Chapter 402: 401. We common people are just like this_1 Chapter 402: 401. We common people are just like this_1 The young man was dressed in a simple brown suit, his hair somewhat disheveled. His eyes were earnest, like those of a beggar begging for food and alms, making it hard for people to become guarded or cautious around him. However, Cui Siter knew that it was precisely such a person who might stab you when you least expected it, from the back straight through to the chest, perhaps even adding a remark like “The Catania Family sends its regards.”
“If I were you, I wouldn’t be playing the violin here, I’d be chasing after the one behind all this.”
Cui Siter spoke calmly.
“There’s no need. That’s not my goal.”
The young man found a sofa to sit down on and gestured for Cui Siter to do the same.
“You might not remember my name, but that’s okay. My name is now Stone, Stone of the Catania Family, the family’s advisor.”
When he heard the name, Cui Siter suddenly remembered.
More than two years ago, during “The Madman’s Rant,” they had rented a car for cheap at a rental shop in Abandoned Capital. And it was this young man who was responsible for collecting the money at the time.
Back then, he was still called Stone.
“What do you want?”
Cui Siter had no idea what price this young man had paid, by what means he had climbed to this position.
A gang’s advisor was someone who assisted the gang leader with various daily matters, and usually, such a person had to be a blood relative of the family. Stone, as an orphan, was clearly not a blood relative of the Catania Family. To have reached this position, he must have been extraordinary in some way.
Not to mention, it was said that the rise of the Catania Family during this period was linked to their new advisor. It seemed that this young man was much more formidable than Cui Siter had imagined.
“I’m not interested in what my immature sister likes to do. I hear you’re investigating Doctor Howes’s case?”
Stone’s fingers were interlaced, resting on the coffee table.
“Yes.”
Cui Siter couldn’t grasp Stone’s thoughts and replied succinctly.
“Relax, I have no grudges against that doctor, and if it’s possible, I really would like to have a chat with him about my step-sister’s preferences. I’m also not stopping your investigation.”
Stone said indifferently.
“Actually, I would like you to continue your investigation, but report back to me with updates on the case regularly.”
“Have people under you died in the same way they did?”
Almost instantly, Cui Siter thought of what Lu Ban had said—a doctor, a call girl, and presumably a gang member too, all died because of the Glass Flower.
Now that Stone, the advisor of the Catania Family, had approached him asking him to continue the investigation and keep him informed of the case proceedings, he was surely not just playing detective games.
Connecting these dots, Cui Siter immediately thought of this possibility.
“Impressive, Detective.”
Stone laughed dryly. No change in his emotions could be detected. He gestured, and a thug at his side handed Cui Siter a paper document, which was a simple autopsy report and investigation.
“Glass Flower.”
As soon as Cui Siter saw the photo of the corpse, he understood.
This gang member’s innards had bloomed into a flower shape, frozen and preserved by glass.
He flipped through the autopsy report. The person had died one day earlier, which was the night Cui Siter had received the assignment and met with Shia. He was playing cards with a few people in a storage room; he left to go to the bathroom and didn’t come back for a long time. Later, when his companions went looking for him, they found him lying outside of the warehouse in this state.
From the time the victim left until he was discovered, he hadn’t made any sound that could have attracted the attention of the people inside the warehouse.
The victim was a relative by marriage of the Catania Family, which naturally caught Stone’s attention.
“Our family has expanded rapidly recently, and it’s normal for some to be displeased with us. I’d like you to investigate the murderer, for the safety of Black Street. I’m sure you wouldn’t refuse, Mr. Cui Siter.”
Stone said in a grave tone.
“The safety of Black Street?”
Cui Siter laughed sarcastically.
“What? Don’t you think Black Street has become much quieter since we gained control of over seventy percent of the underground business there? Equal power leads to chaos, chaos leads to war, and war leads to death. Only one absolute power can make the whole Black Street peaceful, and peace is good for business.”
Stone did not skimp on words to explain his thought process.
“Gang? Good business?”
Cui Siter felt that the gang this young man spoke of was different from what he knew.
“Detective, you don’t understand gangs. Those who rise to the top by intimidation and bribery are common gangs. The Catania Family used to be that kind of gang too, but I believe these methods only provide a temporary solution to problems. I propose a family business that can be sustained. We started with contraband, but now we also engage in legal businesses, dealing with the big shots of Abandoned Capital. We have established schools and give homeless children a place to stay. Tomorrow’s charity event is part of our fundraising efforts.”
Stone’s fingers tapped lightly on the coffee table.
“It’s shortsighted to only focus on high-risk, illegal methods to seize profits. A truly smart person knows how to make their wealth clean, beautiful, and impeccable.”
Cui Siter looked at Stone and for a moment thought that this guy would surely get along well with Lu Ban.
“So, Mr. Cui Siter, we mean you no harm. As a detective, you’ve solved many cases in Abandoned Capital, and everyone trusts you. We, too, want to establish a good relationship with you. This case involves a member of our family, and I hope the person who killed him is punished. That doesn’t go against fairness and justice, does it?”
Stone smiled.
Cui Siter glanced at the autopsy report again.
“I need to examine the body at the scene. Also, give me the victim’s travel history from the past month, including who they met, what they ate…”
He listed some information needed for the investigation. Once he entered his domain, Cui Siter became much calmer.
Moreover, this young strategist did not seem that violent, at least not towards Cui Siter.
“No problem.”
Stone stood up and shook hands with Cui Siter.
“With a great detective like you in Abandoned Capital, I as a common citizen really feel much safer.”
“…”
Cui Siter twitched the corner of his mouth and watched the other leave.
He thought for a moment and returned to the small room behind the music store.
The two people in the room were still sitting, puffing smoke, apparently not noticing the commotion outside earlier, or pretending not to know.
He looked at the music store owner, said nothing, and left the shop.
“Things are getting more complicated, but at least there’s another clue.”
Cui Siter sighed and prepared to go back and find Lu Ban and the others.
