Chapter 169: 168. I think you can be my ……_1 Chapter 169: 168. I think you can be my ……_1 Outside Yannan Media University, a restaurant with a per capita consumption that is slightly higher than the average college student’s budget.
Lu Ban sat at a table by the window, waiting. He wasn’t paying attention to the TV in the restaurant that was broadcasting the news; instead, he looked outside, where he could see pedestrians coming and going downstairs, many of whom were young people, clearly students from Yannan Media University.
Yannan Media University is a nationally renowned institution in the film and media industry, with many TV hosts, actors, and directors among its alumni.
The opening ceremony and award event of this year’s Yannan University Student Film Festival were both to be held here, and Lu Ban naturally chose a hotel nearby — it was affordable and imbued with a youthful vibe.
More importantly, no one stuffed small paper notes through the door at night.
He took out his cell phone and checked the related news. “Cry” was already showing a trend of breaking into the mainstream, with various internet meme creators rushing to ride the wave of its popularity. It proved that once something caught fire to a certain extent, one needn’t worry about it; the traffic would automatically help fan the flames even higher.
It was just a shame that “Cry” was ultimately a horror movie, and many people have a natural aversion to horror films. Instead of going to cinemas to watch it, they couldn’t wait to block the keywords and never see them again.
Moreover, “Cry” had very little promotional effort before release; it relied mostly on Lu Ban’s existing fan base and word-of-mouth of those who had seen it. Also, it was only released in some cinemas in Yannan, so the box office didn’t explode.
Theoretically, these films would be pulled from cinemas after the film festival, but Lu Ban had already received invitations from the festival organizers and cinema chains to extend the screening duration of “Cry.”
After all, anyone with a clear sight could see that the film’s potential extended far beyond its current status. If it could be released nationwide and even exported overseas, the profits could be unimaginable.
However, Lu Ban wasn’t overly concerned about that. He was a contented person. Now that he had bought a house and didn’t need to pay rent, had money for food and drink, and a new computer set up, he had no extra expenditures.
Money had little significance for Lu Ban.
He was someone with aspirations.
While he was pondering over these matters, Lu Ban felt someone approaching.
He looked up and saw a girl.
This girl dressed in fashionable knitwear and a skirt, with little leather shoes. Her attire made her blend in with the university students outside. She wasn’t the kind of beauty that stunned at first sight, but upon closer appreciation, one could discern a distinct air and charm. Her slightly lightened short hair revealed petite ears, and she had a warm smile on her face, like a breath of spring.
She matched Lu Ban’s memory exactly.
“Have you been waiting long?”
Feng Yu sat down opposite Lu Ban, setting her shoulder bag to one side.
“Not really.”
Lu Ban’s eyes didn’t wander; instead, he passed the menu over.
“I ordered some stuff at random. See if there’s anything else you want.”
“Mm-hmm.”
Feng Yu nodded slightly and flipped through the menu.
“Wow, the dishes you ordered are a bit greasy, you know. That’s not great for cardiovascular health. Young people should eat less takeout and more vegetables and fruits…”
She then ordered some dishes beneficial for cardiovascular health. For some reason, Lu Ban always felt that the class president was acting a bit like his mother.
“By the way, I’ve seen it, your movie is really popular right now. Everyone on Weibo is discussing it, and some people are calling you a film genius.”
While waiting for the dishes to arrive, Feng Yu spoke teasingly.
“It’s alright, it’s alright. It might just be that the market is lacking this type of film,” Lu Ban replied earnestly, then after a pause, he asked, “What about you? Didn’t you say your crew also had a movie released?”
Upon hearing Lu Ban’s words, Feng Yu’s expression dimmed slightly.
“Ah, due to issues with the director and the production company, our movie’s release has been put on hold. I envy you, being able to make films freely.”
Her gaze shifted to the TV in the hall, which was showing the latest news. It all sounded like matters of great importance, but upon reflection, they also seemed distant.
“You should take care of yourself when you’re alone. I see you like to go to dangerous places for shooting. You must protect yourself. There was a star who died in an accident while filming a car racing scene. It’s such a pity.”
After chatting with Lu Ban for a while, Feng Yu lost her initial politeness and reverted to a motherly sort of nagging.
“There’s nothing to worry about; usually, you don’t die from it.”
Lu Ban gave a brief explanation.
“If I did die, then I suppose that would really be it.”
“Pfft—”
Feng Yu laughed.
“You’re making light of it again.”
“Sometimes making films means leading by example, just look at those lifetime achievement winners, some of them don’t even use stunt doubles,” Lu Ban said earnestly.
“You’re young now, your body can handle it, but when you end up with injuries and get old, you’ll regret it,” Feng Yu started nagging again.
“Feng Yu, there’s something I’ve been wanting to say since a while ago,” Lu Ban suddenly became serious, causing Feng Yu to stop her chanting and sit up straight.
“What, what is it?”
“I think you could be my mother,” Lu Ban voiced his thoughts.
“?”
Feng Yu instinctively leaned back, then asked.
“Are you saying I nag too much?”
“I’m saying you know how to take care of people.”
“Well, thank you very much for that.”
The server brought the dishes quickly, indeed, as Feng Yu had said, they were all dishes that looked very healthy, aimed at protecting cardiovascular health.
But they tasted quite good.
As they ate, something seemed to happen in the news on TV.
Lu Ban looked over.
The TV was showing a cruise ship engulfed in flames amid a storm.
“…According to reports just received by this station, the cruise ship ‘Star Cluster’ has suffered a serious fire at the port near Pohnpei Island in the South Pacific, and rescue operations are currently underway. The severe storm has delayed the rescue efforts, and the extent of casualties is still unknown…”
Lu Ban remembered that this was the cruise ship that couldn’t return because of a storm in the Pacific Ocean; it seemed he also saw some strange island.
Could this be the disaster that was summoned?
He felt that things were not that simple.
Feng Yu, on the other hand, didn’t pay attention to these matters, enjoying her meal happily.
“A cruise ship, huh? I’d really like to take a cruise someday, oh, but not one that’s on fire,” she commented.
Eating and chatting, the two talked about everything from films to daily life, from college courses to hot topics on Weibo, just like very familiar friends.
After eating, Lu Ban picked up the bill, ready to pay.
“Let’s go Dutch, it’d be embarrassing for you to treat,” Feng Yu took out her phone.
After paying, the two left the restaurant. The afternoon sun shone on the street, the plane trees at the roadside were a resplendent golden yellow, their leaves falling down in abundance, with men and women taking photos, a leisurely college life that made one feel a lot younger.
“I should head back now,” Feng Yu said to Lu Ban as they walked along the road after a while, checking the time.
“Alright, I won’t see you off then,” Lu Ban waved his hand, bidding farewell to Feng Yu.
At last, he suddenly remembered something and asked.
“Oh, right, there’s one more thing,”
“What is it?”
Hearing Lu Ban’s words, Feng Yu stopped walking, turned her head slightly, and a gust of wind blew up, scattering the golden leaves, shimmering in the sunlight.
“You’re not Feng Yu, who are you really?”
Lu Ban raised his doubt.
