Chapter 269 - 269 268. Spirit Torch_1
Chapter 269: 268. Spirit Torch_1 Chapter 269: 268. Spirit Torch_1 The only difficulty the frost tide encountered was when it neared the fortress.
The Winter Wolf at the forefront had not realized what had happened when it leaped into the area illuminated by the Spirit Torches,
and in a moment, the Winter Wolf burst as if it were hit by something sturdy and penetrated, with flesh and blood splattering and its half-transparent, ice-like bones falling to the ground.
The Winter Wolves fell one after another.
More Winter Wolves were killed by the brilliance of the Spirit Torches, yet even more came surging in succession.
Their flesh froze in a moment, forming a splendid and radiant forest of ice, but this did not stop the advance of the Winter Wolves.
The silver tide thinned out considerably, but it continued to approach.
The light from these Spirit Torches formed another silver boundary line, holding back the frost tide slightly.
If it weren’t for the Mages igniting the Spirit Torches like kindling, the mere onslaught of these Demonic Beasts would have been enough to crumble the frontlines of the fortress, and humanity would be utterly unable to resist this overwhelming flood.
Lu Ban’s first reaction was to recall the insect invasions from sci-fi movies.
But these monsters were far more terrifying than any swarm of insects.
When the frost vanguard was less than a kilometer away from the Black Fort, the Forest Rangers released the second volley of stone-throwers.
The massive stones split in midair, turning into countless smaller pebbles.
These stones transformed into golden droplets raining down upon the Winter Wolves that had entered the Spirit Torches’ radiance.
In almost an instant, the Winter Wolves halted their advance, their bodies pierced through, blood dyeing the frostbound forest before quickly congealing.
But the Winter Wolves behind them charged forward again.
In the face of overwhelming numbers, even resistance seemed pale and weak.
“Mages, follow me.”
Inside the Black Fort, a Mage gathered a dozen others and rushed towards the dome.
Atop the watchtower, a ring of invisible barriers lit up around the Mages, warding off the snowstorm and bitter cold as they stood behind the stone platform, raising their hands.
The air in their palms distorted visually from the tremendous force, and a buzzing noise from air friction filled the surroundings, growing louder as the following Winter Wolves drew closer to the fortress within eight hundred meters.
Then, some invisible force was thrown out from the Mages’ hands.
In the blink of an eye, that invisible force traversed the eight hundred meters and exploded upon impact with the ground.
Boom Boom Boom—
The massive explosions erupted on the flat terrain, mushroom clouds rose, grinding more Winter Wolves into minced meat, leaving no intact bones to be seen.
Amidst the continuous explosions, the master of the Demonic Tide howled again.
Simultaneously, Lu Ban noticed something writhing in the shadows of those Winter Wolves.
Eternal Night was advancing alongside the Frost.
Those shadows moved faster than the Winter Wolves, and though they would disintegrate under the illumination of the Spirit Torches, they swiftly approached the fortress by utilizing the shadows cast by trees, the bodies of dead Winter Wolves, and the smoke from the explosions.
When the frost vanguard was five hundred meters from the fortress, the Longbowmen unleashed arrows ignited with Spell Fire in unison.
As the arrows landed on the ground, they immediately formed a barrier of flames.
These flames were clearly different from common ones; even under the chill of frost, they were difficult to extinguish, causing the Winter Wolves enveloped by the raging inferno to quickly lose their footing and fall, becoming fuel for that wall of fire.
But there were just too many Winter Wolves.
There was even a moment when Lu Ban felt that even if weapons of mass destruction like nuclear bombs were used to scour the land, it would likely be impossible to completely eliminate these Winter Wolves and hold back the Demonic Tide.
The numbers were simply overwhelming.
Perhaps only an extinction order from a science fiction work could turn the entire forest and Night Country into scorched earth and possibly shatter them completely.
If it weren’t for facing such a desperate situation, maybe the Night Country wouldn’t have adopted such a strategy, willing to sacrifice countless Mages as kindling just for a moment of tenacious survival.
What was even more terrifying was that this was only one of the twelve Demonic Tides.
“The stacking of Demonic Tides indicates a much more severe problem,”
Jonah, within the hall, looked solemnly at his colleagues who were burning out and sighed deeply.
“Different Demonic Tides are the minions of different Evil Gods, and they are naturally opposing forces. That’s why there has always been only one Demonic Tide attacking at a time before, because even if two were to arise simultaneously, they would engage in infighting before reaching the border of the Black Forest, leaving only one in the end.”
“But now it’s different.”
Lu Ban saw that, despite suffering various attacks, the number of Winter Wolves had not diminished and their torrential momentum showed no signs of weakening, making it hard not to feel desperate.
“If different Demonic Tides can coexist, it either means the Evil Gods have started to cooperate, or it means a victor has been decided among them.”
Jonah spoke of the worst possible outcome.
Just as the strange occurrences in Lu Ban’s world had gradually begun to affect people’s real lives, the Night Country’s Demonic Tides were evolving; at last, perhaps those Divine Beings would unite. By then, the simultaneous arrival of the twelve Demonic Tides would spell the true Doomsday for the Night Country.
In the distance, a shining light had gone out.
Lu Ban’s True Sight revealed the details of the fortress’s fall.
The Winter Wolves broke through the protection of the Spirit Torches; those towering Winter Wolves, as tall as a small building, froze the air with just a breath, shattering the fortress’s magical barriers. Then, despite the Forest Rangers’ resistance, compared to the vast number of Winter Wolves, their defiance was futile.
In less than three minutes, the entire fortress went silent.
Suddenly, at the moment when the light of the Spirit Torches went out, a sun rose.
It was the most splendid sun Lu Ban had ever seen, its golden light offering hope and warmth, reminding people of all things beautiful.
All the Winter Wolves, the shadows of the Eternal Night, crumbled under the sunlight. A heat, exceeding the range of the Spirit Torches’ radiation, descended, flickering and then extinguished.
“That is the Eternal Sunlight; when the fortress fell, they did not hesitate, immediately activated the spell, and used themselves as the fuel to create such an effect,”
Jonah closed his eyes as if in prayer.
The Winter Wolves had come within three hundred meters of Black Keep’s defenses.
The rain of crossbow bolts fell like droplets of water, only slightly reducing the momentum of the Demonic Tide. In less than ten seconds, the forefront of the Demonic Tide would collide head-on with Black Keep!
At all the windows of the Black Keep, there were more than one Crossbowman standing, and atop the dome, Mages continued to cast spells. But it was like a child swinging fists at a tsunami, only stirring up spray but utterly powerless to hold back the tide.
Like a slow-motion, silent movie, the silver-white Frost Demonic Tide crashed into the Black Keep Fortress, and the overall advance briefly stalled.
The entire fortress trembled.
Jonah clenched his fists and looked around.
But Ke Luban had already vanished.
