I Forged the Myth of the Ancient Overlords -
Chapter 612 - 612 Inheritance_1
Chapter 612: Inheritance_1 Chapter 612: Inheritance_1 Following the voice, Lu Ban saw Shia.
She looked rather haggard, her complexion pale as if she had not eaten for several days. She was still wearing that heavy suit of armor, which now bore some shocking battle scars. It was hard to imagine what kind of battle, even under the protection of magic, could have inflicted such marks.
Fortunately, upon seeing Lu Ban, a glimmer of light returned to Shia’s eyes.
“I was investigating an incident involving heretical cultists and was attacked. The adversaries summoned a member of the Evil God’s kin of a certain stature, which took some time to deal with,”
Shia explained, noticing Lu Ban’s gaze.
“Where is this place?”
Lu Ban, not sure if Shia had arrived before him, asked.
The hall seemed to be used for entertaining guests. On the wall opposite, there hung a painting that Lu Ban recognized very well; it depicted a scene from the “Shadow of Terror” in the Ancient Capital, where a sinister shadow spread within the bodies of people, both shocking and eerie.
If the seals under the Ancient Capital’s control weakened, this painting alone could attract dangerous monsters.
Seeing it so openly displayed here implied that the Ancient Capital was, at least for the time being, without any issues.
Still, it was rather peculiar for the homeowner to adorn the reception area with such an item.
“This place should be that mansion,”
Shia remarked, surveying the surroundings before standing and casting a Detection Spell casually.
After a moment, she turned her gaze toward the closed door.
“Someone is coming.”
The next instant, a knock was heard at the door.
A man entered as the door was pushed open. Lu Ban saw it was an old butler, dressed in a neat suit, wearing a monocle, and sporting a slicked-back hairdo—he clearly seemed practiced in his duties.
“My master invites the two guests over,”
said the old butler, bowing to them and then speaking.
“Alright,”
Lu Ban and Shia exchanged a look, then stood and followed the butler.
The mansion was indeed very ancient, with walls and columns exuding a musty, decayed scent as if they had been soaked in water for an extended period, soft and moldy to the touch.
The corridor’s decor was simple and rustic, not as shocking as the drawing room, but still, one could occasionally see paintings depicting the spooky scenery from the works of the Ancient Capital.
“Does your master fancy the Ancient Capital’s works?”
Lu Ban suddenly asked.
“The master was very fond of collecting rarities while he was alive, and naturally, the works of Mr. Ancient Capital are precious,”
the butler replied without looking back, his tone polite and refined.
“Are they valuable?”
Lu Ban wasn’t quite sure; he only knew that the works from the Ancient Capital were bestsellers, but he was not aware of who the artist was or their significance.
“Mr. Ancient Capital has been quiet for many years, and there aren’t many authentic pieces left in the world anymore. These paintings are created by renowned painters for Mr. Ancient Capital, and they are quite valuable,”
the butler explained.
“Many years?”
Shia sounded puzzled; she seemed to have thought of something but restrained herself from speaking out loud.
They didn’t walk long before the two of them arrived in a room resembling a dining hall.
The room was larger than the previous one, with a long table surrounded by a few people. A gigantic crystal chandelier hung from the towering dome of the restaurant, sparkling brightly and making the gloomy, ancient mansion seem much more luminous.
Yet, the restaurant still emitted a dampness as if freshly salvaged from the seabed, adding to the grandeur of the hall a sense of gloom and desolation.
There were windows in the dining hall, and Lu Ban cast a casual glance outside, to a lush forest. Despite the intense sunlight, the dense woods still gave off an oppressive feeling, suffocating in their density.
Had it not been for the view, Lu Ban might have thought that the mansion was situated underwater, perhaps where a Dragon King dined in captivity.
He turned his gaze back inside the room.
There were four people in the room.
One of them, a middle-aged man, stood by the window. He was dressed in a respectable suit, a gold chain stretching from his pocket to inside of his waistcoat. He cautiously observed the others in the room, occasionally pulling out a pocket watch connected to the gold chain, even though there was an imposing clock on the wall of the restaurant.
A young woman sat near the head of the table. She was young and pretty, with light makeup and a body-hugging plain cheongsam. When she saw the butler leading Lu Ban and Shia in, she subconsciously bit her lower lip, gazing over with the hurt look of a small animal.
A man, around fifty, lounged on a sofa nearby. His suit hung loosely on him, giving off a dissolute air. His hair was as messy as seaweed, but he had a robust build, like a bull. Upon seeing Lu Ban and Shia enter, he narrowed his eyes slightly, as if sizing them up.
The last person was a sophisticated lady, attempting to hide the traces of her aging with makeup. Draped in a fur coat, she was holding a fan, sitting directly opposite the head of the table. When she noticed Lu Ban, her eyes lit up, but she quickly covered her expression with her fan.
The butler quickly introduced these individuals to Lu Ban and Shia.
The man with the pocket watch was called Lorne, the deceased’s eldest son. He ran a tobacco business in Abandoned Capital and was quite wealthy.
The young woman was Lily, the deceased’s lover. Initially just a maid taking care of the deceased, she, for various reasons, became the mistress and was now most feared by the deceased’s children.
The fifty-year-old man was Gaude, the deceased’s business partner and friend. He ostensibly came to mourn the deceased, but his true purpose was unknown.
Finally, the sophisticated lady was Aima, the deceased’s eldest daughter, known for her luxurious and unruly lifestyle, mingling with young and handsome men, clearly here for the inheritance.
“We’re only missing two people now, then we’ll all be here,”
the butler said, glancing at the others.
“Who are we still waiting for?”
Lu Ban asked.
“Well, Master Byron in charge of the ritual and a detective from the Trieste Detective Agency,”
the butler answered.
Hearing the response, Lu Ban gave a slight nod.
Setting aside Trieste for the moment, the Master Byron responsible for the ritual was presumably the heir of the Crane Cry Sect. This mission did not require investigation, only survival until the end of the Soul Summoning Night, and the difficulty of Sublimation suggested that there might be phenomena related to the Ancient Overlord. Therefore, Lu Ban deduced that this Master Byron was likely the most crucial figure for this mission.
After a brief wait, as if sensing something, the butler left the dining hall with measured steps. Shortly after, he returned, leading someone in.
“Allow me to introduce everyone, this is the great detective from the Trieste Detective Agency,”
the butler announced.
The other four gave the newcomer a deep look, all showing expressions of either caution or awe.
Only Lu Ban and Shia had grave expressions upon seeing the great detective,
because that person was not Trieste.
