Feng Yu, who was watching TV, suddenly stopped in her tracks.

“Hmm?”

In her field of vision, the scenery around her changed, the TV, the sofa, and the coffee table all stretched out into lines.

These lines extended infinitely in one direction, like afterimages caused by moving too fast.

If one looked closely at that moment, they would see the lines of the TV forming overlapping sets of televisions, their screens displaying a sequence of images as if capturing a period of televisions shots and stacking the photos on top of each other.

This was time.

Feng Yu’s race could see the flow of time.

“What problem has he encountered, causing a disturbance?”

Feng Yu murmured to herself.

“It’s impossible, the loop is already closed, his future should no longer change… unless…”

She thought of something, an existence capable of disrupting the temporal and spatial relations of Foreign Domain and all predestined closed loops, an entity that transcends time and space, laws, and chaos.

She felt blood trickling from her nose.

Just being aware of this fact was enough to shock her body.

Laika came over and rubbed against Feng Yu’s feet, looking quite anxious.

“It’s okay, he’s just gone slightly out of my sight.”

Feng Yu patted Laika’s head.

Immediately after, Feng Yu’s eyes turned red.

She took a step forward, as if crossing through time itself.

Whoosh—

Feng Yu’s figure disappeared.

“Awoo—Awoo—”

Only Laika’s bark echoed in the empty living room.

Am I already dead?

As Shuangxin thought about this, she suddenly sat up.

She gasped for air, the damp atmosphere causing an unknown sensation in her nostrils.

She found herself in the midst of a heavy downpour.

Future City had turned into ruins, the broken dome of the ecological park was exposed, the vegetation inside ravaged unevenly, the street cleaning robots were motionless, their heads drooping lifelessly.

More robots lay askew on the ground, and in the distance, solar panels had collected rainwater, forming miniature waterfalls.

The desert ground had turned black from the rain, sticking to Shuangxin’s hands; she found it unbelievable.

Looking further out, there were continuous dark clouds, flashing lightning, a scene Shuangxin had never witnessed before.

The storm seemed to stretch for hundreds of kilometers, everywhere she looked, the sky was shrouded in gloom.

Shuangxin got to her feet.

She felt like her body was falling apart.

She found Moment and Singer, her two unconscious companions, breathing evenly.

Shuangxin had no idea how she had ended up this way.

As she recalled, she walked towards the outskirts of Future City.

They had gone to the industrial park to look for information, then discovered the wormhole to Another World, followed by the insect swarm attack, then the robots’ defensive line. Afterward, the insect swarm breached all defenses, darkening the sky.

Thinking this far, Shuangxin’s head began to ache.

She could only remember a thunderous boom that shook the heavens, followed by a series of shockwaves that knocked them off their feet and into unconsciousness.

Before losing her vision completely, Shuangxin only remembered the insect swarms being drawn away rapidly by something.

Shuangxin trudged forward, the rain replenishing her moisture, her bare feet stepping on the wet sand, the chilling coolness invigorating.

Soon, Shuangxin saw the collapsed robot girl on the ground.

Her body was severely damaged, and as the front-line commander, the insect swarm had not spared Lin.

The pretty dress was torn, hands, feet, most of her body were nowhere to be found, circuits and chips exposed, cooling in the rain.

Lin’s half face had also lost its skin, revealing the metallic visage underneath.

“Lin.”

Shuangxin knelt down and propped up the robot.

Until that moment, she never knew how heavy this robot girl could be.

ZZZ—

An unsettling sound of electric current rose, and Shuangxin saw that Lin’s once lively eyes had regained some luster.

The mechanical pupils turned toward Shuangxin, but they did not focus.

“I’m sorry, my monitor seems to have malfunctioned, I can’t see you right now.”

Lin’s voice was no longer as crisp as before, but had taken on a more mechanical, flat and stiff tone.

“Miss Shuangxin, are you alright? Are your companions safe?”

Hearing Lin’s words, Shuangxin felt a tight squeeze in her heart.

She had not expected that upon waking, Lin’s first concern would be for their safety.

“We’re all fine, the swarm has left, we’re safe now, we can go home.”

Shuangxin said.

“Is that so, that’s good, we, we successfully protected humanity, fulfilled our oath.”

Lin’s voice became intermittent, like a radio without electricity.

“It’s enough, let’s go home, the Saints will surely be able to fix you, and you can continue to help us, to be with us.”

Shuangxin sniffled.

The heavy rain poured down, and the rain in Lin’s eyes looked like tears spilling over, soaking her entire cheek.

“I’m sorry, because I am a robot, I don’t have the expression of sorrow.”

“Miss Shuangxin, I know now.”

Even with the sound of electric currents, Lin’s voice remained gentle, still conveying warmth.

“The person we’ve been waiting for, is no longer here.”

“I’ve always said we can’t leave Future City, that we needed to wait here for humans to return, but in reality, I am very clear, possessing the highest level logic processing unit here, I know, humans aren’t coming back.”

“Something might have happened in this world that I can’t comprehend; humans might already be in danger elsewhere. During the hundreds of days we’ve stayed here, my logic processing unit has told me more than once that humans will never return.”

“Yet I still held on to hope, thinking I might have a fault, to doubt the judgments of the highest-level logic processing unit. I stubbornly made everyone in Future City accompany me for so many years.”

“So, I thank you all, your arrival proved that I’m not malfunctioning. Even though the people we’ve been waiting for haven’t returned, there must, there must, there must be other humans in this world, other robots like us waiting for humans.”

“They might be able to wait for humans to return, to resume serving everyone – what an enviable thing.”

“Miss Shuangxin, please live on well, that is my greatest wish.”

Lin’s voice became increasingly mechanized, until eventually, she could no longer form words.

Shuangxin didn’t know if the wetness on her face was rain or tears.

She merely felt that the world was terrible.

Real humans had turned into monsters.

Man-made robots, however, possessed emotions even more steadfast and noble than humans.

Beings worthy of life were about to pass away.

Beings that should have been destroyed remained unchanged and eternal.

“Miss Shuangxin.”

Lin’s voice suddenly became gentle again, as if mustering her last bit of strength, she lifted her hand and wiped away the tears from Shuangxin’s face.

“The future of this world is yours.”

“You, who have a radiant past, have struggled and survived through hardships, will surely overcome these trials and reach a better tomorrow.”

“So, please don’t… cry…”

The robot girl fell silent once more.

The sound of rain suddenly grew louder, drowning out everything in the world, engulfing this desolate world.
