Chapter 289: 288. Let’s travel together! (Monthly ticket extra update!)_1 Chapter 289: 288. Let’s travel together! (Monthly ticket extra update!)_1 Subconsciously, Lu Ban’s hand materialized “Testament.”
Feng Yu, having been replaced once, might very well be replaced a second time.
Who knows if the person standing before Lu Ban now is really her.
“Don’t be tense.”
The corners of Feng Yu’s mouth curled upwards even more, as if mocking Lu Ban for making a mountain out of a molehill.
“It’s just a little pollution, like the plants on your body, within a controllable range of mutation.”
She stepped back, straightening her collar, and to all appearances, Feng Yu was indistinguishable from any other human.
“This is the price of acquiring knowledge. If this body suffers too much pollution, I might have to switch to a new one sooner. Perhaps the next time we meet, I could be Qin Tiantian.”
Feng Yu spoke softly about these terrifying matters.
“…”
Lu Ban was at a loss for words.
After spending time with Feng Yu, one would subconsciously overlook certain things.
For instance, the Feng Yu right now is not genuinely human; she merely masquerades as one, living among us.
As a being capable of crossing into the Foreign Domain and replacing someone else, Feng Yu’s values are necessarily different from those of ordinary humans.
To Feng Yu, a body is merely a vessel that can be freely exchanged; consciousness, or rather the soul, is the true self. For her, a body is like clothes to humans: cherished if lovely, but if damaged beyond repair, then naturally, it can only be discarded or turned into a rag for scrubbing floors.
“Just kidding.”
Seeing Lu Ban’s silent response, Feng Yu narrowed her eyes again.
“Only if she meets with an unexpected death would I possibly become her.”
“That makes it even more terrifying, you know.”
Lu Ban couldn’t help but retort; however, from this conversation with Feng Yu, he vaguely grasped some important knowledge.
That is the way Feng Yu’s species avoids pollution.
Normally, when a creature acquires knowledge, it becomes polluted, resulting in eventual mutation of the body. But Feng Yu’s species can switch bodies, even using bodies from other species to completely take over a person’s life.
Therefore, Feng Yu can use “Feng Yu’s” body to gain knowledge and endure pollution until it becomes unbearable, at which point, she abandons that body for another vessel.
In doing so, Feng Yu is able to gain more knowledge while minimizing pollution.
Of course, Feng Yu’s own psyche is unquestionably exposed to many pollutants, but such a level of psychological pollution doesn’t seem to intimidate her; probably each species has its own threshold.
People from the north might scream at the sight of southern cockroaches, while those from the south might think, “Is that all?”—a difference in thresholds.
The present Lu Ban is like a northerner seeing a giant southern cockroach that has started flying, only to watch Feng Yu squash it with a slipper, even inspecting the squished corpse oozing white pulp under the shoe.
“… Is this your species’ way of resisting pollution and acquiring knowledge?”
Thinking this, Lu Ban couldn’t help but ask.
Feng Yu didn’t answer, just blinked.
Even this matter was a form of knowledge that came with its own contamination.
If Feng Yu were to tell Lu Ban directly, it would also bring some irreversible corrosion to him.
In the Silent Lands, knowing too much is truly not a good thing.
“So, the deeper reasons you mentioned earlier, you can’t tell me directly either, can you?”
Lu Ban pressed on.
“That’s right, but I can take you to see it,”
Feng Yu nodded slightly.
Just as she had shown Lu Ban the Horror Cinema located in her own world last time, Feng Yu could impart knowledge to him by showing it directly to Xiang Luvan.
“Do you have time one month from now, in early July? I mean, time to go abroad.”
Feng Yu asked.
“Abroad? Where to?”
Lu Ban asked subconsciously.
“The West Pacific.”
After thinking for a moment, Feng Yu continued.
“Do you know about the incident with the Star Cluster cruise ship?”
“Is that the one that was trapped by a typhoon and then caught fire?”
Lu Ban immediately recalled the reports he had seen in the news.
Many tourists from Jiangcheng were aboard that cruise ship, which got stranded on an island called Pohnpei in the West Pacific due to a typhoon and eventually caught fire due to an accident, causing significant casualties. Many of the tourists had only returned to the country at the beginning of this year, and Lu Ban had previously seen a disturbed tourist at the psychiatric hospital in Jiangcheng who had become mentally unstable due to the trauma.
“Now there’s a ghost ship appearing in the West Pacific. According to descriptions by fishermen who have seen it, the ghost ship looks identical to the Star Cluster, which was destroyed by the fire and sank to the ocean floor, only there’s no one on board. When this ship appears, it is surrounded by thick fog, and sometimes there are strong winds and waves. No fishermen have ever boarded this ship, but in the weeks following the reports of the ghost ship, two fishing vessels disappeared, and more than ten fishermen went missing.”
Feng Yu said succinctly.
“Why are they so sure it’s the Star Cluster? Couldn’t it be some other ship, and the fishermen got it wrong?”
Lu Ban was curious.
“Even though the ship’s hull has ‘Star Cluster’ written on it, and there are photos for comparison, I would say it’s the Star Cluster because I have been aboard that ship to confirm it,”
Feng Yu said lightly.
“Are your wounds because of this?”
Lu Ban wasn’t sure if “wounds” was the right way to describe the changes in Feng Yu.
“You could say that,”
Feng Yu nodded, then continued.
“The Star Cluster may have become a weirdness of this world. By exploring its cause, we can gain more knowledge about this world, or more precisely, the Silent Lands.”
“A ghost ship…”
Lu Ban mused to himself.
In horror movies, ghost ships were a classic setting. Whether it was the cruise that trapped people in an endless loop, the one where a single cable once cut through the bodies of people on a deck, or the elusive Black Pearl, ships drifting in the vast ocean always exuded a mysterious and eerie aura.
That being said, perhaps the various mysterious rumors in this world are not unfounded but rather the projections of weirdness over long years of history. Since the Horror Cinema is real, it wouldn’t be strange for a ghost ship to possess the Star Cluster.
Understanding the true causes and processes of the weirdness was also part of Lu Ban’s duty to protect this world. Even without the pollution from the Foreign Domain, the inherent weirdness of this world could harm others. If left unchecked, perhaps one day this place could become a wasteland like the ruins of the Wasteland.
“No problem, I will arrange the time,”
Lu Ban promised. Most of his work could now be handled by people in his company, allowing him to focus on learning and exploring the world. A one or two-week trip to the West Pacific was certainly feasible.
“So, I’m really looking forward to our first trip together,”
Feng Yu winked, and Lu Ban noticed something like tendrils flickering in her eyes.
