Chapter 627: 626. Script level_1 Chapter 627: 626. Script level_1 The storm grew fiercer, and with every flash of lightning, Stone’s face disappeared into the darkness, only to be suddenly illuminated again. Outside, the sound of a torrent erupted from the clifftops, the muddy deluge sweeping away trees and leaving the forest animals with no escape from disaster. Ice-cold rain pelted the glass with a terrifyingly loud impact, as if in the next moment, the droplets would transform into hailstones, shattering the glass and bringing the chill into the corridors.
In such weather, sleep was utterly impossible.
In her room, Lily curled up in bed, unable to sleep. Ever since she had learned of Gaude’s death, Lily had been filled with fear. She couldn’t control the trembling sensation, her inner terror magnified to the point that she couldn’t even think clearly.
Boom—
A clap of thunder exploded in the sky, and Lily quickly covered her ears, curling into a ball. Her throat felt dry and nauseous, as if something alive was writhing within her stomach, trying to crawl out of her mouth.
Fighting back the urge to vomit, Lily’s eyes were bloodshot, her muscles spasmed, her fear so acute she couldn’t even feel the pain.
Knock, knock, knock—
There was a knocking at the door, but Lily couldn’t hear it; she just wanted to find a hole to hide in on this stormy night.
Knock, knock, knock—
The knocking persisted, accompanied by calls.
Those calls penetrated Lily’s ears, turning into low whispers.
“They’re going to kill you, you’re a threat to them, think about Gaude, they’re capable of it!”
“The Bronning family are no good, remember how you became what you are now, you should have had a better future.”
“Strike first before they do, otherwise you’ll be the one who dies!”
“You can’t do anything, you can only die meekly in this room!”
These murmurs echoed in Lily’s ears, stacking upon one another and swaying her will, preventing her from thinking.
Knock, knock, knock—
This time, the knocking was louder, impossible for Lily to ignore.
She looked towards the door in terror, instinctively leaning back until her spine touched the hard headboard, where she felt a semblance of safety.
A bolt of lightning struck down, and Lily covered her ears again, a wave of nausea rising to her throat, making her dizzy.
Suddenly, all noise ceased.
It was an eerie silence, like a classroom without a teacher, where students were bustling with whispers, and then at a certain moment, everyone suddenly fell quiet.
Lily was slow to react at first, but as she noticed the quiet, another wave of noise exploded.
Bang—
Lily saw her room door flung open violently, the heavy wooden door now as frail as paper in that moment. She thought a legendary giant had barged into her room.
But it wasn’t any giant.
Lily saw a woman cloaked in a mantle dusting off her hands, walking into the room.
“It looks like there’s no problem.”
Shia swiftly picked up the door that had been blown away and fallen to one side, placing it back in its original position.
Of course, since the bolt was completely broken, the door could not be fitted back as it was.
So, the door was simply left leaning there.
“I was beginning to think something had happened to you too, but it looks like you were just frightened out of your wits.”
Shia had no sympathy for the girl, approaching Lemon like a small animal and picking her up directly.
“Don’t, don’t kill me!”
Lemon immediately covered her eyes with her hands.
“No one is going to kill you, little girl. We just want to ask you a few questions.”
Shia said, making Lemon somewhat doubtfully remove her hands from her eyes and look at Shia suspiciously.
“We want to ask you how Mr. Bronning managed to sleep with you.”
Lu Ban spoke bluntly.
The maid behind him, upon hearing this, immediately covered her mouth, turned her face away, appearing unwilling to listen to the conversation that followed.
“Ahem.”
Stone wanted Lu Ban to be less direct. He cleared his throat to signal the maid by the door to step back a little.
“Miss Lily, we would like to understand what kind of person Mr. Bronning was.”
He then spoke using a classic discussion opener.
“Him?”
Lily didn’t react for a moment, not understanding Stone’s intent in her state of shock.
Now that someone had died, why were they still concerned about Bronning? It’s not like he could rise from his coffin and kill someone!
“You know, Mr. Gaude is dead, he was murdered. The cause of all this is Mr. Bronning’s inheritance, or rather, the inheritance left in this house by Taoist Crane Cry. Mr. Lorne and Miss Emma did not live with Mr. Bronning on a daily basis and have a limited understanding of their own father’s situation. But you, Miss Lily, you have been in constant contact with Mr. Bronning lately. You know him the best, and we would like to talk to you about it. Don’t worry, we are here, and no one will be able to hurt you.”
Stone reassured her.
Lily, hearing Stone’s words, gradually calmed down.
She managed to stop shaking slightly, and the echoes of dull murmurs lingering in her ears seemed to fade away. She found a moment of tranquility.
This allowed Lily to think a little more clearly. She glanced at Stone, who looked quite reliable. This detective in his thirties didn’t seem as rough and straightforward as Lu Ban, nor as violent and fearsome as Shia, who had burst in at the beginning.
“Mr. Bronning, he was a decent person. I mean, he wasn’t particular about many details. When I was still a maid, yes, I used to be his personal maid, responsible for helping him change his clothes and bathe, and most of the time he was very gentlemanly. Not like some of the other masters I’ve heard of, those who liked to take liberties.”
Lily recalled and spoke.
Her speech began to grow more coherent, as if her memories were slowly reviving, and she could even mention details that wouldn’t usually be mentioned under normal circumstances.
For instance, she pointed out that Bronning had a surgical scar on his flank, which was a relic from a gang attack.
She would also mention that Bronning liked sweets, preferred sugared black tea with butter cookies for afternoon tea, but sometimes he would have tea with many slices of lemon and sour grapes.
Although Bronning was quite gentlemanly most of the time, he was very rough in bed and had certain violent tendencies.
Lu Ban noticed that while Stone was asking questions, his other hand was always in his pocket. Through Lu Ban’s “True Sight,” he could see that there was a magnifying glass in Stone’s jacket pocket. While asking questions, Stone’s hand continuously fiddled with the handle of the magnifying glass, which seemed like an artifact from “The Silent Land.”
“…right, there’s one more thing,”
Lily seemed to have remembered the last point and spoke.
“Before Mr. Bronning died, he was supposed to sleep in my room. But that day, he chose to sleep alone. The next morning, the servants found that he had passed away.”
