Chapter 417: 416. You are playing with fire_1 Chapter 417: 416. You are playing with fire_1 “Hello, Mr. Corleone,”
Detective Tryst adjusted the brim of his hat and swiftly scanned the room, no trace of Stone to be found.
“You should have knocked first.”
Seeing this, Corleone remained calm, his hand moving from a cup to rest on a book, while the other quietly opened a drawer containing a handgun.
“Sorry, but since some of your men seem to lack manners, we took the liberty of teaching them some etiquette.”
Tryst glanced at the bodyguard collapsed at his feet.
Although he looked quite impressive now, the sight of him scurrying for cover behind Shia, head ducked low from the rat-a-tat of the typewriter keys, was not something Tryst wanted anyone else to witness.
“Mr. Corleone, I’m not sure if there’s a traitor within your family, but we were greeted with an attempted attack during our well-intended visit, which was truly terrifying.”
Tryst walked further into the room, saying.
“I have no shortage of traitors around me,”
Corleone said with a smile.
“Thank you for helping me dispose of a traitor. I think a handsome reward is in order for you.”
“Mr. Corleone, you are playing with fire,”
said Lu Ban, who was not in the mood for playing riddles with Corleone.
“That monster is not something you can control; it won’t grant you immortality but will only turn you into a walking corpse.”
Hearing Lu Ban’s words, Corleone’s expression turned stern, and he closed the book with a smile on his face.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. If there is a monster in Abandoned Capital, it should only exist in the sewers of the slums,”
Corleone said.
“Don’t rush, let me explain to Mr. Corleone,”
Detective Tryst removed the pipe from his mouth and continued.
“Years ago, when Mr. Corleone was still on the rise, he acquired some knowledge, knowledge about the Foreign Domain, about summoning creatures from the Foreign Domain. This knowledge overturned his understanding, and since then, Mr. Corleone has been obsessed, never forgetting it.”
“But ordinary people can’t touch the Foreign Domain; the monsters in those wilds are terrifying enough. Even with a large organization, Mr. Corleone has never been able to contact the supernatural. His offspring are numerous, his organization has grown, but these worldly things no longer stir his heart, only the entities of the Foreign Domain. This tower of emptiness was bound to collapse with his aging and death until he met Doctor Howes.”
“Doctor Howes was a physician who operated a private clinic, but what’s more significant is that he was a descendant of the Crane Cry Sect that had fallen to the Abandoned Capital. Unlike those charlatans of the martial world, he presented Mr. Corleone with real supernatural miracles, convincing him that he could possess the method that allowed Taoist Crane Cry to ascend to immortality.”
“Mr. Corleone provided Doctor Howes with housing, materials, money, and subjects for experimentation. In the Abandoned Capital, such experiments were quite difficult to carry out. The wealthy of the Shangcheng Area, though ignorant and unprincipled, would unleash Iron Fist should their interests be tampered with. This was why the Catania Family, despite its current power, still sought to ingratiate themselves with the higher-ups and felt compelled to whitewash their enterprises.”
“The pollution brought about by the recent rise of factories coincidentally met Doctor Howes’s needs. He opened his clinic at the junction of rich and poor, generously treating the workers and providing medicine at low cost. In reality, these were trials; the essence of the medicine served as a mutagen that incessantly induced mutations in people. After enduring the severe pollution of the Foreign Domain, common industrial waste gases could no longer do more harm to them.”
“Of course, rituals summoning monsters from the Foreign Domain could not rely solely on medication. Doctor Howes sought for a long time and finally found a suitable vessel – it was the companion of a young girl named Liz. He was ill, and the medication was costly. Doctor Howes provided the medication, slowly eroding the subject’s body with it, and relying on regular check-ups to gradually carry out the ritual.”
“Doctor Howes told Mr. Corleone that the creatures from the Foreign Domain could transform human bodies, grant immortality, and bestow infinite power. Mr. Corleone indeed had a host of good-for-nothing children and was certain that should these children inherit the family business, the estate would be squandered. Thus, his idea was to gain immortal life and reign over this eternal throne for a millennium.”
“However, accidents are always the main theme in the Abandoned Capital. According to Doctor Howes’s plan, the subject should have completed its transformation into a monster in his basement after a certain period of time, but an incident disrupted everything. Flora, as part of the Blade Gang under Tuck, driven by jealousy toward Liz and disillusionment with Tuck, chose to betray the Catania Family, revealing Tuck’s hiding place and when he would appear there.”
“Among the Catania Family, there were always those eager to demonstrate their merit, including Maggie, a distant relative of Mr. Corleone. He led an attack on Happy Home Apartments, killed Tuck, and the violence inadvertently spilled over to Liz and the experimental subject next door.”
“Liz received a fatal wound on the spot, and the subject, due to the catalyst of death, was born prematurely.”
“That day, in the Happy Home Apartments, the mud-like monster completed its transformation, descending into this world ahead of time. It devoured Liz, merged with her last remnants of consciousness, and the two of them achieved unification, never to be separated again.”
“The monster was secretly contained; it exhibited astonishing strength and continued to grow amidst constant killing. Mr. Corleone found that it seemed to take a liking to Stone, able to be active alongside him. As a result, he allowed it to take on the appearance of a dog, staying by Stone’s side.”
“Mr. Corleone wished for eternal life, for the monster to grow, but the monster seemed to have its own consciousness. It killed both Doctor Howes and Flora, who were about to conduct the second experiment, as well as the Catania Family’s Maggie. They were aware that the monster was seeking revenge; the will of Liz and the experimental subject was gradually influencing the monster. They wanted to find a way to control it. Hence, they commissioned me to investigate the truth behind it all.”
With these words, Tryst picked up his pipe and drew another breath.
“Mr. Corleone, do you find the story I’ve told to your satisfaction?”
After hearing all this, Mr. Corleone’s expression remained unchanged.
“A very good story. So, Detective Tryst, have you found a way to control that monster?”
He inquired.
“No, Mr. Corleone, that monster will only continue to devour until the very end; you cannot control it.”
Tryst replied.
The next instant, a drop of sludge fell from the ceiling.
