the man was gone forever.

All the memories, along with the delirious murmurs, penetrated Stone’s head, making him at times anxious, at times angry, at times sad, and at times bewildered.

Then, sensing some kind of threat, with his intuition surging, he woke up.

In an instant, Stone drew the revolver from under his pillow and, without hesitation, raised it and fired.

Boom—

The bullet hit some soft, squishy body. Stone wanted to keep pulling the trigger, but his finger wouldn’t move.

“?”

Stone was stunned. He saw another hand grasping his own, a finger jamming his trigger, rendering it immovable.

And the muzzle of his own revolver was pointed at his temple.

The bullet, blocked by the hand at the muzzle, left a mess of blood and flesh, and it even seemed like some grass was growing in it.

Stone now saw his predicament.

He sat on the bed, revolver pointed at his own head. The first bullet he fired was stopped by this hand, barely grazing his skin. If not for the other party, Stone might have ended up shooting himself.

He looked forward, at the owner of the hand, Lu Ban.

“Having a nightmare?”

A smile tugged at the corners of Lu Ban’s mouth.
