Chapter 541: 540. Choose to believe in hope_1 Chapter 541: 540. Choose to believe in hope_1 “Regretted it.”

Yang Yiwu looked at the screen on his laptop, feeling some regret for showing this movie to the students.

It was a case of life imitating art: people suffering in the movie, people suffering outside the movie, super-sized suffering, so to speak.

Volcanic eruptions, tsunamis spreading, typhoons passing, watching the opening scenes, although Yang Yiwu thought the special effects were indeed impressive, wasn’t the plot a bit too tragic?

During his university days, Yang Yiwu had seen disaster-themed movies depicting sinking ships, the Statue of Liberty frozen, Yellowstone Park’s volcano erupting, but never all at once.

He was a bit worried that these images might affect the students’ mental health.

Yet, turning his head, Yang Yiwu found the children with their eyes wide, engrossed in the movie, even more focused than when in class.

He had nothing to say.

In the movie, after several disasters occurred, people began to gather global strength to research the causes. There was no detailed research process because the geological movements were too complex; they could only conclude that even larger disasters might be coming.

Then, the perspective shifted to a cluttered office filled with documents and materials, where a man woke up to the sound of a ringing phone. He picked it up, instantly declined a merchandise sales pitch, but soon, the voice on the phone made his sleepy eyes rapidly widen.

“What? Now? Teacher, you’re not joking?”

The man glanced out the window and noticed a black luxury sedan already parked below.

Gathering his belongings, the man got into the car. The person sitting in the passenger seat was his teacher, and en route, Yang Yiwu learned the man’s name and about his research topic: the connection between human consciousness and robot consciousness.

“You said my research had no practical value, so, why think of me now?”

The man still had a flippant demeanor.

“If you only want to use machinery to resurrect your daughter, of course, that’s worthless. We need you to delve into deeper matters.”

The teacher murmured.

The man’s expression froze, memories unfolded—the images of him holding his daughter who died in an accident, and the flashbacks of building artificial intelligence based on his daughter’s brain.

Yang Yiwu, who hadn’t seen the trailer before, didn’t know that the daughter appearing in the man’s memory was Lin in the ecological park.

Having reached his destination in the deep mountains, the man took a plane.

The students envied the plane, and Yang Yiwu smiled slightly. Which boy hadn’t dreamt of planes as a child?

Along the way, various explanations helped Yang Yiwu understand that the man had been summoned to respond to the previous disasters. They would be a group of elite scientists and scholars researching to save the world.

The plane landed in a city whose roofs were solar panels, with robots sweeping the streets—a cutting-edge high-tech appearance. It was said to have once been a demonstration real estate project for a company, but now it had been taken over by a joint committee of several countries and turned into a place for these researchers and engineers to live.

The man was assigned housing, followed others to the nearby industrial park, and several characters made their appearances.

With the research footage switching, Yang Yiwu roughly knew that some were astronomers researching wormholes that appeared in deserts, some were biologists and medical scientists researching biological mutations, and others were scholars like him in robotics and artificial intelligence.

It seemed that humanity had already begun to prepare to combat the disasters.

The storm outside seemed to have intensified. Yang Yiwu glanced at the window, which was being pelted fiercely, checked for any damage, and looked into the distance. The streetlights had disappeared, and it was pitch black, just the storm raging, as if he were in a post-Doomsday world.

Sitting back down, the man also finished his first day’s meeting and work distribution and returned to his residence before going out to eat.

It was a bustling commercial street, with robots playing the piano, and people from all over the world gathering here, facing a global disaster.

The TV in the noodle shop continued to show the disasters unfolding. An earthquake swept through an Island Country, the entire island trembling and sinking into the ocean—it was chilling.

The man next to him, a researcher, praised the noodles, saying they were just like the ones he had at home. The man was curious and asked why he could be so relaxed in such a hopeless situation.

“We’ve gathered the world’s strength here. We are the hope of the entire world. If we don’t choose to believe in hope, then there’s definitely no saving this world,”

the other replied, then finished his noodle soup, paid, and left.

The man walked down the street and came across a botanical garden, which he entered. The garden was filled with mechanical animals, the pinnacle of artificial intelligence technology.

Suddenly, the man thought about whether his daughter could stay here. He approached the committee’s responsible person, and although they felt it was futile for saving the world, they couldn’t stand against the man’s insistence and transported his “daughter,” the robot, to the botanical garden.

The man programmed some data into his “daughter,” making her act as a guide in the ecological park. To him, the scenes of her playing with the animal machines felt as though his own daughter had come back to life.

However, the man knew all too well it was only a machine, one that mimicked his daughter’s every move to the greatest extent possible.

Nevertheless, everyone liked the girl very much. Visiting the ecological park to relax had become a daily lesson for many researchers, and the man’s research continued.

Seeing this made Yang Yiwu feel touched. Back when he was at the university, he also loved to go to the campus square in the evening, sitting on a bench listening to the songs from the broadcast, watching people come and go.

That was how he rested his mind.

Everyone gets tired sometimes, and being able to relax at that moment is more refreshing than anything.

It seemed to get even colder. The students huddled together to keep warm, much like the humans in the movies.

Yang Yiwu suddenly felt that humans like these could overcome any difficulty, withstand any calamity.

“Cold?”

he asked a student beside him.

“No,”

the student shook their head, while burrowing their neck deeper into their blanket.

The charcoal fire cracked as sparks flew. The movie screen showed the vast expanse of space and a giant eye of a storm forming over the ocean. The camera slowly moved towards the tempest, piercing through the clouds with flashes of lightning, arriving above the sea churned by torrential rain and rolling waves, where a large ship was bucking. In a moment, the ship capsized, its lights dimming slowly as it sank into the depths.

The shot rose above, back to the surface where people were struggling, their cries incessant.

Suddenly, the storm around seemed to cease, as if the storm had passed.

But before the people could cheer, a spread of white crept over the sea.

This was within the eye of the storm, the coldest part.

The temperature here even dropped below freezing, and snowflakes began to fall on the ocean’s surface.

In an instant, the floating and sinking people were frozen, their facial expressions immobilized.

One mother with a child, realizing the situation, desperately swam outward, trying to reach the raging storm.

But she couldn’t swim past the typhoon, freezing on the water’s surface. When she saw she couldn’t escape, the mother pushed her child hard, trying to get them onto the still-thawed sea surface.

Even so, her efforts were futile. In the moment the child looked back, their body and expression were already fixed, becoming an ice sculpture.

Watching the scenes in the movie, Yang Yiwu felt even colder.
