The car made a huge collision noise, and Cui Siter saw the thing he hit fly up, roll off the roof, and he quickly hit the brakes.

“What happened?”

The sound of braking woke Lu Ban, who instinctively reached for his crowbar and looked out the window.

“I just hit something…”

Cui Siter was still shaken, and through the rearview mirror, he saw a person lying on the road behind.

That person was unmoving and seemed to have been struck dead.

“You killed someone, huh.”

Lu Ban said without much emotion.

“What happened?”

Shia opened her eyes, still a bit groggy, her cheeks flushed, unclear of what had happened.

“He suddenly appeared in the middle of the road; how could I have avoided it?”

“You could have braked earlier.”

Lu Ban opened the car door.

“With the speed we were going, even braking wouldn’t have been soon enough, someone had to be hit.”

Cui Siter also unbuckled his seatbelt and got out to check the situation.

The two approached the person who had been hit, while intermittently checking the condition of their vehicle behind them.

It was only when they drew nearer that Cui Siter realized, the person wasn’t wearing white clothing, but was actually naked.

The person was grayish-white all over, bare-skinned; Lu Ban was very familiar with this figure—it was a Ratman.

“Ratman, this is a Ratman, a kind of humanoid monster.”

Cui Siter was shocked, and at the same time, he saw the Ratman that had been lying on the ground unmoving suddenly twitch, and then slowly got up.

“There’s a saying in the Abandoned Capital: when you see one Ratman, it means there is a group around… Run!”

Cui Siter pulled on Lu Ban and turned to flee.

At the same time, several white figures emerged from the darkness around them.

They were all grayish-white, with tiny heads of strange shape, like rodent teeth grinding incessantly; a large crowd of Ratmen surrounded them.

“Let’s hope we don’t run into fish too…”

Lu Ban muttered and took off running.

One of the Ratmen leaped at him, attempting to grab Lu Ban’s legs; without a word, he smashed it with the crowbar in his hand, splitting it open, then kicked it away.

Cui Siter had already climbed into the car and started the engine.

Lu Ban got to the car door and then turned around, conjuring “Testament” in his hand, and randomly firing several shots into the swarm of rushing Ratmen.

The bullets hit several Ratmen at the front, instantly filling their heads with the murmurs of that great existence, losing balance and falling over, tripping up several of their kin behind them.

Lu Ban got back into the passenger seat, and the car hadn’t even started before the door was shut, shooting forward and knocking over a few Ratmen that came charging, and only then did Lu Ban manage to close the door.

“How could these things appear here?”

Cui Siter found it unbelievable. Ratmen were supposed to be creatures found in areas far from the Abandoned Capital. Usually, the only people who saw them were those hunters wandering through the ruins. If Ratmen appeared near the Abandoned Capital, the old masters within the Central Ring surely wouldn’t sit by indifferently.

“Could it be the influence of the mission?”

Lu Ban speculated.

Missions of the [Metamorphosis] difficulty level might cause such occurrences, where monsters appear in places where they normally wouldn’t, and pollution emerges in places that are usually normal.

“These monsters…”

Shia was still disoriented, feeling something rising in her throat, about to vomit.

“If you’re going to throw up, do it outside the window.”

Lu Ban directed her.

Shia immediately opened the car window, and before she could lean out, she couldn’t hold back the contents of her mouth any longer.

“Ugh——”

The mage girl clad in armor vomited, with a small amount ending up inside the car and most of it spraying outside.

“I’ve realized something.”

Lu Ban suddenly spoke seriously.

“What is it?”

Cui Siter tensed up, his grip on the steering wheel was less steady.

“The vomit of a beautiful girl still stinks.”

Lu Ban said seriously.

The car was filled with the sour stench of vomit, and even the wind from speeding couldn’t dispel the odious smell that made everyone want to cover their noses.

“…”

Cui Siter had wanted to say something but felt that if he replied, he’d lose.

“Cough cough cough…”

Shia coughed out the last of her stomach acid and withdrew her head back into the car.

Lu Ban handed her a tissue, and just as the girl had wiped the corner of her mouth, a head suddenly appeared beside the window.

A Ratman was clawing at the window, trying to get inside.

Cui Siter was about to use his free hand to pull out his revolver to help when Shia immediately threw a punch out.

Bang——

That punch seemed to be accompanied by some kind of magic, and the Ratman was sent flying out of the car by the tremendous impact, its head exploding as though it had been blown up from the inside.

Finally, the car entered the deep darkness that had originally surrounded it, and after a period of silence, the three of them confirmed that the Ratmen could no longer keep up.

“At this rate, it feels like we won’t get any rest tonight.”

Cui Siter muttered to himself.

“If you trust me, I can help you drive.”

Lu Ban volunteered bravely.

“Aren’t you unable to drive?”

Cui Siter asked in surprise.

“I’ve played games, um, something like driving. You just floor the gas pedal and hold the steering wheel, it’s quite simple!”

Lu Ban patted his chest in assurance.

“…I’d better drive myself.”

Cui Siter didn’t want to wake up and find himself hanging from a tree.

However, the darkness didn’t last for long.

Suddenly, Cui Siter saw several people seemingly standing by the side of the road.

He instinctively slowed down to take a look.

They were all wearing black suits and hats, holding briefcases, standing ghostly by the roadside, and they didn’t appear to be trying to hitch a ride.

Suddenly, these people started moving, sweeping across the street and glancing at their car.

“What’s this now?”

Lu Ban was curious.

“I’m not sure…”

Cui Siter watched as these people reached the other side of the road, their eyes still fixating on their car continuously, even as their bodies turned, their heads twisted one hundred and eighty degrees to keep staring in their direction.

A chill ran up Cui Siter’s spine.

Before they could explore further, suddenly they were surrounded by light.

After a moment of blindness, the first to regain his vision, Lu Ban, saw the darkness had vanished without a trace, the world bright and sunny, with birds singing and flowers fragrant.

“Has the day broken? How long have we been traveling?”

Shia looked outside the window; the view clearly was that of a residential area, with vegetation, buildings, and smooth roads, and low houses spread out.

“Eh, isn’t there something here?”

Shia, who had just thought of using a spell to clean up the vomit in the car, saw several pages of manuscript papers wedged under the seat.

She reached out to take them, but before she could read them, the car stopped.

“What’s wrong?”

Shia inquired.

“I don’t know, but… it seems like we’ve arrived at our destination.”

Cui Siter stopped the car, and as he looked at the signpost ahead, he felt a wave of disbelief.

The wooden, somewhat old sign had local directions on it.

It read “Beihan Town.”
