Chapter 260 - 260 259. Small-Scale Catastrophe Generator_1
Chapter 260: 259. Small-Scale Catastrophe Generator_1 Chapter 260: 259. Small-Scale Catastrophe Generator_1 A small radio appeared in Lu Ban’s hand.
The radio was about the size of a palm, with only a simple knob and no other switches.
The moment he got the radio, all knowledge about it clung to Lu Ban’s brain like a spider web, infusing him with information he could never forget.
He understood the use of the “Small-Scale Catastrophe Generator.”
Firstly, the knob on the radio had different scales, including thunderstorms, blizzards, earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, and other natural disasters.
Beyond those scales, there was also an option for clear weather.
Additionally, the text on two of the scales was worn off, so it was unclear what they specified.
To use it, one simply needed to turn the knob from its original position to the corresponding setting, and a catastrophe could be created within several kilometers of the radio.
One might ask why such an impressive item could be bought for only eighty thousand. There were, in fact, two major drawbacks.
First and most important, the induced catastrophe would be centered on the radio, meaning that to use it, one invariably had to be at the heart of the violent natural disaster and face the danger directly.
Second, the radio itself required charging, which was done by enduring the brunt of natural disasters. In other words, if the knob was turned to one of the disasters, the radio could operate indefinitely, constantly creating extreme weather in a certain area.
Currently, without exposure to a disaster, the radio could be used uncharged twice.
“At least it ensures that I can put up a fight when facing a large number of monsters.”
He himself wasn’t too concerned; storms could replenish moisture for plants, and lightning could bring nitrogen from the air into the soil, adding nutrients. From this perspective, the grass inside Lu Ban might prefer thunderstorm weather.
Lu Ban put away the radio.
“There will definitely be a shortage of food at the frontier of the Black Forest, so I should bring more to eat.”
He quickly purchased a batch of tasty canned food and put it into his backpack.
He also bought a set of thick clothes suitable for field marching and put them on.
After sending a message to Feng Yu and the others, Lu Ban picked up the crowbar and opened the System’s interface.
Having experienced the bountiful rewards of [Mutation] difficulty, Lu Ban felt he could no longer accept the “trickle” from [Corrosion] difficulty; he had become completely shaped by [Mutation] difficulty and couldn’t extricate himself from it.
Therefore, he resolutely chose [Mutation] difficulty.
“Speaking of which, how will these difficulty levels manifest in the Foreign Domain?”
Lu Ban suddenly became curious.
In games, difficulties mostly affect monsters’ HP, damage, and sometimes abilities and types, but it was unlikely that the missions in the Silent Lands could change the biological patterns of the Foreign Domain, right?
Could it be a difference in the starting locations?
Like this mission, it seemed that the deployment of Hei Tower in the Black Forest had a distinction between the front lines and the rear areas—perhaps [Mutation] difficulty meant being right at the front line, while [Mortal] difficulty meant guarding the supply depot far in the rear.
Oh, there’s no [Mortal] difficulty, so never mind.
Lu Ban saw that the lowest difficulty for this mission was [Contamination], which meant that merely by entering the mission’s Foreign Domain, one might suffer the Pollution of indescribable entities. It could be considered a rather difficult mission.
Honestly, even on Earth, when facing a pack of wolves or beasts, not even a group of well-trained soldiers is guaranteed a safe retreat, let alone in a Foreign Domain.
This level of difficulty was reasonable.
In his view, the image on the computer suddenly enlarged, and a biting cold wind blew in from the depths of the forest, making Lu Ban shiver involuntarily.
The howling of some monster rang in his ears as text made of ice and snow emerged.
[Do you wish to enter the Silent Lands]
[Yes/No]
Lu Ban reached out and touched [Yes].
For a moment, the blizzard intensified, blinding him, and Lu Ban felt as if his limbs had frozen, even his breath turned to frost.
Lu Ban could feel his blood rapidly growing cold as the surrounding was engulfed by the wind and snow.
[Time in the Silent Lands flows differently from the outside world]
[The time ratio for this journey is: 1.5:1]
[Heading towards the Night Country]
A burst of cold vanished for an instant and Lu Ban heard the haunting howl of the monster lingering in his ears, unable to fade away as the scenery of pure white and pitch black intertwined around him, embellished with dark red glow.
Lu Ban felt dizzy, and despite having experienced numerous journeys to foreign domains, this sense of vertigo was inescapable, a sensation not merely of weightlessness but of being stripped from one world and repelled as he entered another.
When he came to his senses, Lu Ban felt his cheek cool with ice.
He found himself crawling in the snow, the warmth of his cheek having melted part of the ice and snow, forming a moist trickle.
Lu Ban did not act rashly but looked around as he got up.
The person in a gray-white cloak was not far from him, similarly crawling in the snow, hiding amongst the vast white like statues.
This was a forest where towering trees, more robust than any he had ever seen, loomed throughout. The trunks of each tree were over three meters wide, and were less like trees and more akin to stone pillars reaching for the sky.
Among these stout trees were smaller ones which, although “small,” were larger than most trees Lu Ban had seen. The vibrant life of this forest wasn’t diminished by the snow; however, in this silence, something far more dangerous seemed to be brewing.
Lu Ban saw that the person beside him held a crossbow, aiming ahead; he glanced at his side and found a crossbow there too.
Without much scrutiny, Lu Ban quickly mastered the operation of the crossbow.
Some say the use of crossbows signified the decline of the age of knights, reflecting how a crossbowman with a few days’ training could easily kill a finely equipped knight. Indeed, there seemed to be some truth to that.
In a flash of inspiration, he stared ahead, where something seemed to be approaching from the gloom, bringing a dangerous presence, like a lurking predator.
Lu Ban could feel the tremors of the earth, as beings not of the human kind drew near.
The next moment, Lu Ban heard a low growl.
Surprisingly, the sound came directly in front of him, no more than five meters away.
Before this, Lu Ban had not detected any creatures there.
He then saw a beast resembling a wolf or dog, only with six legs, like a large insect, its grey fur marred with filth, and from where its eyes should be, four pupils glowed blood red. It bared its fangs and lunged at Lu Ban.
At the same time, Lu Ban saw the snowflakes whirling up, forming the System’s cold, indifferent text.
[Night Country]
[In the year of prosperity and frosted leaves, the Blood Moon approaches]
[The prophecy of the Obelisk of Prophecy comes true, the Demonic Tide approaches, Hei Tower’s outposts light up their beacons, the candlelight of civilization flickers in the dark forest]
[In the fortress deep within the Decayed Forest, an unusual mutation occurs, possibly more terrifying than the swarming monsters of the Demonic Tide, are the hearts of people]
[Pick up your weapon, in the midst of snow and ice, only the warmth of metal can bring comfort]
[Mission requirement: Survive until the end of the Demonic Tide]
[Difficulty: Mutation]
