Chapter 281: 280. Died on the spot_1 Chapter 281: 280. Died on the spot_1 Arriving at the entrance to the apartment complex, Bai Qiquan glanced around.

This place must be near the university. Living and eating here were very affordable, and the environment wasn’t bad either—it was just that the photo Bai Qiquan had taken before made him somewhat uneasy.

There was indeed a face on the curtain, as if someone was standing right behind it. But in this new apartment, aside from Lu Ban, how could there be anyone else?

Bai Qiquan dared not ask, only feeling jittery as he packed up his stuff and went to report in at Jiangcheng.

He waited at the entrance of the complex for a while and then saw Lu Ban and a girl walking towards him.

The girl looked petite, almost like a middle school student next to Lu Ban. With the weather at the end of May turning a bit hot, she wore a light pink sweatshirt, jeans, and sneakers. Without any explanation, Bai Qiquan’s first thought was that she must be Lu Ban’s younger sister, still attending middle school.

“This is Qin Tiantian. You can think of her as our company’s mascot,”

Lu Ban introduced briefly.

“Mascot my ass, it’s spokesperson, okay? Spokesperson,”

Qin Tiantian immediately retorted.

“…Hello.”

Bai Qiquan didn’t dare to say much or ask further, following the two of them to his new two-bedroom apartment.

“There will be another person living here later on. Two people per room should be fine, right?”

Lu Ban asked.

“No problem, no problem.”

The two rooms were about the same size. He chose the one farther from the main door, set down his luggage, and then returned to the living room.

The curtain that had been pulled open was still there. Bai Qiquan did not see the face on the curtain and hoped it was just an illusion.

“It seems pretty quiet here,”

Bai Qiquan pretended to check out the view outside, glancing behind the curtain, but there was nothing.

“Yeah, usually in this kind of complex, many units are renovated for renting out, but you don’t have to worry about that here.”

Lu Ban added.

“Because all these floors have been renovated?”

Bai Qiquan turned and asked.

“Not really. It’s because I bought all these floors,”

Lu Ban immediately replied.

“???”

Bai Qiquan looked at Lu Ban seriously.

“Don’t panic. Stay calm. It’s basic procedure,”

Qin Tiantian reminded him from the side.

Bai Qiquan nodded blankly, utterly baffled by Lu Ban’s train of thought.

It wasn’t until he went to the bedroom to sort his things that Qin Tiantian pulled Lu Ban to a corner and whispered,

“Did you really buy it?”

“It wasn’t that much money.”

Lu Ban replied as if it were a matter of course.

An apartment here only cost three or four million; even buying several floors wouldn’t cost him a billion. To Lu Ban, it was a bargain.

“…”

Qin Tiantian felt that Lu Ban’s concept of money was quite problematic. After thinking for a bit, she then said,

“Then you might as well buy the apartment I’m renting too, so I won’t have to pay rent in the future.”

“Hmm?”

Lu Ban made a questioning sound.

“When did you start to have the illusion that the rent you were paying wasn’t going to me?”

“Ah?”

Qin Tiantian was momentarily at a loss for words.

So this guy not only bought the apartment she was renting but also hadn’t told her about it and was still accepting her rent for months?

Could a person really do such a thing?

“You, you, you, you—you, Lu Ban, doesn’t your conscience hurt?”

Qin Tiantian accused.

“No rush. Actually, you’re not paying the rent to me,”

Lu Ban spoke again.

“…Don’t lie to me.”

Qin Tiantian said skeptically.

“Really, you pay your rent to the agent, and the agency settles with me every few months, so technically your rent doesn’t directly go into my hands,”

Lu Ban said earnestly.

“I want to find a train to hit you right now!”

Qin Tiantian fumed.

“I’m doing this for your own good,” he explained earnestly. “If one could lie around without worries about food or clothes and still count money, that person would inevitably lose motivation, eventually grow weary of everything, and become a muddled mess of a human being.”

Lu Ban explained earnestly.

“Fuck it, I want to be that muddled mess of a human being, my greatest dream in life is to be a ‘salted fish’!”

Qin Tiantian gently punched Lu Ban.

“Am I interrupting you guys?”

Bai Qiquan’s voice came from the doorway.

Qin Tiantian immediately stepped several paces away from Lu Ban.

“No problem at all.”

Lu Ban glanced at the time.

“You don’t need to go to the company today. Report there tomorrow morning. Besides you, a few others should be arriving over the next couple of days. We’ll allocate living spaces then.”

With that, Lu Ban and Qin Tiantian left the room.

After tidying up the bed and cleaning the room, Bai Qiquan sent a message to his girlfriend, strolled downstairs for a while, had dinner, bought some daily necessities, and returned to his room.

As soon as he entered the door, he noticed the living room curtains had been drawn up at some point.

“Strange…”

Bai Qiquan put down his things and opened the curtains.

Outside the window, a face was staring at him.

The face was pale, devoid of color as if it belonged to a corpse that had been dead for a long time, its eyes dull and lifeless, and just making eye contact made one feel despair and discomfort.

“Holy shit!!!”

Bai Qiquan shuddered, taking a step back.

However, when he looked out the window again, he only saw his reflection in the glass.

After dark, the indoor lights turned the glass into a mirror-like state, reflecting his own face.

“Did I see it wrong…”

Bai Qiquan muttered to himself.

He returned to the bedroom and looked at the windows—lights were on across the way, exuding a sense of vibrant life.

“This complex is really quite nice.”

Bai Qiquan drew the curtains, planning to take a good shower.

As he gathered his clothes, he felt something was off.

“When did I put these clothes in the wardrobe?”

Looking at the neatly arranged wardrobe, Bai Qiquan felt increasingly uneasy.

Carrying his change of clothes, he entered the bathroom and glanced at the mirror.

His reflection looked normal, without any anomalies.

He began to shower, and after washing his hair, Bai Qiquan grabbed a towel, wiped his face, and suddenly felt a sense of incongruity.

“Hm?”

An indescribable sense of incongruity enveloped Bai Qiquan as he looked at his reflection in the mirror. Ordinary, nothing abnormal.

But the more he washed, the more he felt something was wrong.

After he finished showering, turned off the shower, and got dressed, Bai Qiquan took another look at himself in the mirror.

His hair was wet, and there were water droplets on his face; nothing seemed out of place.

“An illusion?”

Bai Qiquan stepped out of the bathroom, did laundry, turned on the computer, played a couple of games, and watched some videos.

After video chatting with his girlfriend and exchanging goodnight wishes, he sneaked in two more games on an alternate account before lying down to sleep.

Some classmates might ask, if you’ve already said goodnight, why aren’t you sleeping and still secretly playing games?

Those who’ve never been in a relationship might not understand, but typically, after couples say goodnight, they don’t actually go to sleep. It’s during this time that they have undisturbed, quality time to themselves.

So Bai Qiquan was fairly certain that his girlfriend was definitely on her phone too.

Just as he put down his phone, the room plunged into darkness, and the quiet atmosphere made Bai Qiquan’s thoughts flow more freely. He finally figured out the source of the earlier sense of discord.

“I showered with hot water, so there should’ve been a layer of mist on the mirror. But when I finished washing my hair, it was clean, without any fog.”

“Also, when I was washing my hair, I clearly received the towel from somewhere, but there should be only me in this room, right?”

“So…”

In the quiet darkness, Bai Qiquan could only hear his own heartbeat.

Thump—

Thump—

Thump-thump—

Intermixed with it seemed to be another heartbeat.

“???”

Bai Qiquan couldn’t sleep anymore.
