I Forged the Myth of the Ancient Overlords -
Chapter 217 - 217 216. Truth Serum (physical)_1
Chapter 217: 216. Truth Serum (physical)_1 Chapter 217: 216. Truth Serum (physical)_1 The shadow quickly materialized into a tangible object, a person, wearing a tattered jacket and pants, holding a black submachine gun, with a ferocious and twisted expression, as if hating everything in the world.
In an instant, the three people seated felt threatened; Cui Siter slightly stood up, Shia raised her right hand, and Lu Ban materialized “Testament” in his hand, adjusting the cartridge of the Speech Bullet to the one designed for high-speed movement.
The person holding the submachine gun curled the corners of his mouth, seemingly saying something to those inside through the glass, then he pulled the trigger.
However, before the first bullet could fly out, he seemed to be struck by something and lurched forward.
Crash—
The transparent glass shattered by the high-speed movement of the person, and the submachine gun, mockingly referred to as a typewriter by the Gang, also lost its aim due to this sudden action.
The next moment, the typewriter that had just spat out two unfocused bullets suddenly disintegrated, transforming from a piece of precision machinery into scattered components, with springs, the bolt, and cartridges flying through the air and falling like raindrops.
Plop—
The man toppled the table in front of Lu Ban, lifting the teacup filled with hot tea, and hit his head on the ground, producing a crisp impact sound.
For a moment, the teahouse descended into chaos.
The grand dames, young masters, and tycoons all stood up one after another, several men wearing black suits and duckbill hats streamed in, protecting the most distinguished of them.
“Is it an attack targeted at them, or…”
Cui Siter put on his gloves and bent over to check the man’s condition; clearly, the man had passed out from the collision.
Turning his head back, Cui Siter was about to ask for Lu Ban’s opinion but saw him still holding a teacup—Lu Ban had been about to drink tea when the assault occurred.
“Can’t waste it.”
Lu Ban poured the steaming tea into his mouth, a deeply fermented and rich flavor of black tea.
Meanwhile, amidst the debris of the overturned table, the System’s cold and indifferent text assembled itself.
“Abandoned Capital”
“New Calendar Year 23, it is inadvisable to proceed with any matter.”
“The glittering high society beckons, but its darkness is unknown to all, people await the new work that can bring a frenzy, as if only such thrills can alleviate the oppression brought by the stagnant air.”
“It is the best of times, it is the worst of times.”
“Between the cracks of fantasy and reality, evil festers.”
“Mission difficulty: Mutation”
“Mission requirement: Find the missing novelist.”
“Mission requirement: Witness the end of the story.”
“Mission requirement: Find Du Danping’s Melody Fragment.”
“It seems the mission has already begun.”
Lu Ban thought to himself that being attacked here was certainly no coincidence under normal circumstances.
The teahouse was still in chaos as sirens began to blare.
The police chief, wearing a dark uniform and sporting a small mustache, arrived with his police officers carrying rifles and standing in a loose formation, just in time to see Cui Siter by the side of the fallen person.
“Old Cui, why is it always you?”
The chief seemed to be acquainted with Cui Siter, his tone carrying a hint of exasperation.
“Isn’t this nice, saving you the trouble of looking for eyewitnesses?”
Cui Siter drew on his pipe and replied indifferently.
“Would the other esteemed gentlemen and ladies please temporarily follow my subordinates and leave this area, we will conduct individual investigations shortly thereafter.”
Chief Huo gestured, and not quite following protocol, began dispersing the crowd.
“Many sitting here are linked with the Gang, and if we casually take them back to the police station, I’m afraid the gangs of Abandoned Capital would besiege the headquarters.”
Cui Siter whispered into the ears of Lu Ban and Shia.
“This is Chief Huo, my friend. Chief, these two are my assistants, Lu Ban and Shia.”
He then introduced both parties to each other.
After the police took the crowd away, they flipped over the man who had passed out.
“I recognize this chap, he’s a mercenary living in this block. How did he come to attack you?”
Chief Huo glanced at the unconscious man.
“I’m curious myself.”
Cui Siter spread his hands.
“Shia, do you have any means to make him speak the truth, like a Truth Serum or something?”
Lu Ban quietly asked the mage girl.
“Unfortunately, magic isn’t so convenient. Magic related to the mental realm is generally forbidden.”
Shia answered, and before Lu Ban could lament further about the inconvenience of magic, she walked forward and picked up the unconscious man.
It was hard to describe how this girl, only shoulder-high to Lu Ban, managed to lift the man who was even taller than Lu Ban, but she did, just as effortlessly and unbelievably as stuffing an elephant into a fridge.
“However, we don’t need magic to make him tell the truth.”
Shia casually grabbed a cup of unfinished tea from a nearby table and splashed it on the man’s face, followed by a slap.
The smack of her metal-gloved hand on the man’s cheek caused his body to twitch, and he slowly started to wake up.
He looked somewhat bewilderedly at the girl who was shorter than him but was holding him up, muttering something under his breath.
“Why did you attack us?”
Shia asked sternly.
“…All will die, all will die, everyone shall embrace Him, the true terror is yet to come, offering, offering, I must make an offering, ah, the supreme and exalted One…”
The man had clearly sunk into madness, his words disjointed, speaking in incoherent sentences.
“Speak human.”
Shia raised her fist and punched him in the face, causing it to deform abruptly, as several teeth flew out of his mouth and blood dripped from the corner.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I just wanted to, wanted you to suffer less, to die quickly while you still can, or else, or else…”
The man became pained, pleading, yet his words were still illogical.
“Do you have any last words? Or do your family members need our help looking after? Mr. Chief, where do they live? Could you take us to see them later?”
Shia asked expressionlessly.
Finally, the man showed an expression of extreme fear, his voice hoarse, whimpering, and then he fumbled at his chest.
“Everything in the book is true, it’s true, I know it, I’ve told you, I’ve told you, don’t kill me, please don’t kill me…”
Without another word, Shia punched him again, knocking him out completely. She dropped the man and searched his chest pocket, soon finding a book.
“Looks like this is the main culprit… huh?”
Shia turned around to see several people, including the Chief, staring at her, seemingly hesitant to speak.
“Brother, what did you just say she does?”
Cui Siter was agape.
