Chapter 267: 266. When the Demonic Tide Rises_1 Chapter 267: 266. When the Demonic Tide Rises_1 The harsh, cold wind carried with it polluted black smoke, emitting a stifling stench that engulfed the fortress.
The tearful gloomy skies seemed to be devouring all the sunlight, gradually dimming.
In the distance, beyond the barrier of the raging fire, darkness covered the forest.
The first thing that caught one’s attention was the wolf howls.
The piercing sounds penetrated the heart, triggering the deepest fears of humanity.
A gale wind suddenly swept through.
From the watchtower, one could see the dense canopy of the Black Forest swaying like ocean waves, undulating and, accompanied by the wolf howls, the tide of the Sea of Trees surged toward the direction of Black Fort.
All at once, the darkness expanded.
Even from afar, one could hear the sound of trees shattering.
The trees covered by the shadows disintegrated in an instant, their remnants spiraling and fluttering with the winter chill in the sky, as if one could see the actual body of the gale wind.
And indeed, it was so.
Accompanied by the increasingly darkening sky, the gale wind seemingly took on a physical form.
It was a majestic cloud curtain that Lu Ban had never seen in his life, stretching across the Black Forest like a wall, with clouds visibly swirling within it. If it were on Earth, it would definitely be a super typhoon surpassing all other super typhoons.
Such a vast storm was so immense that one couldn’t possibly take in its entirety at a glance.
The skies had completely darkened.
A blood-red moon had risen at some unknown time.
Seductively bloody, like congealed blood, the light of the Blood Moon poured down, casting an eerie red hue over the entire Black Keep Fortress.
The air grew colder and colder, with frost quickly forming on the leaves, cutting like knives with the wind.
“The Demonic Tide is here,” Jonah said, half in lamentation, half in shock.
“Back to Black Fort. After the Frost arrives, the air here will drop to an extremely low temperature where water will turn into ice in a short moment.”
Lu Ban saw a flock of scattered birds in the distance. As they were caught in that seemingly tangible gale, the birds froze into ice sculptures mid-air and were swept away by the wind, soaring into the sky.
As the wind swept over the top of the forest, one could see the swaying treetops suddenly freeze, fixed in their tilted state.
Even the raging forest fire was instantly frozen, and the rapid freezing caused the sound to disappear, death spread, silent and swift.
Those outside the fortress immediately dropped what they were holding and ran frantically toward the fortress.
Lu Ban and Jonah also ran toward the fortress.
Glancing back, Lu Ban saw that the wind was now just inches away.
Hum—
The cold wind struck the fortress’s magical barrier, and a layer of white frost instantly formed on the outside of the invisible barrier. However, it couldn’t completely block the gale wind; quite a few Forest Rangers running behind were lifted off their feet and thrown high into the air.
But the only thing that might be considered fortunate was that they died of the severe cold shortly after leaving the ground, not having to endure the subsequent pain.
Lu Ban and Jonah rushed through the fortress’s slowly closing gates.
With the closing of the gates, the cold and terrifying spectacle seemed to vanish momentarily.
But immediately afterward, a loud bang erupted.
Bang—
It was as if something was battering the fortress, causing the entire structure to shake.
Lu Ban and Jonah reached the lookout, where they could see, despite the magic barrier’s hindrance, the wind carrying stones, wood chips, and soil continued to batter the fortress. Large boulders carried by the cold wind crashed against the barrier, some blocked by the magical barrier, while others penetrated it, hitting the dome of the fortress and shaking the entire building.
Suddenly, all sound vanished.
Lu Ban could only watch as the “slowly” spinning giant storm gradually expanded, its cloud almost obscuring the Blood Moon.
Then, darkness fell.
Silently, the darkness spread.
The frozen trees, the falling stones, the animals transformed into ice sculptures, all were engulfed by darkness.
The world suddenly turned into black and white.
Lu Ban could see nothing with his naked eye, only the endless darkness that covered the entire forest.
The crystal atop Black Keep Fortress emitted light, trying to dispel the darkness, but the light was devoured by the monster, unable to penetrate any further.
The storm moved towards the fortress, suffocating.
“The spell barrier won’t hold for long, and soon we’ll be facing a head-on battle with the demonic beasts, which, of course, is the best-case scenario,”
Jonah said with a self-deprecating laugh.
“What’s the worse-case scenario?”
Instinctively, Lu Ban asked, but he quickly realized the answer for himself.
“If our defenses are breached, it won’t take an hour for the Clan of Eternal Night to devour the people in this fortress, not to mention with this cold snap, the pestilence might have already crept in. Even if Frost doesn’t manifest, just these two waves of the Demonic Tide would cost us more than a third of our people,”
Jonah spoke the grim numbers.
“I need to man my post now, mages still have some use at times like this.”
Just then, Lu Ban saw a light flare up in the boundless darkness.
It was at a position almost level with Black Keep Fortress, a great distance from here, a beam of light like a sword piercing through the darkness.
“That’s another fortress; there are over a thousand fortresses of this scale, and the number of smaller fortresses is five times that. These fortresses make up the final defense line of Hei Tower.”
As Jonah spoke, more beams of light shot into the sky.
Some columns of light were so thin that they were almost swallowed by the darkness, while others were so broad they could illuminate the surrounding area.
If one could look down from high above Black Forest at this moment, they would see countless points of light twinkling and flickering like stars in the forest that surrounded and lit up the area of human civilization.
These were the stars of human civilization.
“Gray Tower’s ultimate defense spells, once those lights go out, the darkness will completely engulf us, meaning if any light goes out, that fortress has fallen,”
Jonah was already walking up the stairs.
Lu Ban followed him.
The howling of wolves came once again.
“Eternal Night can’t breach this spell, but Frost can. Tangible entities can directly destroy a fortress, and that’s the reason we must guard this place.”
Jonah arrived at the hall above the fortress.
Aside from the mages, the fortress’s commander was there, and Lu Ban saw that the commanding officer of the scouting unit was also present.
In the middle of the hall, three stone high-back chairs stood back to back.
On the high-back chairs, three mages were already seated.
However, they did not look like leaders, but rather…
Lu Ban saw that the young mage was in agony and contorted, with his eyes rolled back, his body convulsing, almost as if he was using his last will to keep himself seated on the chair.
He was ablaze.
Those silver-white flames used the mage’s body as fuel, heatless, yet they lit up the hall.
Three pillars of flame rose and intertwined, soaring towards the dome, where they were released from the flames and surged upwards, breaking through the fortress, charging towards the sky.
Now Lu Ban understood how the columns of light that sheltered the fortresses were generated.
