I Forged the Myth of the Ancient Overlords -
Chapter 488 - 488 487. City Without Windows_1
Chapter 488: 487. City Without Windows_1 Chapter 488: 487. City Without Windows_1 “The ecology here is just like this.”
“Every creature has its own place in this desert, and as long as they are not overhunted, they can always survive.”
Sitting on a camel bug, Shuangxin looked at the blue sky ahead and said.
“I once had the chance to see the records in the State Library, read the materials about human society before the disaster, and at that time, the whole world was filled with green trees, mountains, lakes, plains, these words I can only understand from the records in text and pictures.”
“When I saw those records, I was a little yearning, also a little heartache, yearning for that beautiful world, heartache because people at that time didn’t know how to cherish, and they destroyed it all.”
“That’s why I want to study the insect swarms, find their weaknesses, and completely eradicate them.”
Hearing Shuangxin’s words, Lu Ban remained silent.
The reason the world of Wasteland has become like this may not be much related to human actions; under the gaze of Evil God in the Foreign Domain, misfortune is hard to escape, what humans did or didn’t do was futile.
It doesn’t matter, it’s all the same.
As for whether the Wasteland can completely eradicate the insect swarms, Lu Ban is not sure. Whether this world can ultimately rely on the efforts of researchers like Shuangxin to eventually eliminate the insect swarms, sustaining the desolate but vibrant present, or whether it will be completely devoured by the insect swarms, wrung dry, leaving only endless sands.
The four of them advanced towards the location recorded on the map, and after about four days, a small-sized ruin appeared on the horizon.
This ruin was much smaller compared to the cities Lu Ban had seen before; at a rough glance, it was about the size of a regular university campus, more like a facility than a city or town.
Whether because of erosion, there were no tall buildings in the ruins, nor were there vast open spaces, just low houses stretching on.
And unlike ordinary ruins, these houses didn’t seem very damaged, as if they had been maintained all this time.
Lu Ban’s True Sight looked over, and due to a lack of understanding, he could only use it as a telescope.
This look surprised Lu Ban.
Because those buildings had no windows, they were completely walled on all four sides, such structures he had only seen in reality in some isolating research institutions.
“Where did the information about this location come from?”
Lu Ban couldn’t help asking.
“From the records in the library, some materials will note some special places, and the city-state will send people to investigate, some of which are ruins.”
Singer answered truthfully.
“This ruin looks very new, there’s a problem.”
Lu Ban cautioned.
“Very new?”
Shuangxin frowned, casting a glance at Lu Ban.
“I have good eyesight, I can see clearly, look, those buildings have no windows, the walls aren’t much damaged, this isn’t the look of ruins at all.”
Lu Ban pointed out.
“Could there be people living there?”
Moment speculated.
“Living in such a place, could there be?”
Singer felt something was off.
“I don’t think it’s likely, it might be the insect swarms.”
Lu Ban followed his hunch, but he couldn’t be certain as not a single insect was in sight.
“How about this, I can run fast, shall I go and check?”
So, he suggested, he could go alone and take a look first. If there were insect swarms, he would deal with them using the “cat,” and if not, he could search this eerie place.
“I’ll go with you.”
Shuangxin said.
Lu Ban initially wanted to refuse, but after considering Shuangxin’s abilities, which might be helpful if they encountered a large number of insects, he did not refuse again.
Singer and Moment stayed behind to stand guard in the distance while Lu Ban and Shuangxin rode the camel bugs to the edge of the ruins.
Observing from a close distance, Lu Ban was even more convinced of his previous guess; the surface of the buildings was only covered with a thin layer of dust, and signs of erosion were not noticeable, to put it simply, something must have been taking care of it.
Another thing was that these ruins were also surrounded by a wall.
Generally, cities have open roads and don’t construct walls, but this place was clearly not a common urban structure; it resembled a delineated area.
Although they could have climbed over the wall, Lu Ban and Shuangxin managed to find the main gate.
The writing on the gate was no longer legible, and it seemed to have been scorched by fire.
Upon entering the walled area, the layout of the buildings became a serious matter for Lu Ban.
In his words, it was reminiscent of the industrial parks or university towns in his world.
The buildings were similar in specification and existed in clusters, like the one near the gate which seemed like some sort of administrative hall, with only two stories and a spacious entrance.
The building a bit farther away was four stories tall and lacked any windows.
Shuangxin had just taken a couple of steps, intending to investigate the administrative hall, when suddenly, a sound arose from the street.
She and Lu Ban immediately crouched down and hid.
“…Sounds familiar.”
Lu Ban peeked out and saw a box slowly moving down the dust-covered street.
The box was cylindrical, reaching only up to an average person’s waist, with a metallic texture. On its lower half, aside from the tracks, there was a constantly spinning brush wheel.
It was an advanced cleaning robot.
Lu Ban wasn’t sure if such things existed in his world; he had seen street sweepers, and this device seemed like a miniature version, emitting the sound of a motor as it cleaned the streets, leaving them spotless.
The two watched silently as the object slowly moved away.
“What is that?”
Shuangxin asked, having never seen such a thing; it didn’t resemble a bug nor a living creature, but it seemed more like some kind of machinery.
“You don’t know?”
Lu Ban reflexively asked.
Since Shuangxin had access to the information from before the apocalypse, she should have been able to deduce what a cleaning robot was, so why the baffled look?
Or was it possible that the materials she had read didn’t include such details?
With that thought in mind, Lu Ban began to explain.
“It’s some sort of machinery, an artificially created object that moves on its own, generally used for cleaning.”
He wasn’t sure how much Shuangxin understood about robots, so he answered in the simplest way possible.
“An artificial object, does that mean there are still other people living here?”
Shuangxin’s eyes suddenly lit up.
Lu Ban wasn’t sure if there were other people here, but he thought for a moment and approached another cleaning robot.
The robot, detecting an obstacle, stopped.
A moment later, it bypassed Lu Ban and continued forward.
“Pretty advanced.”
Lu Ban felt that the technology level before this world’s destruction was probably a bit higher than that of his own world.
He and Shuangxin walked into the administrative hall and saw a large table in the center of the hall, with a miniature model on top that matched the ruins.
Lu Ban noticed the words revealed by regular cleaning on one side of the model.
“…Future City Sales Office?”
Shuangxin read out the words.
