Chapter 244: 243. A combination of work and rest is not bad_1 Chapter 244: 243. A combination of work and rest is not bad_1 The face looked somewhat aged, with wrinkles at the corners of the eyes, and for some reason, it also looked a bit familiar.
“Aren’t you leaving work?”
The other person even started to talk.
That’s when Mo Guangyuan realized this was the security guard, Old Man Qin, from the office building.
“I’ll leave in a bit, I’ll leave in a bit.”
Actioning the movie, Mo Guangyuan hastily took off his headphones and answered.
“It’s good for young people to work hard, but you also need to balance work and rest, you know. Working overtime like this, others wouldn’t be able to handle it.”
Old Man Qin remarked.
“Okay, sure.”
Mo Guangyuan originally thought that everything in this office was routine; he hadn’t expected that even working overtime would be discussed by a group of people.
Only by “lying flat” could one truly understand the way of survival here.
He was about to put his headphones back on when he noticed that Old Man Qin was still standing there, watching him, not looking like he intended to leave.
“What’s up?”
Mo Guangyuan asked.
“Nothing, just having a look.”
Old Man Qin waved his hand.
Mo Guangyuan came back to his senses and figured it was probably because he hadn’t left, and Old Man Qin couldn’t lock the door.
“I’ll leave after I review this film, about half an hour more.”
Mo Guangyuan pointed towards the screen.
“Oh, call me when you leave.”
Old Man Qin then wandered out.
Mo Guangyuan went to the office door, cautiously closed it, put his headphones back on, and resumed the movie.
The protagonists and others found the original manuscript in the novelist’s villa and finally set off toward Beihan Town just like in the novel’s content.
The scene at the car rental was relatively light-hearted, allowing Mo Guangyuan, who had been tormented by the bizarre creatures and oil paintings, to finally get some relief for his sanity.
If the entire film was just like those scenes he had seen earlier, Mo Guangyuan felt he might not have been able to last till the end.
The three travelers soon faced the night, and the scene of driving in the dark was truly unsettling, especially in this horror movie.
Sure enough, halfway through, a problem arose.
While the three of them were cracking jokes, a figure suddenly appeared in front of the car.
With a loud thud, the car struck the figure, skidding to a stop, and the protagonist prepared to check on them.
This violent disruption amidst the cheerful background music made Mo Guangyuan instantly alert; he looked at the person lying on the ground and felt something was odd about them.
The person got up.
He, or rather it, had an appearance that could hardly be called human, more like a white mouse, with its pointed head and all-white body inducing a weird sense of fear. Mo Guangyuan had learned about this—it was an example of the uncanny valley effect.
At the same time, more similar creatures crawled out from the darkness on the side of the road.
These creatures moved at a breakneck pace, using their hands and feet to scuttle across the road.
The person who got out of the car hurried back in, starting an intense chase scene.
Such chase scenes are a staple of big movies, and there are even genre films that rely solely on chase sequences. Watching the monsters chasing behind, Mo Guangyuan, for some reason, started feeling anxious, as if he was also sitting in the car.
“The camera work here is really impressive.”
Mo Guangyuan couldn’t help but comment.
What they used here was probably a first-person handheld camera, looking back at the creatures through the rear window of the car and occasionally looking ahead, creating a sense of tension and impending crisis as if one were right there in the thick of it.
Especially when that monster pounced, Mo Guangyuan thought it was fortunate this was a 2D movie. If it were a 3D film, the audience would probably have really screamed.
As expected, after the car chase scene ended and the monsters were thoroughly shaken off, the three survivors in the car began to converse.
Although it was somewhat impolite, when Mo Guangyuan heard the line, “So the vomit of a beautiful girl also stinks,” he genuinely laughed out loud.
But before his smile could fade, a monster’s head appeared at the car window, the background music abruptly stopped, and the atmosphere of the movie instantly became tense.
Mo Guangyuan had just picked up his goji berry tea, ready to drink, but almost didn’t manage to hold in a spit take.
However, luckily there was no harm done, as amidst the thick darkness surrounding them, the camera caught sight of some people again.
This time it was really people, Mo Guangyuan confirmed. Those people wore suits, and seemed to look different from each other, yet somehow appeared to be the same person. They moved across the road sneakily, tip-toeing as if worried about waking someone.
Those suited individuals stared at the camera with no emotion in their eyes.
Meanwhile, as the car moved forward, their bodies remained still but their necks twisted around, eventually turning their heads entirely.
“Hss—”
Mo Guangyuan watched and subconsciously moved his neck.
A bit sore.
Suddenly, a light shone in front of the car window, the whole screen turned white, and Mo Guangyuan narrowed his eyes slightly. Then he saw a small town appear before him.
Though it looked like an ordinary small town, something about it seemed off, particularly the pointed-roof house in the center of town, which stood out prominently like a church.
At that moment, the girl who had vomited picked up a manuscript, which recorded the movements of the three people as if the novel was being written in tandem with their actions.
Mo Guangyuan became increasingly curious about this novelist, about what was really going on with this novel.
After the car had driven some distance, the sound of a bell ringing was heard, and those eerie people whose necks could twist 180 degrees without issue stared at them while sneakily moving toward the church.
And Lu Ban also stealthily followed them.
“What a sand sculpture.”
Mo Guangyuan laughed. He knew this was another comedic sand sculpture segment.
Watching the three people pretending to imitate those suited individuals as they reached the church, the scene was filled with a sense of black humor. Mo Guangyuan saw that inside the church, a priest was reading a novel that seemed to be another work by the peculiar novelist Ancient Capital.
“Does he think he’s a god who created this world, or is he actually a god?”
Mo Guangyuan pondered as he subconsciously gripped his thermos cup.
Under the priest’s guidance, the three of them arrived at an inn and ordered an assortment of foods.
“You dare eat this?”
Mo Guangyuan thought that if it were him, he definitely wouldn’t dare eat anything in such a strange place.
However, the scene of the three people eating was filmed to look truly delicious, making Mo Guangyuan swallow his saliva.
He hadn’t had dinner yet!
As they ate, Mo Guangyuan suddenly noticed a spider crawling on Lu Ban’s shoulder.
The camera didn’t give the spider a close-up, but Mo Guangyuan saw it clearly. It was a special focusing technique that neither unbalanced the entire frame nor prevented the audience from seeing exactly what the director wanted them to see, thus creating a conflict and contradiction between a peaceful scene and bizarre events.
With the discovery of the spider, the camera also started to pan up toward the ceiling.
For the first time, Mo Guangyuan somewhat regretted staying to watch the entire film.
Because he saw the ceiling was covered with a dense, multicolored, variously-sized mass of spiders, descending from above.
For Mo Guangyuan, one spider could be smashed to death with a slipper.
A swarm of spiders, that was nothing short of disaster.
In an instant, Mo Guangyuan felt his skin breaking out in goosebumps, and he shivered.
Thankfully, the girl had a high fighting capability and burst a bunch of spiders, allowing the protagonists to escape.
Mo Guangyuan let out a sigh of relief and subconsciously looked at the ceiling.
He saw the spiders slowly descending.
