Chapter 432 - 432 431. Group interview_1
Chapter 432: 431. Group interview_1 Chapter 432: 431. Group interview_1 Xu Chen was somewhat nervous.
He used to work in an escape room in Jiangcheng, playing the role of a female ghost.
Everything had been smooth sailing, except once he saw a couple entering the room, where the female was his friend’s girlfriend, but the male wasn’t his friend, which was the only troublesome incident.
However, Xu Chen ran into a problem a while ago.
While he was working in the escape room, a customer seemed to have seen a real ghost.
More importantly, it seemed that the ghost had attached itself to him.
Ever since that day, Xu Chen frequently dreamt that he was lying in bed, with a girlfriend in a red wedding dress sleeping next to him; as soon as he turned his head, the girlfriend would stare at him with an extremely resentful gaze.
After waking up with a start, Xu Chen would remember that he didn’t have a girlfriend.
He couldn’t help but shed tears of sadness.
Anyway, he had been sleeping poorly for a while now and felt that his work performance was deteriorating.
Soon, Xu Chen came across Lu Ban’s recruitment ad.
The moment he saw Lu Ban’s face, the memory suddenly came back to him.
“Isn’t this fucking Lu Ban!??”
As a young person of the new era, Xu Chen had, of course, seen all of Lu Ban’s movies, and he had been upset for several days over the character Amber’s death; even now, his home still had a poster of Amber from “Peaceful Days in Spring.”
The escape room had been too dim at the time, and he was also very anxious, so Xu Chen hadn’t recognized Lu Ban.
If he had recognized him then, Xu Chen would have definitely taken the opportunity to throw a few punches when no one was looking.
Now that he was distressed at work, Xu Chen felt he should seek a breakthrough.
A person couldn’t, or at least shouldn’t always be an NPC in an escape room, right?
At the very least one should be the one controlling the console.
With that in mind, Xu Chen applied for Lu Ban’s recruitment.
Today was the interview.
Speaking of the interview, Xu Chen heard that tens of thousands of resumes had been submitted this time; it was unlikely that Lu Ban would interview everyone personally, it would probably be done by his subordinates.
Xu Chen didn’t feel that having seen Lu Ban before gave him any advantage. Before coming, he joined some WeChat groups and discovered that the candidates for the interview were incredibly talented.
One claimed to be a Taoist from Mount Emei, who had studied Taoist teachings for thirty years and could manage all sorts of rites.
Another said they started acting at five, took to the international stage at six, won international awards at seven, and then quit show business to attend primary school at eight; they had just graduated from university this year and were ready to resume their former career.
Someone else boasted they used to manage hundreds of people as the head of the city’s largest gang; with just a flip of their hand, no one dared to oppose them, and now they had retired and were seeking a professional occupation.
There was also someone who claimed they were betrayed by a man who hacked them and their child over three hundred and sixty times, and they had only just managed to crawl out of their coffin to come to the interview.
The diverse life experiences of everyone made Xu Chen feel inferior.
“This must be all bullshit!”
Xu Chen complained on the way to the interview site.
How could there be any gang leaders or Taoists coming for an interview? Xu Chen figured these people were just role-playing, trying to bluff their way through.
When he arrived at the venue, the Silent Media company, Xu Chen found several other people there for the interview as well.
They varied in age and gender, and on the surface, they all looked quite normal.
“You’re here for the interview too?”
A man approached him and asked, seeing Xu Chen nod, he spoke again.
“I’ll tell you a secret, but you can’t tell anyone else.”
“Hmm?”
Xu Chen, curious about the secret, couldn’t help but prick up his ears.
“Actually, I’m a true descendant from Mount Longhu, and I’ve come down the mountain to exorcise demons and uphold justice on the orders of my master because of the ghosts and goblins roaming Jiangcheng Mountain!”
The man said earnestly.
“???”
Xu Chen wondered if the guy was a bit off in the head?
He didn’t respond and turned to see the man already striking up a conversation with someone else.
“I’ll tell you a secret, but don’t tell anyone else.”
“…”
Xu Chen confirmed the man was crazy.
He then saw a woman following closely behind him.
Before that man upfront could continue telling another person a secret that wasn’t to be shared with anyone else, Xu Chen took the initiative to speak with the woman.
“Are you here for the audition as well?”
“Yeah.”
The woman who looked to be almost forty nodded.
“You’re not the one whose husband chopped her over three hundred and sixty times before she struggled to crawl from beneath the coffin to come for the audition, are you?”
Xu Chen asked in advance.
“What are you talking about?”
The woman looked at Xu Chen as if he were insane.
“Never mind, don’t believe what that person before said.”
Xu Chen, holding no grudges, reminded her.
“Got it, son.”
The woman replied.
“???”
Xu Chen was completely baffled.
Could it be that all the people coming for auditions this time are psychiatric patients?
I read online that Lu Ban likes to draw inspiration from mental hospitals, could these people be Lu Ban’s fellow patients?
Why am I auditioning with a bunch of psychiatric patients?
Could it be… that I am a psychiatric patient too?
Harboring such thoughts, Xu Chen followed the person ahead into the audition meeting room.
He had never experienced such a group audition, but from what he read about other people’s experiences, mastering the knack for it would make it quite easy. The most basic requirement was to have a knack for argumentation.
No matter how correct the person you’re auditioning with might be, you can’t just keep saying “ah, right, right”; you have to contradict a bit to stand out.
To Xu Chen’s surprise, aside from some interviewers he didn’t recognize, Lu Ban was there too.
He actually came in person for the auditions!
Xu Chen swallowed hard, growing more nervous.
The staff distributed some materials, and Xu Chen saw they were scripts.
Are we going to perform on the spot?
“Now that everyone has a script, let’s see your acting skills,”
Lu Ban stated, he assigned roles succinctly and gave everybody ten minutes to familiarize themselves with the script.
Xu Chen saw his role was that of a bartender, a middle-of-the-road character whose lines were all expletives, and there were a lot of them—hard to memorize.
Damn it, I drew the short straw.
Xu Chen glanced at the others’: theirs were pretty simple, only his was the most extensive.
He began frantically memorizing his lines.
As he memorized, Xu Chen suddenly felt he was becoming someone other than himself.
The complex lines stuck in his brain like cobwebs as if they had become his instinct.
He felt as though he truly became a bartender from the Abandoned Capital Slums, witnessing the filthy squabbles every day, often getting drunk alone to escape reality.
One drunken episode, he saw a woman standing in the street; as he approached, he found her face grim and terrifying, which scared him so much he broke his leg and had to seek treatment from a doctor.
Luckily, the doctor was kind and treated him for a low fee, even prescribing medicine.
Now, the doctor had died, and he was undergoing an investigation.
Xu Chen felt he had fully submerged into the character.
“Let’s start.”
Ten minutes later, Lu Ban said.
Two auditionees immediately stood up, diving into character and starting their performance.
But most of the auditionees were stuttering and stumbling, seemingly unable to get into the zone.
Lu Ban, watching their performances, appeared quite satisfied.
When choosing actors, he didn’t care about their past experiences, acting skills.
He only cared about the fit, actors suitable for the roles, who knew how to perform the moment they received the script.
It’s not the actor choosing the script, but the script choosing the actor.
