Seeing this, Lu Ban suddenly raised his hand and materialized a silver pen “Testament” in his hand, and wrote a few words on He Jiaoyang’s forehead.
“Invisible.”
He Jiaoyang suddenly felt as if darkness had descended around him; whether it was the kitty on the coffee table, the gaping maw on Lu Ban’s shoulder, or the abyssal Lu Ban himself, all vanished from sight.
His burning sanity also cooled down, and He Jiaoyang felt nauseated. The lamb skewer he had just eaten seemed to writhe in his stomach like living flesh, leaving his throat parched.
“What’s wrong with me?”
Groping around blindly, He Jiaoyang’s vision suddenly returned.
He dared not look at Lu Ban, focusing only on the barbecue instead.
Thankfully, these barbecues seemed to be normal.
Grilled garlic chives, fried pig’s lungs, roasted lamb skewers, grilled pork buns, grilled beef tallow, grilled baby vegetables—He Jiaoyang started counting the barbecue items, trying to distract himself.
He was hungry.
“It’s okay now, I made it so you can’t see for now.”
Lu Ban patted He Jiaoyang on the shoulder.
He looked up at Lu Ban.
The things on the coffee table and on his shoulder were gone, and Lu Ban had returned to his handsome self.
“Tell me why you were looking for me?”
Lu Ban then handed He Jiaoyang a grilled pork bun.
“Eat something spicy, it can rejuvenate you.”
“How do you know that eating spicy food can restore vitality?”
He Jiaoyang asked curiously.
“That’s what I think.”
Lu Ban answered.
While eating barbecue, He Jiaoyang nervously told Lu Ban about the discussions he had with people in the chat group, and what he encountered at Silent Media.
“I see, your imaginations are quite rich,” Lu Ban said with a laugh.
He silently put away “Testament.”
At first, he had thought He Jiaoyang might be a Chosen by Gods from a Foreign Domain, a disguised assassin sent to this world to kill him. Now it seemed that it was fortunate Lu Ban had been cautious; otherwise, He Jiaoyang might have ended up on the missing person list tomorrow, and Laika might have had an extra snack tonight.
“So… are there really superhuman powers?”
He Jiaoyang, completely unaware that he had just skirted the edge of death, asked while crunching on the crispy chicken-flavored pork buns.
“Can’t you see for yourself?”
Lu Ban was actually curious about He Jiaoyang, as it was his first time encountering a superpowered individual in this world who had abilities not derived from the Silent Lands. He wondered whether these people had formed any sort of organization.
Imagining himself walking alone into a gathering of these superpowered individuals, Lu Ban thought it could be turned into a thrilling movie in which he could take on ten at a time.
“My ability is purely ancestral talent, I heard my grandfather could see too. He mentioned something about martial brothers, so maybe I’m descended from some prestigious lineage.”
He Jiaoyang answered.
“Does that mean when your sect conflicts with another, you’ll have to ask the female CEO for a sick leave, saying your sect will lose without you?”
Lu Ban asked offhandedly.
“Huh?”
He Jiaoyang didn’t quite get the joke; he was a freelancer, without a female CEO or any sect to belong to.
“Never mind, don’t worry, I don’t control ghosts, nor have I done anything bad. I make films to save the world. Just go buy a ticket to watch them. If you don’t have enough money, I can give you a few tickets for free to watch with your chat group friends during the Chinese New Year.”
Lu Ban generously offered.
“Uh, save the world through filmmaking?”
He Jiaoyang didn’t quite understand.
“Here’s a piece of advice for you,” said Lu Ban softly, “ignorance is bliss. Don’t seek too deep into things, and knowledge will naturally come chasing after you.”
“Uh…”
He Jiaoyang felt it was profound, but he couldn’t grasp it.
He continued talking with Lu Ban for a while, mainly with Lu Ban asking about the supernatural events He Jiaoyang had encountered, the methods to handle them, and past experiences with similar superpowered individuals.
After finishing their barbeque, Lu Ban tidied up the trash.
When He Jiaoyang wasn’t paying attention, Lu Ban pulled out the silver pen “Testament” and wrote a few words on He Jiaoyang’s head.
[Forget tonight’s events]
He Jiaoyang’s expression instantly became numb and blank.
Lu Ban supported him, took the elevator downstairs, conveniently threw away a garbage bag, and escorted the exorcist out of the neighborhood.
“This should be about right.”
Lu Ban mused as he patted He Jiaoyang’s shoulder, then left.
He Jiaoyang stood at the entrance of the neighborhood for a while until the vibration of a chat group on his phone brought him back to his senses.
“Damn, how did I end up here?”
He Jiaoyang checked the time.
He was supposed to be tracking Lu Ban, investigating his apartment, and looking for evidence.
Why was he still standing at the entrance of the neighborhood so late?
And why was there a taste of barbeque in his mouth?
He Jiaoyang tried to remember, but his mind, as if under the spell of a wrong medication, stubbornly diverted his thoughts elsewhere, making it impossible to recall what happened that night.
Instinctively, He Jiaoyang felt it would be best not to continue inquiring about Lu Ban.
He stood aimlessly at the neighborhood entrance for a while before dejectedly returning to his hotel. As soon as he lay on the bed, he was overwhelmed by sleepiness and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning came early.
He Jiaoyang woke up, his clothes disheveled, and prepared to take a shower and check out.
Suddenly, he found a card in his clothing pocket.
A cinema consumption card.
“…”
For some reason, He Jiaoyang was seized by a strong urge to take friends to see Lu Ban’s new movie.
…
Having dealt with the exorcist, Lu Ban didn’t search for any hidden sects or organizations of superpowered individuals.
The existence of bizarre entities in this world meant that it was also quite normal for some to have attained superpower abilities.
Perhaps these organizations were actively working behind the scenes, addressing various strange entities.
However, with the increasing pollution from the Foreign Domain, bizarre entities in this world were bound to become more unusual and dangerous. Consequently, some individuals who gained knowledge from the Foreign Domain might become new superpowered individuals. To put it in terms everyone could understand—the “Revival” of spiritual energy.
Lu Ban knew that this was the inevitable result of the Foreign Domain racing towards pollution.
The hot summer days did not get bogged down in an endless August. On the first day of September, universities started their new academic year, and Jiangcheng University bustled with activity as new freshmen arrived, many accompanied by their parents. The lively atmosphere was a reminder of the beauty of youth.
Perhaps because of Lu Ban, more people had applied to Jiangcheng University, especially the film-related majors that Lu Ban had once been part of. Maybe some believed that by following Lu Ban’s path, they could become as successful as he was.
On the street behind the university, one could often see groups of young men and women wearing their military training uniforms. Barber shops did brisk business, and the weather remained hot. As the military training ended and the long October holiday was about to begin, Lu Ban released his third teaser.
