Lu Ban pondered while looking at the divine idol in his hand.

“They might have deceived this person while resupplying at Daffodil Island, but could there be other accomplices? If I report this person now, will it not alert the enemy?”

Through the previous conversation, Lu Ban was almost certain that the other party was not some Evil God from the Wasteland but rather a Chosen by Gods like himself.

From the interactions they had, it seemed like there was only one person responding to Xiang Luvan.

Unsure about the number of Chosen by Gods on the other side, Lu Ban decided to act cautiously.

He stuffed the divine idol back into the embrace of the guard, feigned ignorance, and hid in the shadows.

After a while, the guard regained consciousness, his eyes full of confusion as he had no idea what had just happened to him.

At that very moment, a voice resounded inside the guard’s mind.

“I have granted you a blessing. Go back to sleep and continue to pray here tomorrow.”

The guard jolted to his feet and looked around. After checking the divine idol in his chest, he secured it and dashed off like a puff of smoke.

Lu Ban canceled the “Testament” loop in the guard’s brain and sighed softly.

Tossing the rotten food and water into the ocean, Lu Ban stuffed some straw into a sack, put it back in its original place, and acted as if nothing had happened.

Exiting the hold, Lu Ban saw Shobu on deck, gazing at the sea.

“Not going to sleep?”

Lu Ban asked.

“The sea breeze carries the scent of blood; it’s not a good sign,”

Shobu, still carrying her katana, stood at the fore of the ship. Ahead of their vessel was the mercenaries’ ship. Both ships advanced through the glittering sea, and the night breeze was favorable, providing a swift sailing speed. Moist sea wind brushed past Lu Ban’s ears, along with a faint odor of blood.

Such scents were not uncommon at sea. Aside from the monsters, predatory fish sometimes stained the waters red with blood, and the stench of their decaying carcasses was enough to induce vomiting.

“We are now entering the Narcissus Channel, which under normal circumstances is safe, yet it runs dangerously close to a perilous area. If the enemy launches an attack, I think the most likely scenario is that they’ll force us into that danger zone,”

Shobu’s long hair fluttered slightly in the wind as she spoke plainly.

“So you mean to say that ships are already pursuing us?”

Lu Ban thought of the incident with the divine idol. He hadn’t told Shobu. Firstly, this involved the affairs of the Chosen by Gods, and secondly, Lu Ban planned to learn more about the other party before making a move.

Since they resorted to such tactics, it implied they weren’t prepared for a direct confrontation anytime soon. According to Shobu, they were likely waiting for an opportunity as they approached the dangerous zone.

“They’ve probably been waiting here for a while. I suspect that those guys have received assistance from people at the Great Shrine of Harmony Island. We might be facing an onslaught from several official warships.”

“Then aren’t we simply unable to escape?”

Lu Ban had Underwater Breathing, so he wasn’t afraid of the sea—he could just walk on the seafloor if necessary.

But Amber couldn’t breathe underwater. He had to ensure her safety.

“Only by proceeding at full speed is there a chance to get away. If necessary, we might have to ask Lady Priestess to board our ship,”

Shobu glanced over at the smaller mercenaries’ ship.

Transferring Amber to the smaller ship in advance and using the larger one as a decoy was also an option.

“I’ll rely on you if it comes to that,”

Shobu smiled at Lu Ban.

“If we encounter such a scenario, I must remain here to oversee everything. Otherwise, it won’t take long for them to see through our disguise,”

“Let’s talk about how we can make the ship go faster instead,”

Lu Ban thought of his own “Testament.”

In theory, he could use Speech Bullets to increase the ship’s speed, but even if scaled by vehicle speed, it still had its limits. Whether it would be enough to escape pursuit was uncertain.

But it was worth a try.

“Boss, you seem very determined to escort Amber safely to the Great Shrine of Harmony Island,”

Lu Ban asked.

“To be able to gain money and status, for a mercenary, it’s a very worthwhile deal,”

Shobu answered.

“But there’s more to it than that, isn’t there?”

Lu Ban, with the thought of increasing his exploration by learning more, persisted in asking.

“Could it be that you were once a member of the shrine maidens and left the Great Shrine of Harmony Island because you failed to become the Chief Priestess, then wandered here to become a mercenary, so you want to help your junior?”

He made up a story on the fly.

“… My sword hasn’t tasted blood in several days.”

“Then how about we catch a fish for a midnight snack?”

Lu Ban looked out at the dark sea, unsure if there were any big fish to eat in these cold waters.

Seeing Lu Ban’s appearance, Shobu sighed.

“I’ve seen filth kill humans, and I’ve seen the Pure Fire from the Chief Priestess burn those monsters. To us, the Chief Priestess is above all. Since Lady Amber possesses the strongest power, she should become the Chief Priestess.”

Shobu sighed again.

“Is it really that simple?”

Lu Ban was curious.

“Do we need more reasons to do the right thing?”

Shobu retorted.

“We don’t, indeed.”

Lu Ban nodded.

“Moreover, they gave so much that even without considering the gains after Lady Amber becomes the Chief Priestess, just the money from their family alone is enough for us to buy land on a somewhat remote island and live without worries for life. Once this mission is over, I…”

Before Shobu could finish, Lu Ban interrupted her.

“Big sis, you shouldn’t say such things.”

He stopped her from tempting fate.

In truth, Lu Ban wasn’t worried about an enemy coming at them directly.

With Laika and his own Suona, “Minor Calamity Generator,” Lu Ban really wasn’t afraid of enemies confronting him head-on.

What worried him was an enemy with some weird and unpredictable power that could take out Amber from a distance.

However, based on today’s exchange with the Divine Idol, it seemed the enemy didn’t possess such direct long-range attack capabilities and could only rely on beguiling people, leveraging the Divine Idol to wreak havoc.

In that case, Lu Ban had plenty of room to maneuver. Essentially, as long as Miss Amber didn’t rush in headfirst, they still had a fighting chance.

“The Narcissus Channel is relatively safe, but it also means there are many pirates. We won’t only face those in pursuit,”

Shobu said as she glanced at the flag on the mast.

She turned around, ready to head back to the cabin.

“You should rest early too. I have a feeling the next few days won’t be very peaceful for us.”

After Shobu left, Lu Ban looked at the flag hanging on the mast.

A strange gust of wind suddenly blew, causing the flag that was flying high to drop abruptly.

Lu Ban looked toward the ship’s side, to the horizon of the sea.

There, a deep purple storm raged, like the border of the world.
