Chapter 180: 179. The most precious thing at the end of the world_1 Chapter 180: 179. The most precious thing at the end of the world_1 Early morning.
Lu Ban saw the stars dim and the sky take on a golden hue, a transition from pitch black to golden yellow that surpassed any Earthly landscape and could truly be described as a magnificent view.
He decided to pretend that last night’s events had never happened.
Actually, Lu Ban wasn’t very keen on learning magic.
Because it was said that by remaining single until thirty, one could conjure fireballs, Lu Ban felt he still had a few years to go and there was no need to rush.
In the latter part of the night, Shia had been mostly studying with her Reading Magic, like a statue that moved occasionally.
Lu Ban thought that this spell was incredibly useful.
Shia could essentially let her consciousness sleep while allowing the books to learn on their own; in the end, she would have both acquired knowledge and rest.
This was something many could only dream of!
Meanwhile, Lu Ban also gleaned some details from what Shia had said.
For instance, the spells of the Night Country were essentially “knowledge” granted by the gods after prayers, just like when Lu Ban held the [Sword of Physics], his skill in using a crowbar was wrapped around his cerebral cortex like a spider web, ready to be pulled out at any time.
In the Foreign Domain of the Silent Lands, knowledge represents pollution.
Therefore, one can imagine that before the founder of Gray Tower had developed the Magic Network System, the mages of the Night Country probably possessed this knowledge themselves, or in other words, their minds were most likely polluted and became abnormal.
As for common people, it was even less likely for them to master magic.
Therefore, the founder who developed the Magical Network System and turned spells into divine gifts was indeed a very impressive move.
No wonder Shia held such great respect for that person.
From this perspective, the Night Country truly developed a way to exploit the knowledge of the Silent Lands without plunging the entire world into madness.
As for Dried Water Town… the taboo knowledge leaked out, and it’s likely that the Hai Family People mutated into mermen due to the pollution of knowledge by the Black Queen Mother, which is no wonder they have to hide.
But… if the Magic Network is about praying to the gods, then who are these gods of the Night Country who generously grant humans spells without overly influencing their will?
Lu Ban wasn’t quite clear on that.
Thinking about these things, he saw three natives wake up and start making breakfast over a campfire.
The breakfast was, of course, bugs.
“… I actually have some food here with better taste.”
He pointed to his backpack.
“Really?”
Flame Heart, tiny in stature but looking much better after a night’s rest, appeared to have the most serious crystal core disease – every time he used his abilities, he seemed very exhausted, which of course, also meant that his power was the strongest.
Lu Ban took out a few strips of compressed rations from his bag.
“This is… this is a treasure from the old era!”
Giant Arm recognized what Lu Ban was holding at first glance.
“Let me tell you, hey, I once came across a ruin, opened a warehouse that might have been sealed for hundreds of years, guess what I found?”
He didn’t wait for the others to answer and continued to speak on his own.
“It was alcohol!”
At the mention of this word, the other two, Flame Heart and Old Dream, showed longing looks.
“Although it lost its flavor, that was alcohol! A gift from a hundred years ago!”
Giant Arm seemed quite proud.
“Of course, there was also food in the warehouse. I couldn’t taste much, but at least it was better than eating bugs.”
He took a bite of the skewered bug meat.
Some of the bug meat had been sliced and air-dried last night, turning into tough jerky by morning, resembling emergency rations.
From his observations throughout the night, Lu Ban discovered that most of their food seemed to consist of bugs.
The insects in the desert hid under the sand, requiring certain techniques to lure them out, after which the trio killed them to obtain juicy and protein-rich bug meat.
Chicken-flavored, crunchy?
Having eaten bugs before, Lu Ban didn’t think so.
“You guys can eat it.”
Lu Ban tore open one of the packs, and as soon as he ripped the wrapping, the distinctive smell of oil and starch from the compressed rations filled the nostrils of the group.
“This, smells amazing!”
Giant Arm reached out, taking the compressed rations from Lu Ban.
“Can we really eat this?”
“Of course.”
Lu Ban finished distributing a pack of the compressed rations and watched them eat cautiously.
The expressions on all three faces turned blissful.
“The last time I tasted something like this was when I had just left home…”
“I shouldn’t eat this, how can I go back to munching on bugs after this!”
“Delicious.”
Old Dream, who was always reticent, even licked his palms after eating.
Lu Ban looked at them and suddenly felt rather contemplative.
In his world, at least food and drink were not a concern, but in the Wasteland of this post-apocalyptic world, even compressed rations had become a luxury.
The difference between the Foreign Domains was simply too great.
“Hmm? If I could go to the cities in the Wasteland, could I exchange these compressed rations for many precious things of this world?”
It reminded him of a trope from some novels and movies, where the protagonist shuttled between an ordinary city and the post-apocalyptic world, trading common food for all sorts of high-tech goods in the Wasteland.
“I have some energy bars here too, they taste quite good, you can keep them.”
He gave each person an energy bar, these made from nuts and chocolate were much tastier than the compressed rations.
“I’m definitely keeping this one.”
Giant Arm didn’t open his but instead tucked it deep into his backpack, much like a kindergarten kid who saves the tastiest snack for last.
“Doing that is generally called setting a FLAG, there’s a big chance it will lead to misfortune later on…”
Lu Ban inwardly ridiculed as he saw Flame Heart immediately tear open the energy bar and eat it quickly.
“This is too delicious!”
He licked the wrapper clean, not leaving a single residue behind.
It seemed that this man belonged to the live-for-the-moment type, who must enjoy life to the fullest whenever possible, eating all the good food at once.
After packing up their camp, they mounted their camels.
Although called camels, these creatures did not quite resemble the camels Lu Ban knew; they looked more like a cross between some kind of lizard and a camel, with slippery scales and distinctive humps.
“We must hurry to get there, hopefully without any competitors.”
Riding on the camel, Giant Arm pulled out a tattered piece of paper.
“Get to where?”
Lu Ban asked directly from behind.
“A ruin. I got this map from a team of Wasteland Hunters who were already wiped out. Clearly, they were on their way to that ruin, but unfortunately, they met with an accident. By the time I found them, they had already become mummies.”
Giant Arm said, without much emotion.
“Following the direction of the sun, we could see that ruin on the edge of the Wasteland by tomorrow at the earliest.”
