Chapter 304: 303. Is this the [Metamorphosis] difficulty?_1 Chapter 304: 303. Is this the [Metamorphosis] difficulty?_1 “How could this be…”
The Merman glided through the water, his innate talent allowing him to swim at high speeds in the sea. If he hadn’t been concerned about the possibility of other dangers on the island and the safety of moving with his team, he could have swum across directly.
But now, facing a terrifying creature, he could no longer concern himself with his teammates.
Decisively abandoning his team was the Merman’s way of survival.
He was just praying there were no other monsters in the sea.
Glancing back, the Merman saw the Hunter had actually jumped into the sea!
“Why is it so persistent!”
The Merman had heard of such creatures before. Once they locked onto a target, they would pursue it to the ends of the earth to kill and devour it, with even time unable to stop them. It was for this reason that these creatures were given the name Hunter.
To evade their pursuit, other than turning around and killing the Hunter, the only way was to stay in open spaces.
But the Merman thought this was nonsense, as he had heard rumors that someone targeted by a Hunter had fled to a plain and lived rough for several days, only for the Hunter to burst forth from within the person’s own body.
Moreover, living forever in the shadow of a Hunter’s hunt was extremely painful even if one could hide.
Luckily, the Merman’s swimming speed was fast. By comparison, the Hunter’s swimming speed was much slower.
“I will immediately lift the Seal, allowing the Divine Being that is sealed to deal with the Hunter. I can completely return to my own world.”
The Merman got on land and immediately ran toward the center of the Temple.
He didn’t notice the ghostly twisted architecture, nor did he see that the towering obelisks actually stood at angles that shouldn’t exist in this world.
He had no intention of admiring the Temple that had stood through ancient times and had remained intact for countless years.
The Merman just wanted to run fast.
Standing at the edge of the Temple, he could see the huge door at the center, which resembled a monolith made of bluestone, heavy as a mountain.
The Merman was running toward that door when he suddenly felt someone pulling him from behind.
He quickly turned around, throwing out a clump of seaweed from his arms.
The seaweed began to grow wildly in midair, turning into a huge, writhing creature capable of entangling a human, with ferocious mouthparts that opened and closed in its depths.
“No one?”
The Merman saw nothing; he stopped in his tracks and took a dagger equipped with gears and springs from his arms. He tried to chisel some Stone from a nearby pillar as material, but to his surprise, he found that the Stone of the pillar was extremely hard, and the dagger couldn’t shake it at all.
“No choice then.”
The Merman turned the gears on the dagger, which started to vibrate rapidly. He took another look at the writhing seaweed behind him, ready to turn and leave.
At that moment, he suddenly felt a strong force pushing his body, sending him hurtling forward and crashing into a cyan-black stone pillar.
He must have broken at least two bones, he thought, just as he had managed to get up when he saw a person appearing in front of him.
This person looked different from the Merman and his companions. The Merman had only seen such creatures from the Foreign Domain in the slave markets of his world, and in his mind, they were a symbol of backwardness and lowliness.
Yet the person before him didn’t give off that vibe at all.
He was much taller than the Merman, and although he held nothing in his hands, he exuded an impressive deterrent force.
The man’s unnaturally pallid skin gave off a sickly aura. He drew close to the Merman, and his fingers seemed to twitch.
An inexplicable melody suddenly rang out in the Merman’s head.
“Good Fortune Comes, wishing you Good Fortune Comes, bringing joy and love…”
“What is this…”
The Merman couldn’t understand those sounds; although the melody was noisy and unpleasant to his ears, he couldn’t make it fade away.
He felt terror, surprise, and fear, as he tried to struggle.
Until, the Merman saw that horrifying beast, the Hunter that could kill its target by traveling through time and space, come from afar. It circled twice at the feet of the man, and then, contrary to what the Merman had imagined, it didn’t devour the man. Instead, it affectionately rubbed against his trouser leg.
The Merman’s worldview collapsed.
Is this what a [Metamorphosis] level monster is like?
This vicious Hunter, who had killed two Chosen by Gods with ease, was groveling like a pet to this man.
So, this man…
The Merman had fallen into lethal despair when suddenly, silver smoke flowed from the man’s mouth, eyes, nose, and ears, gathering beside him to form the figure of another person.
“It feels quite wonderful.”
Lu Ban glanced at Feng Yu beside him.
Naturally dressed in her original clothes, Feng Yu didn’t respond to Lu Ban’s words, but instead approached the Merman who had “Good Fortune Comes” occupying his whole mind and lifted her right hand.
After a pause, Feng Yu turned her head towards Lu Ban.
“Are you sure you want to watch? It might be a bit hard to accept.”
“Could this possibly scare me?”
Lu Ban was skeptical.
Immediately after, he saw Feng Yu’s hand transform into silver smoke, which formed tentacle-like entities that rapidly penetrated the Merman’s body.
The Merman rolled his eyes back, his whole body began convulsing violently.
Then, from Feng Yu’s body, more silver tentacles stretched out, and in Lu Ban’s True Sight, the Feng Yu in front of him was no longer a human but a combination of flesh and tentacles, with those tentacles extending from beneath her clothing, siphoning the Merman’s brain.
After a moment, Feng Yu suddenly opened her mouth.
Her originally pale pink lips turned into a huge maw full of tentacles, and Feng Yu’s mouth opened wide, much larger than her head, as those silver tentacles lifted the Merman up. Feng Yu slowly devoured the creature, and only after the maw closed and all the tentacles retracted did Feng Yu return to her human form.
After wiping the corners of her mouth with a handkerchief, Feng Yu looked at Lu Ban.
“I told you, it might be somewhat hard to accept.”
“Does it taste good?”
Lu Ban couldn’t help asking.
“Does Merman taste more like fish, or more like human?”
“… It’s like seafood.”
Feng Yu hesitated for a moment before answering.
“By consuming these creatures, I can gain a portion of their memories and knowledge. Of course, I also take on the corresponding Pollution, just to a lesser extent.”
She lifted her hand, and her originally fair skin was now covered with scales, much like the cursed Merman.
Thinking about it now, the large mouth on Feng Yu’s chest before might also have appeared because she had devoured a similar creature.
Now, all three Chosen by Gods had been dealt with, and clearly, their mission had likely failed as well.
But Lu Ban knew their work was not yet finished.
To sink this city, they had to completely destroy the scene.
“So… shall we go down and have a look?”
Lu Ban pointed to that large door.
